Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. "The Court Painters of France", a monograph by William A. Coffin, an author and artist, was published in 1914 by The Mentor Department of Fine Arts as Serial No. 57. This essay was then bound in a large collection of disparate articles similar to a Sammelband (a collection of articles on various,…non-related subjects). The essay, a stand-alone monograph, was cleanly disbound. It is illustrated with 17 black-and-white illustrations, as well as 6 sepia gravures; the article is not a definitive monograph, because of its brevity, but it touches on six important European painters that are, today, avidly collected. The tone is genial and the essay is informative. There are 17 monochrome pictures through the text and six full page sepia gravures. The pictures through the text are discussed, and each plate illustration is given a full page explanation. The six full sized sepia gravures are as follows : "Parnassus" by Claude Lorrain; "The French Comedy" by Antoine Watteau; "The Shepherds of Arcadia" by Nicolas Poussin; "Portrait of Louis XIV" by Hyacinthe Rigaud; "Portrait of Marie Leczinska" by Charles A. Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. This copy of "The Story of the French Revolution" by Albert Bushnell Hart (Professor of Government, Harvard University) is a complete 1914 stand-alone article disbound from a larger collection of disparate subject matters. It was published by the Mentor Association Department of History as "The "M…entor", Volume 2, No. 18, Serial No. 70. This disbound monograph consists of 24 pages, including those that make up the sepia gravures (with text on the reverse sides); it has 11 black-and-white pictures through the text. Included with the monograph is a brief list for further reading. At the end of the article are 6 handsome sepia gravure plates printed on a stiff card stock. There are explanatory texts for each picture. Through the text, monochrome illustrations present other well-known events and personages of the French Revolution. The six gravures depict Louis XVI, Portrait by A. F. Callet; Marie Antionette and her children, Painting by Vigée LeBrun; The Oath of the Jeu De Paume, painting by J. L. David; Robespierre, by Vigneron after the portrait by Danloux; Rouget DeLisle singing the Marseillaise for the first time, Painting by I. A. A. Pils; Charlotte Corday in prison, painting by Charles Louis Muller. The article, which is quite interesting, starts with the following : " People love to date events from some great catastrophe (ie: 'Not long after the Jonestown Flood', 'Just after the San Francisco Earthquake', etc.) In like manner mankind notes a succession of great events which are milestones in history, - ('The Fall of the Roman Empire', 'The Norman Conquest of England', 'The discovery of America', etc.) Of all these startling events none is more deeply impressed upon European and American nations than the French Revolution. It burst forth like an exploding gas well; it shook to pieces one of the proudest kingdoms on Earth; it set up the first large European republic since the time of Rome; it penetrated and terrified all Europe. Never from that time to this has the politics, history, or government of the world gone back to its old course." I must add that the above was written in 1914, and the author could have had no awareness of the explosive and dire events yet to come in the Twentieth Century. SERIES : Mentor Magazine Department of History, Vol. 2, No. 18, Serial No. 70 TITLE : The Story of the French Revolution AUTHOR : Albert Bushnell Hart (1854 - 1943) IMPRINT : Mentor Association PLACE : No place given [but New York] DATE : (1914) EDITION : Not stated STATUS : Out of Print OP DETAILS : Contains 11 monochrome illustrations interspersed through the article; a brief list of supplementary reading is supplied; contains 6 sepia gravure plates (printed on thicker card stock), with accompanying explanatory text; 24 pages; 6 3/4" x 9 1/4"; complete, disbound, stand-alone monograph. Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. "American Mural Painters " by Arthur Hoeber, was published in 1914 by The Mentor Department of Fine Arts as Serial No. 67. This essay was then bound in a large collection of disparate articles similar to a Sammelband. The essay, a stand-alone piece, illustrated with sepia toned pictures, was disbo…und and the spine covered. It is not a definitive article, because of its brevity, but it touches on a considerable number of important artists that had been working in the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century. The tone is genial and the essay is informative. There are fourteen monochrome pictures through the text and six full page, loose illustrations done in sepia. The pictures through the text are discussed, and each plate illustration is given a full page explanation (this done on the reverse of each specific picture - so that when viewed , the text opposite is for the preceding picture - lest one be confused when viewing the pictures provided above - the essay, when originally issued, was presented with text and pictures lying loose within a wrap. The monograph was issued with the sepia gravures sitting loose (unbound). The pictures through the text are interesting, representing some of the finest mural work that had been done. One that stands out is a work consisting of three Panels by Maxfield Parrish, depicting a Florentine Fête. Hoeber, himself, was a highly accomplished artist, specializing in landscapes. The six full sized sepia 'gravure' pictures are as follows : ** Return of the Battle Flags - by Edward Simmons ** The Apotheosis of Pennsylvania by E. A. Abbey ** The Beneficence of the Law - by Kenyon Cox ** Hosea - Detail - by John Sargent ** Detail of the Anthony Drexel Memorial Chancel by E. H. Soft cover. Zustand: Good. This is a lovely issue of the "The Mentor" monographic series, June 15, 1916 Volume 4, Number 9 - Serial No. 109 : Historic Gardens of New England by Mary Harrod Northend. The Issue created by the Mentor Department of Natural History and published by The Mentor Association. "The Mentor" was a periodica…l full of interesting and informative articles and packed with lovely soft sepia and monochrome reproductions of photographs and art. Part of the Mentor system was the issuance of serial monographs, such as the one issued here, which issues were devoted to a single subject. The text in these issues, while factual, were written on a popular level and did not make pretense towards scholarship and thus were livelier than similar information one might find in academic publications. From month to month one never know what sort of subject matter might be covered. This issue features a delightful discourse on Historic Gardens of New England by Mary H. Northend. Accompanying the text are many photographs and six separate portfolio plates with halftone sepia photographs of famous gardens. Many gardens are mentioned, but the following are given special attention and have accompanying portfolio sepia gravure plates. Each sepia plate has a legend printed on the verso telling about the garden : ** Longfellow's Garden ** The Hoffman Garden ** The Peabody Garden ** The Moulton Garden ** The Derby Garden ** The Wendell Garden SERIES : Mentor Monographic Serials ( NO. 109) AEGIS : Mentor Department of Natural History ISSUE : Volume 4, Number 9 TITLE : Historic Gardens of New England AUTHOR : Mary H. Northend (Mary Harrod Northend, 1850 - 1926) IMPRINT : Mentor Association PLACE : 52, East Nineteenth St., New York DATE : June 15, 1916 STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : Serial Monograph; contains 6 loose halftone gravure plates in sepia; numerous halftone photo-illustrations through the text; 12 pages; approx. 7 1/8" x 10" , decorated stiff wraps, printed in black and light blue against gray, stapled (2 staples)- no advertising. CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book, which remains clean and attractive, with the following imperfections and particulars noted : EXTERIOR : The most obvious imperfection is the small loss to the bottom fore-edge corner tip on the rear cover; the spine fold displays moderate abrasion, and there is some mild weathering along its length; there are various minute dents and nicks along the cover edges; soft bumps to corner tips; cover details are bright, and the whole displays nicely. BINDING : There is evidence that some mending was neatly effected to the cover attachment, else the whole seems solid and tight , with no detached or loose leaves. INTERIOR : Clean and unmarked throughout. No writing or signatures. The six sepia plates have softly bumped corner tips, else are clean and attractive. This is the original publication, not a modern reproduction. Sepia plate halftone photographs (illustrator).

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. "Gothic Architecture", a monograph by Clarence Ward, was published in 1914 by The Mentor Department of Fine Arts as Serial No. 64. This essay was then bound in a large collection of disparate articles similar to a Sammelband (a collection of articles on disparate subjects). The essay, a stand-alon…e monograph, was cleanly disbound. It is illustrated with 22 black-and-white illustrations, as well as 6 sepia gravures; the article is not a definitive monograph, because of its brevity, but it touches on six important European Cathedrals that are key to understanding such splendid architectural wonders. The tone is genial and the essay is informative. There are 22 monochrome pictures through the text and six full page sepia gravures. The pictures through the text are discussed, and each plate illustration is given a full page explanation. The six full sized sepia gravures are as follows : The Cathedrals of Cologne, Chartres, Rheims, Bourges, Gloucester, Lincoln.
