Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. 12mo., xviii, [ii], 216 pages, some light vert occasional spotting, original half calf over marbled boards, spine ruled in gilt. A VG tightly bound copy slightly rubbed on some extremities. The work covers a wide variety of ailments with suggested treatments - Fevers, Pleurisy…, Madness, Small-Pox, Haemoptoe, Nephritis, Ulcers in the Kidnies, Disorders of the Eyes, The Bastard Peripneumony, or Humoral Asthma, Epilepsy, Flatus, Apoplexy, Venereal Diseases, Diarrhoea, Dysentry, Cholera, Piles, Diabetes, Worms, Scurvy, Importence, Gout, etc. Thomas Marryat M.D. (1730 1792) was an English physician, known also as a medical writer and wit. After a peripatetic life Marryat finally settled in Bristol 1785, where he initially made a good living but died poor in 1792. His reputation as a successful healer survived, and led to this, probably the best, edition of his most popular book. Therapeutics was initially published in Latin in 1758 and translated soon after. Many editions were published in the author's lifetime, some known only in single copies.

8vo, pp. [iv], 2498, [1] blank, [1] advertisement; top edge gilt, otherwise untrimmed in later half calf, spine with morocco label. Sole edition. This book, on Milton's supposed debt to Joshua Sylvester's translation of Salluste du Bartas, is by the Rev. Charles Dunster (1750-1816), who was rector of Petworth, Sussex, and thus a… protégé of Lord Egremont. Milton seems to have been something of an obsession for Dunster: apart from publishing his own edition of Paradise Regained the same year (issued by the same group of booksellers), he also published a poetical satire titled St James's Street (1790) under the pseudonym 'Marmaduke Milton'. Provenance. This is a presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the endpaper 'To Dr Vaughan, with Mr Dunster's Compts.' This is likely to be in the hand of a publisher's clerk. A note in ink at the foot of p. 229, on the folio editions of Spenser of 1609 and 1612, is probably by the recipient.

Small 8vo in fours. 72pp, text tables. Later maroon cloth with recent matching spine and printed label, binder's ticket of C. COOPER & CO. to front paste-down. Formerly in the Birmingham Medical Institute Library. Few marks to cloth. This copy from the Birmingham Medical Institute Library dispersal in 2012. 'A brief account of t…he qualities of the newly-discovered mineral water at Middle-Hill, near Box, in Wiltshire' (DISCOVER) - on examination of the text the above is rather wide of the mark. Falconer gives a history of the plague, citing many former writers: Sydenham, Hodges, Cullen, Morton and Russel; this is followed by measures to be taken, should the 'scourge' reach our shores.
