No Reply Press (illustrator). small 8vo. Bound by hand in handmade paste papers wrappers. 31, (1) pages. Limited to 326 copies, of which this is one of 300 numbered copies signed by the printer, Griffin Gonzales, Ruta Kuzmickas, and the printer (Jenn Laurence). A fine copy. Printed by hand on Crane Lettra paper, using a Vandercook Universal I cylinder press at Letterpress PDX in Portland, Oregon. From the artists' website: No Reply Press is excited to announce Per Se Phone, an illustrated collection of poems by Ruta Kuzmickas. This first edition features eleven poems and five pen-and-ink illustrations which lend themselves beautifully to letterpress. Rutas poetry is electric. It eschews clunky and clichéd phrasing for a lyrical sensibility, without ever resting into simple or tired rhyme structures. While thoroughly original, there are flashes (and collectors of No Reply will recognize this to be a supreme compliment) of T. S. Eliot. One such moment: this is a place where I cannot be reached. this is a place where evening descends like sheets of tracing paper, details buried underneath, blurred by frosted sleep. The poetry is intricately woven, and without fat. Language reduced to its core elements. They are the literary analogue to the pen-and-ink illustrations which accompany them. These are explained by Kuzmickas: "As a self-taught visual artist, the simmering point in terms of developing a visual language came when I first gave up on the idea of drawing something accurately, allowing my hand to flow in a more natural, unpredictable rhythm. I had fallen in love with the topography of Rodin sculpture, and so I made ink recreations as a challenge to myself: can I make a topographical map of a sculpture with black ink? A photograph? I then took to drawing as though I were sculpting wire or thread, tangling everything together but seeking clarity amid the knots. This led me to making faces out of single pieces of wire in order to feel what the pen was feeling, as many of my drawings tend to be layered masses of bent, unbroken lines. I obsessively draw faces and figures, and have only recently begun to incorporate watercolor, and bright red circular hearts." Artist's Notes: Ruta Kuzmickas is a visual artist, pianist, poet, photographer, and interdisciplinary collaborator. Although she has played the piano since age six and has earned two degrees in piano performance from Rice University, her heart lies in crossovers of images, words, movement, and music. She frequently collaborates with composers, musicians, and artists. Her first book of poetry, Flash Flood Fiction, was published in 2020. Ruta lives in Portland, Oregon. Bound by hand in handmade paste papers wrappers.

Wrappers. Zustand: NEW. Elizabeth Catlett (illustrator). Edition limited to 400. No Reply Press, 2023 BY TONI MORRISON, WITH WOODBLOCKS BY ELIZABETH CATLETT At the pinnacle of world literature, in her lecture upon receiving the Nobel Prize, Toni Morrison used her platform to urge care with words. "Language," she said, "is susceptible to death, erasure; certainly imperiled and salvageable only by an effort of the will." Language is not fixed, but precious and delicate like a bird in your hands. With its elegiac prose and interweaving of narrative and polemic, Morrison's meditation is worth continual close reading. To celebrate its thirtieth anniversary, and with special permission from the Nobel Prize Committee, we have printed her lecture alongside the gripping woodblocks of Elizabeth Catlett. The edition is limited to 400 copies, numbered 1 through 400. The twenty-third imprint of No Reply Press, 2023. Typeset in 11-point Centuar. 20 pages, Measuring 6 by 9 inches. Chapbook in wrappers. Zustand: NEW. Edition limited to 150. No Reply Press, The Story of an Hour, 2024 BY KATE CHOPIN An early exemplar of feminist literature, The Story of an Hour follows Mrs. Mallard as she learns of her husband's death in a freak accident. Grief quickly turns to a guilty exhilaration as she realizes that - her duties as a wife having been fulfilled and finished - the remainder of her days will be hers, and hers alone. Secluded in her room she whispers to herself, "Free, free, free!" Alas - tragedy (or triumph?) only turns to further tragedy. Kate Chopin was a maestro of short fiction. Her writing, though now well over a century old, is bitingly relevant today. This is the first in what will become a series of unnumbered chapbooks. While the Press' capacity for grander editions has expanded, our love of smaller format bookmaking remains steadfast. Some great literature simply confines itself to a few hundred words. That, in our view, should not be grounds for exclusion from private presswork. The edition is limited to 150 unnumbered copies. Typeset in 11-point Weiss. Measuring 5 by 7 inches. Printed by hand on Hahnemühle Biblio using a Vandercook Universal I. Sewn into hand-painted wrappers, made specially for the edition.

Hardcover. Zustand: like new. Valeria Zecchini (illustrator). by Leo Tolstoy, illustrated and translation by Valeria Zecchini Chance, chance, nothing but chance. Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, titan of nineteenth century literature, gave another titan, Napoleon Bonaparte, little credit for his doings. His victories in battle, his political domination, his conquests all due to chance. Tolstoy's opinion of "the great man" is not in doubt. His remarks toward the end of War and Peace are scathing. The novel follows several Russian families through the Napoleonic wars, but Tolstoy himself, it sometimes seems, is following Napoleon. The curtain is finally pulled down altogether in the First and Second Epilogues. Tolstoy addresses his reader, and makes his case against Napoleon, but really, against the Great Man Theory. Whether Tolstoy's assessment can be considered good history, it must be considered a masterpiece of political writing. In a few pages, Tolstoy threads a brilliant case against conquerors, opportunists, tyrants and, most of all, so-called great men. The brilliance of his thought matches the sharpness of his prose, and though Napoleon may have conquered Europe, it could be Tolstoy who has the final word. No Reply is especially excited to publish this edition in the original Russian, using the Cyrillic script, alongside a new English translation, and original illustrations. ARTIST NOTES Leo Tolstoy needs no introduction. He was the author of Anna Karenina and War and Peace, which vie neck-in-neck on many critics' lists for the greatest novel ever written. He is under-appreciated, however, as a historian and critic. This short passage, from the epilogue of War and Peace, highlights Tolstoy's multifaceted genius. Valeria Zecchini is a Russo-Italian artist, polyglot, and scholar of European politics. She brings a new translation to these overlooked passages, which aims to elucidate Tolstoy's meaning to English readers. The original Russian is dense and circuitous, and from it Zecchini has produced crystalline English prose as dense and brilliant as the original, but clear too. Her translation is complimented (with a touch of irony) by six woodblock portraits of "the great man" himself. LIKE NEW, Ships from Hawaii with free Priority Mail upgrade. Adler is undoubtedly the greatest female lead in the Holmes canon, and perhaps the person Sherlock himself admires most. As excited as we are about the re-telling of this story, we are doubly excited about Ruta Kuzmickas' original artwork. She has created a suite of pen-and-ink illustrations over a dozen in total which capture the story perfectly. Her arresting portrait of Irene on our cover is just the beginning. Arthur Conan Doyle needs no introduction. "A Scandal in Bohemia" was his first Sherlock Holmes short story and, in his own accounting, one of his greatest. No Reply Press (illustrator). small 4to. Bound by hand in handmade papers wrappers. 15, (1) pages. The Harvard Class Day Address. With Woodblocks by Michael McCurdy. Limited to 218 numbered copies and is the eighth imprint of No Reply Press. A fine copy. Printed by hand on Zerkall-bütten on a Vandercook Universal I. From the artists' website: No Reply Press is excited to announce Above All Else Do Not Lie by novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Delivered originally as a commencement address at Harvard University, her words are here rendered into an essay and published in print for the first time. An elegy for what we have lost, and a philippic for what must be preserved, Adichies address is both soaring and specific. Her counsel is poignant and memorable. As Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "In every work of genius we recognize majesty. Great works of art have no more affecting lesson for us than this. They teach us to abide by our spontaneous impression with good-humored inflexibility when the whole cry of voices is on the other side." In our estimation, Above All Else Do Not Lie is such a work. Adichies words inspire us to do what we know to be right. They serve both as a simple reminder of what is true and as a radical reframing of the world. On truth, she urges vigilant fidelity: I have always felt my best, and done my best, when I veer toward truth, when I dont lie. And the biggest regrets of my life are those times when I did not have the courage to embrace truth. Now, telling the truth does not mean that everything will work out. Actually, it sometimes doesnt. Im not asking you to tell the truth because it will always work out, but because you will sleep well at night. And there is nothing more beautiful than to wake up every day holding in your hand the full measure of your integrity. Be courageous enough to recognize those things which get in the way of telling the truth - the empty cleverness, the morally bankrupt irony, the desire to please, the deliberate obfuscation, the tendency to confuse cynicism for sophistication. In these disorienting times, where the difference between up and down is blurred, let alone between right and wrong, she offers an inspired remedy. Whether you are a leader, or whether you are the led, I urge you always to bend toward truth, to err on the side of truth. And to help you do this - Make literature your religion. Which is to say, read widely. Read fiction, and poetry, and narrative nonfiction. Make the human story the center of your understanding of the world. Think of people as people, not as abstractions who have to conform to bloodless logic, but as people - fragile, imperfect, with prides that can be wounded, and hearts that can be touched. Literature is my religion. I have learned from literature that we humans are flawed - all of us are flawed. But even while flawed we are capable of enduring goodness. We do not need first to be perfect, before we can do what is right and is just. We are inspired by Adichies faith in the power of literature to play a leading role in our perennial rediscovery of human goodness. Her words proved such an inspiration to us, in fact, that No Reply Press was founded in large part as a venture to bring them to print. They have been our north star as we have navigated the question of what to publish and why. Make literature your religion. We have adopted her words as our mission, and have striven to contribute to the written canon of human struggles and triumphs. This text is accompanied by six large illustrations by legendary woodblock artist Michael McCurdy. The address was given at Harvard Universitys historic Yard - a cow pasture which over centuries came to be at the very heart of American politics and intellectualism. Adichies immediate predecessors included President Biden, Mark Zuckerberg, and J.K. Rowling. From the exact same spot, the Marshall Plan was announced. Context is everything, and Adichies address, though universal in its message, was not given in a vacuum. Therefore, her words are accompanied by McCurdys woodblock visions of the nature and structures between which her words echoed. The monumentalism, the history, the majesty (and perhaps even the inequity) provide key context. Furthermore, they are glorious in their scope and incredible in their detail. They are among the finest of McCurdys works, and have been painstakingly printed to preserve the warmth and depth of the originals. Artist's Notes: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a novelist whose work has won international acclaim. The Times Literary Supplement has called her "the most prominent" of a new generation of African writers. In our estimation, hers is an essential voice of compassionate and thoughtful public discourse. We are honored to publish Above All Else Do Not Lie, her private press debut. Michael McCurdy was a giant of woodblock illustration and the book arts. As the proprietor of the Penmaen Press and contributor to many others, Michael McCurdy helped shape the fine press movement (and woodblocks centrality in it) over the twentieth century. He passed away in 2016, when a project which might use these long-shelved woodblocks was just a budding idea. This is likely his final fine press edition. Bound by hand in handmade papers wrappers.

Paperbound. Zustand: NEW. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: NEW. Ltd Edition of 300. No Reply is pleased to publish the first edition of Magnetic Storms, Twenty-three poems presented in both Ukrainian and English, with the poet's introduction. -- The edition is limited to 300 copies and is offered in two states. This is a paperbound edition with the no. 259. Hand-bound in stiff fourfold Bugra paper wrappers. 68 pages, printed throughout in two colors. Typeset in Anglecia and Stereonic faces, designed by Andriy Konstantynov and Oleh Lishchuk at Mint Type Foundry in Kiev, Ukraine Printed letterpress by hand on Hahnemühle Bugra using a Vandercook Universal I proof press. Book measures 7 ¾ by 10 ¾ inches. The fifteenth imprint of No Reply Press, Spring 2023. For years Diadchenko has been among the foremost Ukrainian writers and an advocate for the Ukrainian language on the world stage. While her manuscript was dazzling, with No Reply Press' publishing agenda already full, we did not plan to publish Magnetic Storms in 2023. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed that. Like many watching events unfold, we are left wondering, "What can we do?" Any individual action can feel vanishingly insignificant, like tossing a pebble into a river to stop its flow. Eventually, however, the pebbles can pile up. So, we must do something, however small. The role of a publisher in the internet age is not to circulate information, but to help curate what circulates and shape "the canon." While Russian literature is widely celebrated in the West, and deservingly so, Ukrainian literature has often been overlooked, or worse, subsumed as Russian literature. For those who have never experienced the power of the Ukrainian language, watch this performance from when the great Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha visited us in the Pacific Northwest several years ago. The vitality that DakhaBrakha brings to music, Lyudmyla Diadchenko brings to written poetry. The title, Magnetic Storms, captures the energy of these poems. They are riveting, vivid, electric even in translation. They have been masterfully translated by American poet Padma Thornlyre, with the assistance of Ukrainian writers Viacheslav Stelmakh and Dmitrou Teplouhov. The translation has been handled delicately, for those unable to read the original. We are sure that all readers will appreciate the power of Diadchenko's poetry. EDITION NOTES The edition is limited to 300 copies and is offered in two states. Twenty-three poems presented in both Ukrainian and English, with the poet's introduction.

From the artists' website: The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is science fiction at its finest, wielding imagination to strike at our deepest questions. It imagines a city, Omelas, in which the people are perfectly happy and prosperous and equal. In short, a utopia. But utopia is hardly believable. As the story proceeds the narrator (possibly Le Guin herself?) pleads with us to believe her description, to believe that it is not too fantastical or far-fetched. Finally, she reveals the city's dark secret: stored away somewhere in a basement is a maltreated child. The people of Omelas are forbidden from rescuing him, or even offering him comfort. Somehow (the reason is beyond their understanding), their happiness depends on the wretched suffering of just one. Do you believe in Omelas now? This science fiction masterpiece is so powerful because it leaves so much to the imagination of its reader. One reader, celebrated artist Clive Knights, has picked up where Le Guin left off, filling the space around the story in his suite of sixty-one collage artworks collectively entitled, After Omelas. To honor science fiction's vast sweep into the future, and the grounding of private presswork in our past, we have striven to achieve a design aesthetic which balances past and future. Without sacrificing the finesse of private presswork, we have tried to capture the electric power of the genre. Le Guin's haunting story faces the stunning collages of Clive Knights. We are thrilled to present his work alongside Le Guin's. Moreover, as Portland Oregon's only private press, we are honored to bring together our city's most famous writer with one of its most eminent artists. We have hoped to fuse these diverse elements into a harmonious whole in The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. The Science Fiction Trilogy: The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is the second in No Reply's Science Fiction Trilogy, three editions showcasing three of the genre's greatest short stories: 1) The Last Question by Isaac Asimov, with the woodcuts of Rockwell Kent 2) The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin, with collages by Clive Knights 3) The Men Return by Jack Vance, introduced by the author's son and with linocuts by Karol Pomykala These three stories pushed the frontiers of the genre. They strikingly demonstrate that Science Fiction is not actually the realm of spaceships and time-travel, so much as the realm of metaphysics and our place in the universe. No Reply is proud to present them together, alongside an extraordinary cast of contributors. The Artist Clive Knights is a widely celebrated collage artist and director of the Portland State University School of Architecture. For the past year, he has kept a collage sketchbook, responding to the story with art. His interaction with the text is profound, providing a suite of artwork which exemplifies the ability of art to explain the unexplainable and explore what we fail to grasp in words. Our edition features eight of Clive's collages, reproduced giclée on archival plates and tipped-in by hand on a secondary paper throughout the book. They are entitled: Jettisoned, size migration, heart beaten, crimson isle, city of ashes, council of idiots, nearly as wide, and figmentation. It would be a shame, though, for readers to only enjoy the eight collages picked for inclusion. Therefore, No Reply Press is offering a companion volume to The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas entitled After Omelas. Hand-bound in a German-style binding; mirror foil tooling over a Japanese cloth spine, lucite slipcase.

There's no mistaking why; it boldly fulfills the promise of its title. In a universe which is expanding, cooling, and dissipating, this legendary Science Fiction writer looks into the future to earnestly grapple with the fate of, well, everything. The answer is surprising, fulfilling, even moving. As Asimov said, "The ending seems to stick with people." To honor Science Fiction's vast sweep into the future, and the grounding of private presswork in our past, we have striven to achieve a design aesthetic which balances past and future. Without sacrificing the finesse of private presswork, we have striven to capture the electric power of the genre. Our experimental typography in this edition features four typefaces, interweaving and overlapping with the stunning woodcuts of Rockwell Kent. Few artists wrestled so poignantly with our place in the universe. We are thrilled to have been given the permission of his estate to print a suite of his masterpieces alongside this story. From the artists' website: The Men Return is sui generis - nearly impossible to define. Science fiction of the absurd? Psychedelica? Metaphysical horror? Existentialist monograph. with monsters? When Jack Vance wrote The Men Return in 1957, science fiction had not yet delved into the truly experimental. While it had toyed with time, space, spaceships and timetravel, the laws of reality remained firmly unbroken. Vance pushed the envelope - and far. The Men Return tells the story of a place where the connection between cause and effect has been severed. Imagine that! Vance did, and in his wild imaginations a novel form of fiction was born. Karol Pomykala is a celebrated linocut artist, whose pieces, collectively entitled "Mirage," are an exhilarating match for Vance's up-is-down storytelling. Painstakingly cut by hand, Karol's artwork is intricately detailed. The depth of such detail can really only be captured with relief printing, so we are thrilled to present his work letterpress. The edition features five such linocuts. On hardbound copies, the artwork is overprinted with striking splashes of color as shapes float through and among a disorienting terrain. John Vance is the author's son, who has generously penned an introduction for the first private press edition of his father's work.
