The decidedly narrative approach of the museum's new installation project suggested the need to 'narrate' the churches to which the works in the museum refer, and thus to consider the entire monumental complex of Piazza del Duomo an enormous museum, providing visitors with interpretative instruments that can offer insight into its main contents and stvlistic elements. This approach should not be misunderstood, however. Churches are never museums, even if they welcome scholars and tourists who come to see the artwork they contain. Every church is a house of God" (this is exactly what the term duomo means: domus. 'house'. 'house of God`). Consequently, those who want to explain a church must above all convev its sacred character, as this normally proves to be the surest key to its art and historical interpretation.

La pandemia da SARS-CoV-2 ha inevitabilmente frenato le celebrazioni, ma non ha impe…dito di tradurre online il confronto tra due capolavori dipinti a centinaia di anni e a decine di migliaia di chilometri di distanza, nell'ambito di due culture che avevano pochi contatti: lo Sposalizio della Vergine di Raffaello (1504) e la Festa di Qingming lungo il fiume di Zhang Zeduan (ante 1186), un'opera che in Cina ha uno status simile alla Gioconda in Occidente. Questo dialogo invita lo spettatore a confrontare diversi modi di rappresentare il tempo e lo spazio: nella pittura occidentale la prospettiva ha reso il dipinto una rappresentazione vista come da un particolare punto nel tempo e da un particolare punto nello spazio, anche quando entrambi erano immaginati o addirittura fittizi (J. Bradburne); nella pittura cinese, l'utilizzo di rotoli lunghi molti metri ha privilegiato l'utilizzo di una proiezione assonometrica che permette allo spettatore di seguire la sequenza delle scene che si svolgono lungo i dipinti. I saggi affrontano l'argomento da varie angolazioni, focalizzando le peculiarità dell'arte cinese che caratterizzano il dipinto di Zhang Zeduan (i saggi Cheng-hua Wang e Sabrina Rastelli), approfondendo le conoscenze prospettiche che sono alla base dei due dipinti (Martin Kemp), la storia dello Sposalizio di Raffaello (Emanuela Daffra) e la tecnica del pittore, indagata durante il restauro del dipinto nel 2009 (l'intervento di Paola Borghese, Andrea Carini e Sara Scatragli).
