The author traces the artist's ideas as they are gradually developed through his art, and explores in depth the effects, personal and professional, of influential contemporaries such as Flaxman and Fuseli. The book encompasses all phases of Blake's art, including the highly complex Illuminated Books, hitherto the almost exclusive domain of the literary historian. Dr Bindman's interpretation of the ideas embodied in their design gives access to a greater understanding of the text than previously available, and he emphasizes the essential unity of Blake's apparently diverse activities as artist, poet, prophet and craftsman. The argument of this scholarly and challenging monograph is reinforced with nearly 200 illustrations, including 4 in colour, which reproduce many of Blake's major works as well as some of his lesser~known ones.
