Its new owners attributed it to Giuseppe Piamontini (16631744) 'because of its manufacture and its extremely close proximity to the Doccia model', the model employed for a porcelain Laocooen produced in the factory set up…by Carlo Ginori (170257) in 1737 at Doccia near Florence. Labelled as French and belatedly returned to Late Baroque Florence (but to the wrong artist), this magnificent group has finally revealed its identity. It is one of the incunabula of an ambitious young sculptor measuring himself with the sculptors of Ancient Greece and their great Renaissance followers of his native Florence. During the day he copied them in the Galleria degli Uffizi and in the streets of the city. At night he gathered together with other pupils of Foggini in the Borgo Pinti studio to study together. The prominent career to which Della Valle obviously aspired prompted his move to Rome. Della Valle helped us interpret the bronze correctly, interpret correctly its attribution in the Doccia models' inventory and by extension understand better that document itself. But most important, our understanding of Florentine Late Baroque sculpture and of Della Valle's art has acquired another firm point of reference. AUTHOR: Dimitrios Zikos is an independent art historian specialised in Florentine bronze sculpture of the Renaissance and the Baroque. He studied Art History and Archaeology in the Universities of Munich and Freiburg i. Br. from where he obtained his PhD. He was a Henkell Fellow at the Kunsthistorisches Institut, Florence, and has co-curated exhibitions at the Gardner (2003), the Bargello (2003-2014), the Liechtenstein Princely Collections (2005), the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (2015), and the Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze (2023). The maps are so named because from the end of the 18th…century until their transfer to the Laurentian Library in 1921 they decorated the rooms of the Medicean villa of Castello outside Florence. From 1667 to 1669, the young Grand Duke Cosimo III conducted his grand tour, which took him to various countries in Europe. While in the Low Countries on his first journey he purchased 65 maps and hand-drawn views of cities; on his second, longer trip he arrived in Lisbon, where he bought copies of maritime maps. The collection of maps and colonial vistas from Holland, Portugal and Spain provide us with insight into the shape of the world in the mid-17th century as well as information about the circulation of people and ideas. The catalogue describes and accurately analyses each map while providing details on the places shown and the contents of the legends and captions, when these are present. The essays discuss the history of the maps, from the time of their purchase by the grand duke to their arrival at the Laurentian Library. SELLING POINTS: . From the beginning of his career, Giorgio de Chirico decided that his painting should "show what cannot be seen", because there was no point in depicting the things that were already visible in nature. Magritte, in fact, when he first encountered the painting of De Chirico in 1925, said it gave him… the sensation of being able "to see thought". Famous artists and poets such as Guillaume Apollinaire and Andre Breton immediately recognised their own aesthetics in his estranged and enigmatic vision of the world and his extraordinarily lucid and penetrating representation of things. This opened the way to all the movements that made European art so vital between World War I and World War II: Dada, Surrealism, Magic Realism and Neoromanticism. This book includes some of the best known De Chirico paintings from his Metaphysical period (L enigme de l arrivee et de l apres-midi, La nostalgie de l infini and La serenite du savant, among others), Metaphysical paintings by Carra (Il gentiluomo briaco, L ovale delle apparizioni), still lifes by Morandi, masterpieces by Rene Magritte (La condition humaine, Le sens de la nuit and La clef des songes, among others), Max Ernst (Oedipus Rex and Vision provoquee par l aspect nocturne de la porte Saint-Denis) and Balthus (from Le passage du Commerce-Saint-Andre to Le cafe de l Odeon) accompanied, in a sort of dialogue, by extremely significant works by Niklaus Stoecklin, Arturo Nathan, Pierre Roy and Alberto Savinio. A special section is dedicated to drawings by De Chirico and Max Ernst. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

She presented at the 59th Venice Biennale, Angels Listening, an interactive exhibition featuring seven large-scale bronze angels staged around a silver confessio…nal box, each figure rendered in silence with its mouth taped shut. Viewers were invited to participate by relinquishing their innermost thoughts, whether repressed due to fear of judgement or sheer inability, by writing them onto pieces of ribbon, placing these ribbons into The Cathartic Box, and ringing the awakening bell, a symbol of the role of the angels as mute listeners. At the end of each day all of the new messages were compiled onto prayer-like mats and dispersed throughout the exterior gardens for future visitors to encounter and share as a collective stream-of-consciousness. This book shares those messages. In listening to these stories, perhaps it is people who become the angels listening. AUTHOR: Rachel Lee Hovnanian was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia and raised in Houston, Texas. She received her BFA from the University of Texas, Austin, and completed post graduate studies at the Parsons School of Design in New York. She lives and works between Miami, New York and Tuscany. Over the last decade Hovnanian's work has been exhibited at public and private institutions across the globe, including numerous solo presentations in the United States, Asia, Europe, and the middle east.
