Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Stephen Phillips was a successful English poet - dramatist who saw good success in his day. Concentrating on classic themes from mythology and the great stories of past literature (such as from Dante), his dramas are dignified and elegant. Phillips made some strong efforts to revitalize Elizabethan style with an infusion of classic Greek dramatic elements. "Ulysses" seems to be one such production. It's a good play, and all of the characteristics and problems inherent in the character of Ulysses are present. The drama was originally published in 1902. This is the 8th printing, issued in 1911. The book has an inked gift inscription (in two handsome hands - see picture provided) : Ida L. Butcher To Anna M. Beechwood. -- Anna M. Beechwood (1892 - 1972) was wife of George Beechwood, and the daughter of Charles M. Butcher and Sarah Jane Butcher (nee Morgan). Ida Butcher was Anna's aunt. TITLE : Ulysses. He dedicated his life wholeheartedly to a number of causes: Jewish emancipation, women's suffrage, and social assimilation being among the most prominent. His famous novel, "Children of the Ghetto" was hugely influential, and his play, "The Melting Pot" popularized that very phrase. This play is still being performed and is a powerful statement of the need and desire of immigrants to be assimilated into their new national environment. Zangwill wrote a large number of books, most of them well-received by critics and public alike. The play here offered, "The Cockpit" is one of Zangwill's anti-war productions. It can be imagined that a world that had just suffered through the insanity of World War I would welcome any such effort on behalf of continuing peace. Many knew him only as a poet; and indeed he was - a great one, and he was appointed as Poet Laureate for England, in which post he served longer than all but one other Poet Laureate : Tennyson. Masefield's production was creatively prolific. He produced, not only poetry, but essays, plays and novels for both adults and children. His writing is particularly rich, his poems memorable , and his prose sonorous. "King Cole" is a dramatic poem - a play in verse form. This excellent and engaging drama tells a story about a circus troupe struggling in the English countryside, based around the ancient legend of Good King Cole; and of how the folk in the story meet and are affected by King Cole. It seems, at least to me, that King Cole shares attributes of both The Green Man and Pan. "Old King Cole was a merry old soul - and a merry old soul was he -" The book is illustrated with the lovely art of Masefield's daughter, Judith Masefield. It was a companion to his previous novel, "Mitch Miller". Together they provide a look at the society of mid-western, middle class society, and, at the same time, illuminate some areas of Master's life. This sort of truthfulness in a fictional work was to cause a bit of embarrassment, if not trouble for the author. Edgar Lee Masters was, of course, the author of the renowned "Spoon River Anthology" This is the First Edition. Note that the publisher used Master's dedication (To Elmer Chubb), which dedication was meant by Masters as a joke between him and the publisher. Macmillan took it literally. But Elmer Chubb was a fiction - a joke - he did not exist; and so the book was dedicated to a fictional non-entity.
