In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book illuminates some of the challenges feminist German filmmakers face and offers original insights into their filmmaking practices. It considers the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, class, and sexuality as these are cinematically represented, and discusses narrative, documentary, 'art', and essay films from both West and East Germany before and after unification. Several essays treat films by well-known filmmakers, including R.W. Fassbinder, Jutta Bruckner, Ulrike Ottinger, Helke Sander, Helma Sanders-Brahms, Monika Treut, and Wim Wenders in ways that challenge the limits of major critical approaches in feminist film criticism today. Importantly, Triangulated Visions also offers suggestive and original analyses of works by filmmakers who, until now, have not received much scholarly treatment.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Why do some conflicts escalate into violence while others dissipate harmlessly Under what circumstances will people kill, and why While homicide has been viewed largely in the pathological terms of 'crime' and 'deviance,' violence, Mark Cooney contends, is a naturally-occurring form of conflict found throughout history and across cultures under certain social conditions. Cooney has analyzed the social control of homicide within and across over 30 societies and interviewed several dozens of prisoners incarcerated for murder or manslaughter, as well as members of their families. Violence such as homicide can only be understood, he argues, by transcending the traditional focus on the social characteristics of the killer and victims, and by looking at the role played by family members, friends, neighbors, onlookers, police officers, and judges. These third parties can be a source of peace or violence, depending on how they are configured in particular cases. Violence flourishes, Cooney demonstrates, when authority is either very strong or very weak and when third-party ties are strong and boundaries between groups sharply defined.Drawing on recent theory in the lively new sociological speciality of conflict management, Mark Cooney has culled a vast array of evidence from modern and preindustrial societies to provide us with the first general sociological analysis of human violence.

The articles, written with a minimum of technical language, engage current social problems directly, demonstrating the possibility of diverse applications of Kant's views.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - What role did manhood play in early American politics Political scientist Mark Kann suggests that America's founders committed themselves in theory to the premise that all men are created equal, but they did not believe that all men could be trusted with equality. A REPUBLIC OF MEN compellingly analyzes the ways in which our founders used a rhetoric of manhood to maintain public order.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In Freud's Paranoid Quest John Farrell analyzes the personality and thought of Sigmund Freud in order to give insight into modernity's paranoid character and into the true nature of Freudian psychoanalysis. Farrell's Freud is not the path-breaking psychologist he claimed to be, but the fashioner and prisoner of a total system of suspicion. The most gifted of paranoids, he deployed this system as a self-heroizing myth and a compelling historical ideology. Strangest of all, Freud's science borrows the rhetoric of the satiric romance adapted from his great model, Don Quixote. Freud asks all of us to share in the suspicion, victimization, and even the charm of the paranoid romance, to follow the heroic psychoanalyst on his quest in the quixotic territory of the unconscious mind.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A developmental analysis of adolescents growing up in an inner-city, working class lifeWhat does it mean to be a teenager in an American city at the close of the twentieth century How do urban surroundings affect the ways in which teens grow up, and what do their stories tell us about human development In particular, how do the negative images of themselves on television and in the newspaper affect their perspectives about themselves Psychologists typically have shown little interest in urban youth, preferring instead to generalize about adolescent development from studies of their middle-class, suburban counterparts. In Everyday Courage Niobe Way, a developmental psychologist, looks beyond the stereotypes to reveal how the personal worldviews of inner-city poor and working-class adolescents develop over time. In the process, she challenges much conventional wisdom about inner-city youth and about adolescents more generally. She introduces us to Malcolm, a sensitive and proud young man full of contradictions. We follow him as he makes the honor roll, becomes a teenage father, and falls into depression as his younger sister is dying of cancer. We meet Eva, an intelligent and confident young women full of questions, who grows increasingly alienated from her mother and comes to rely on her best friends for support. We watch her blossom as a ball player and a poet. We share her triumph when she receives a scholarship to the college of her choice. In these 24 adolescents, Way finds a cross-section of youngsters who want to make positive changes in their lives and communities while struggling with concerns about betrayal, trust, racism, violence, and death. Each adolescent wants most of all to 'be somebody,' to have her or his voice heard.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Set among the spinning cogs and wheels of a lavish dinner club for the 'gastronomical Elect', The Ruins is a black-eyed, Machiavellian fairy tale. Like all fairy tales, it turns on subjection -- the increasingly comic and catastrophic subjection of 'ou hero, Tom', a high-minded and half-starved shoeshine boy. Tom shifts for himself in a dank and vaguely apocalyptic city where 'the days come and go in a flat, lurid tide, noon and midnight like sullen twins, so indifferently does light distinguish itself from darkness'.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The past decade has seen an extraordinary outpouring of research, writing, and talk about lesbian and gay sexuality, triggered in part by the confluence of the AIDS epidemic, the feminist sex wars, and the development of queer studies. Yet many lesbian and gay writers and readers have been frustrated by recurring gaps and absences in the queer studies approach to sexuality, as well as by the limitations of explicit queer community discourse around sex.Opposite Sex brings the sex back into queer studies, making real bodies, acts, and desires central to analysis of the complex relationships between male and female homosexualities, and their impact on lesbian and gay culture. The contributors to this volume--scholars, artists, activists, and journalists--redress the remarkable dearth of thoughtful discourse about the many ways in which lesbian and gay men are implicated--and viewed within--in each other's sexual realities.Opposite Sex includes writing by lesbians and gay men about each other's bodies, interpretations of different male and female homosexual sex cultures, and reflections on the history, sociology, and politics of changing discourses around queer sexuality. Passionate and challenging, this anthology shows the rich and complex forms through which individuals and communities make meaning from their quotidian sexual impulses, their utopian sexual mores, and their idiosyncratic sexual acts. The contributors include Roberto Bedoya, Kaucylia Brooke, Lawrence Chua, Linnea Due, Sandra Lee Golvin, Jewelle Gomez, Francisco J. Gonzalez, Della Grace, Amber Hollibaugh, Robert Jensen, Kate Kane, Elizabeth A. Kelly, Monica Majoli, Mimi McGurl, Robert Reid-Pharr, Gayle Rubin, Lawrence Schimel, Richard Schimpf, and Susan Stryker.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Can individuals believe that they are acting with integrity, yet in disobedience to the dictates of their conscience Can they retain fidelity to their conscience while ignoring a sense of what integrity requires Integrity and conscience are often thought to be closely related, perhaps even different aspects of a single impulse. This timely book supports a different and more complicated view. Acting with integrity and obeying one's conscience might be mutually reinforcing in some settings, but in others they can live in varying degrees of mutual tension. Bringing together prominent scholars of legal theory and political philosophy, the volume addresses both classic ruminations on integrity and conscience by Plato, Hume, and Kant as well as more contemporary examinations of professional ethics and the complex relations among politics, law and personal morality.
