Henry Cockton (1807-1853) was a…n English novelist, remembered primarily for The Life and Adventures of Valentine Vox, the Ventriloquist. His comic tale Sylvester Sound the Somnambulist, about a persistent sleepwalker who unknowingly performs many exploits, also enjoyed some success. It sold over 40,000 copies, and remained in print until 1921. Its preface explores sleepwalking. In a half calf binding. Externally smart, with some fading to the spine, rubbing to the extremities and bumping to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with the odd spot throughout. Boards holding but shaken front end paper not marked but loose. Rear paper missing. Title has engraving of William the 4th opposite. 948 pages with around 150 engravings. Thin paper…is toned some spotting but not foxed. Several pages towards the rear are loose and chipped up but all there. A scarce item on the order of a pulp novel.
