Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In a life stranger than any fiction, Grace OMalley, daughter of a clan chief in County Mayo, went from marriage at fifteen to piracy on the high seas. She had a fleet of galleys under her command (four of them Scots). In 1559 her husband was killed in an ambush and not long after she took as a lover a survivor of a shipwreck. Clansmen came over from Scotland and murdered him. She tracked them down and had them killed, and from then on there follow episodes of plunder, kidnapping, piracy and general mayhem. In 1586 she was captured by the Earl of Ormond and was actually on the scaffold with a rope around her neck when she was saved on the orders of Queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth offered to make her a countess. Grace refused, but was officially allowed to be a privateer thereafter. She may also have been an intelligencer for Elizabeth's spymaster, Walsingham, thus able to warn the Queen of the Essex plot. Elizabeth died in 1603, by which time Grace had entered a nunnery. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. On 28 November 2010, the Irish government infamously agreed to a bailout from the Troika to save Ireland's failing economy. This decision had huge and long-lasting social implications for Ireland and her people, and led to the annihilation of Fianna Fail and its allies in the 2011 general election. In 'Hell at the Gates', Brian Cowen, the late Brian Lenihan, Eamon Ryan, Micheal Martin, Mary Harney and many others, recount for the first time in their own words the inside story behind the actions of the most hated government in living memory. The result is a deeply honest, intensely personal and revelation-strewn account of their experiences in the white heat of an economic meltdown. It reveals the extent to which Cowen and Lenihan's relationship disintegrated, how members of the government were physically attacked by the public and also gives the definitive account by Micheal Martin himself of why he chose in early 2011 to move against his embattled leader. As Mary O'Rourke said of those days, 'There was drama, tragedy, pathos, comedy, farce, love and death. It was like a Shakespearean drama.' John Lee and Daniel McConnell have interviewed the people who were at the coalface of this drama, to produce a gripping account of those fateful days in and around Leinster House. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The book is divided into 3 sections: Maura's Boy describes the first ten years of the life of Christy Kenneally, a working-class Cork north-sider who lost his mother when he was five years old. The book is as much about the place as the narrator, and beautifully conveys the sense of a lost golden age. Kenneally's new material tells the story of life after coming to grips with the death of his mother. The New Curate picks up the narrative when Kenneally is twenty-four and is appointed chaplain to 'The Incurable', St Patrick's Hospital on Wellington Road. The account of his three years there with terminal cancer patients and his other job as spiritual director for five Cork secondary schools makes an unforgettable story which combines laughter and sorrow - and an occasional miracle.
