In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. It's 1939 and Hitler just invaded Poland. Henry is 13 years old, and unbeknownst to him or his family, his life is about to change forever. Soon he is torn from his siblings and parents and finds himself packed into a covered truck with dozens of desperate strangers. He doesn't have any idea where he's going or when he'll be let out, if ever. Henry is now struggling for his life in one of the most diabolical and murderous events in human history - the Nazi plan to exterminate every last Jew in Europe.Travel with him to a munition's factory in his home town of Radom, where he is forced to labour 12 hours a day with barely enough rations to keep him alive. Discover how he manages to obtain extra food through ingenuity and a willingness to risk his life. Would we have the courage to do the same? Follow Henry to an airstrip in Unterriexingen where he is put to work in the freezing cold with barely any clothes and no shoes to protect him from the elements. Learn how, during an Allied air strike, he escapes to a nearby farmhouse where he pleads with the owner to take him in after he's caught eating with the swine. Feel what it's like to hold a Luger for the first time while Henry struggles with the idea of killing the Nazi officer who allows him to clean his pistol and shine his boots, when he is not forced to work building what would someday become his own prison. Would you pull the trigger? Walk with Henry on a 'death march' through the streets of Germany with no end in sight, having to endure the taunts of passersby who yell nasty epithets and throw stones at him while he reaches for a discarded apple core and is stabbed in the back by a Nazi soldier's bayonet. How many of us would have the strength to continue in such circumstances? This true-to-life story shines as a beacon of hope and perseverance and serves as a backdrop-narrative to remind us that racism and hate can lead to murderous behaviour and the rapid destruction of civil society. Every Last Jew is a beautifully written memoir by Henry's son Mark Koperweis that will take you on a journey that is up-close, personal, and in full living horror. When you emerge, you will never again see the world or your life in the same way. It will change you, as it did Henry, forever.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. First used in the 15th century, the word transparent has origins in the Medieval Latin - transparere, meaning to show through. Its original Latin derivation is trans + parere, meaning to show oneself. The projects in this book point to an architecture that seemingly suggests a multiplicity of qualities. Paradoxically, it is also an architecture that reveals itself and its own singular nature clearly. The structures themselves display their own material and organisational logic, yet they are also able to function as containers for thought, moods, and memories. The inhabitant then moves through and interacts, in a live and changing world. Activities happen all at once, in a seamless whole, in a simultaneity of experience. This is an architecture of natural processes in the revealed landscape, entropic and vital, where the normal boundaries and usual edges do not hold. The experimental drawings, texts, and built projects in Transparent Architecture are visual and spatial explorations. They aim toward architecture that provokes thought, refines one's abilities to see, and embraces the ongoing confluence and mutability of things.

The book is set in the historical period of Enver Oxa, but in the northern countryside of Albania people are raised and live according to the rules of Lek Dukagjin's Kanun.Alida's father falls victim to a revenge sanctioned by the Kanun: a bullet in the back, which causes a severe injury and makes him lose the use of his legs. This given, one of his daughters has to become a Burrnesh, or 'Sworn Virgin': a man.The chosen one is Alida, who is forced by her mother to undergo a transformation that makes her lose her life as a woman. Such operation follows an archaic ritual in which any aspects of womanhood are erased in front of the leaders of the Twelve Clans, and it is her own mother to perform it: she cuts Alida's hair very short, she binds her breasts until they disappear, and then Alida has to wear her father's clothes. Alida is now allowed to drink, smoke, and handle weapons as if she really were man, since the ritual and her vow of chastity have transformed her into a man - on the surface. And she will actually deal with all male typical duties, but never giving up her femininity, or the desire to become a mother. It thus begins an incredible journey that will bring her to the United States, where Alida will be reborn and become again the woman she was.(Translated to English from Italian.).

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Shaped Places of Carroll County New Hampshire expands upon an award-winning speculative urban design project by the architecture and design practice EXTENTS, led by McLain Clutter and Cyrus Pen~arroyo. The project investigates the complex reciprocity between who we are and the shape of where we live; between identities and the built environments that support them. In doing so, Shaped Places creates a dialogue between seemingly disparate discourses spanning from critical geography, to formalist art criticism, to the urbanisation strategies of the early 20th century Russian avant garde. The role of the rural-urban divide in affirming the divided political landscape in the United States is a central theme in the work. The project culminates in the design of three linear cities in Carroll County, New Hampshire. In each speculative urban design proposal, rural and urban patterns of development and divergent lifestyles are combined in urban design proposals intended to produce a functional body politic from a sharply divided population.
Hardback. Zustand: New. Arches to Zigzags introduces its audience (both young and old) to the world of architecture through the alphabet. It challenges young readers with new words and images, while adults will widen their own knowledge of architecture. Captivating images and clever wordplay entertain folks of all ages to explore the built environment. The book begins its journey through architecture with an Arch (for the letter A), then a Balcony, and next on to Column Capitals. Along the way, readers will learn about some less-familiar architectural examples (like Finial, for instance), Keystone, Obelisk, and Quoin. Each letter and its corresponding image are described with light verse, which asks the reader some quick questions about what they see. This colourful, lively, and entertaining book closes with some thoughts about what architecture is, why it's important, and where you'll find examples of architecture in the buildings you visit and use every day. There's also information on the location and history of each of the 26 beautiful images in the book, in case you want to check them out on your own. Created by an architect, writer, photographer, and librarian, Arches to Zigzags connects architecture with the letters of the alphabet, from A to Z.
Paperback. Zustand: New. The Labyrinth of Rooms is a story with one character, Human, who is an allegorical representation of us all. Human suddenly awakes in a square room with no memory of a prior life. A corridor leads them from that room to the next, then another, and so on until they reach the end of a 63-room labyrinth. As the journey progresses, Human contemplates their surroundings, studying the unique shape of each room and how it affects their thoughts, feelings, and actions. To understand the significance of the rooms' architecture, Human engages in different types of thinking: questioning why the rooms were designed as such, imagining situations the rooms can host, praising what they find geometrically pleasing, speculating about the nature of the labyrinth, and even complaining about their forced existence within it. This variety is reflected in the writing of the book, which intentionally juxtaposes different genres, including storytelling, philosophical reasoning, dialogues, and prose poetry. In The Labyrinth of Rooms, the human life is conceived as a series of settings, or stated otherwise: a coevolution of our mental space and physical space.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. The business of architecture - shaped by anti-trust legislation and pro-corporate governmental policies - has created an extractive, inequitable, and precarious environment for its practitioners. These pressures have led many small firms, which make up roughly three quarters of architecture offices in the United States, to adopt diverse, ad-hoc organisational and survival strategies. In their very precarity, these small firms offer fertile grounds to test more resilient structures. One such model, the worker cooperative, offers a critical mode of practice that is equitable, democratic, and addresses the systemic inequalities that plague the profession.Practice Practice addresses the parallel trajectories of cooperatives in the United States and the professionalisation of architecture. This contextual background highlights the coincident struggles of the labour movement and the emergence of the architectural corporation. Within this context, the cooperative model is presented as a challenge to the prevailing conditions of the profession. Logistical frameworks for creating an architectural cooperative - including diagrams, sample operating agreements, and bylaws - are offered for any firm looking to transition or incorporate anew. The book projects the social, economic, and aesthetic benefits of the architectural cooperative by taking stock of cooperatives in other industries. Finally, Practice Practice presents a vision for a cooperative network of small architecture firms as imagined in collaboration with the Architecture Lobby. This book situates, celebrates, and envisions a future for small firms. Throughout the book, interviews, office visits, site visits, and field notes document encounters with over twenty such firms. These offices demonstrate the subversive agency harnessed by small firms. If the cooperative model were to infiltrate such sites, the nature of practice and industry would transform. Built work would reflect ever more diverse sensibilities, minority workers' voices would be uplifted, and workers would earn equity through ownership. Architects would enter the solidarity economy, transforming their communities.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Clean Slate combines Dogen's poetry with images of plants he might have seen during his lifetime while living in Japan. With the support of Kyoto University and the San Francisco Botanical Garden Library, Marcia was able to complete research that led to a list of plants that are recorded to have existed in Japan during the 13th century. She made it her intention to find and photograph these specimens. The gathering of these images is not to make a scientific analysis, rather to consider and imagine what beauty provoked his writing.Japanese literature is well populated with descriptions of beauty and imperfection. Marcia's pictures isolate and render the plant so that it no longer is a member of a garden, but rather an example, a cue, an object that invites the viewer. Alone in the garden. Throughout the history of literature there are inquiries as to where an author lived; what studio setting a painter worked in; what musical melodies influenced a composer's ater work. Clean Slate brings the rhyme of Dogen together with the glance of things both he and Lieberman might have seen.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Philosophy exercises a massive influence on contemporary architectural culture and the understanding of the built environment. Discussions of architects and architectural academics are heavily loaded with theoretical ideas, concepts and views imported from the works of philosophers. At the same time this architectural employment of philosophy rarely goes beyond the tendency to mine philosophical works for ideas, words and phrases and use them, often without much understanding, in order to promote architectural agendas and embellish theoretical claims made by architects and academics. The book presents the history of this phenomenon for the past 100 years. It describes and analyses numerous, often funny, entertaining as well as embarrassing, examples of false intellectual pretence and pompous but incompetent philosophical posturing by prominent architects and architectural academics of the era and their efforts to bamboozle readers, colleagues and the general public. The book presents a powerful criticism of modernist views on architecture and argues that the rise of obfuscation and philosophical posturing among architects and architectural academics is a defensive strategy intended to draw attention away from the failure of Modernism in architecture.

In this book, we review a set of Plan:b projects in Colombia through the environmental, social, and voluntary constraints we faced, and the interim agreements we built around them. We carry out a reconstruction of the central facts behind these buildings through an "inverse" exercise - explaining each project based on contextual constraints and not on singular architectural ideas. We review the work of other authors and the way they understand limitations and difficulties that are part of their creative activity and attempt to generate a broad reflective base to approach our architectural projects and the predominant role that restrictions have played in them.

Something like the infamous "10 top things to do in Florence" that you can find in many websites? All of the above, but not only and not mainly. Formally, the book consists of a list of 20 suggestions (or paternal exhortations, if you will) for the 14 weeks of a regular academic semester. Twenty reflections (the book has been written during the 2020 lockdown in Firenze) that I have drawn from 20 years of teaching architecture students abroad. Is this book addressed to students only? If students are those who pay tuition fees to a school, then these pages are not addressed to them only. But if students are all those people who are curious and still able to learn something from anything (either through an officially organised program or on their own), then this book is indeed for students.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Artificial mountains are a worldwide reality. Their presence influenced the history of urbanism, architecture, and landscape architecture. Burial sites use, very frequently, the intimidating shape of the man-made mountain. Incense burners in ancient China evoked the Five Sacred Mountains. Mount Parnassus in Greece became an important element in European garden history and a symbol of the Renaissance. In the Baroque Rome of the 17th century the most important artists worked on the constructions of huge ephemeral mounds in order to express more or less codified messages. The model of the artificial mountain was used as well during the French Revolution: the famous celebration of the Supreme Being took place on a gigantic faux mountain. The history of landscape architecture is characterized by the construction of architectural mounds, often built by using local excavation material. The industrial revolution acted as another source for the rise of an anthropic topography, creating forms, which we do not recognise anymore as totally artificial. Architects have found in the form of mountains a model and a gestalt with which to play in an ironic way. In twentieth-century art, mountains are ubiquitous, culminating in Robert Smithson's masterful exploration of reversed, displaced, and rebuilt mountains. Michael Jakob's study is the first one to address this fascinating worldwide phenomenon stretching from Antiquity to our days.

For physics, time is a byproduct of so called space-time, elastic goo created at the very moment that something came from nothing; the moment eternity stopped and the universe began. For geology, time is 4.5 billion years of compression and catastrophe. For biology time is 3.5 billion years of diversification and now the urgency of the sixth extinction. For anthropology time is 150 thousand years since mitochondrial Eve walked out of the rift valley in Ethiopia. For historians, time begins with Herodotus (484 BC) and ends, or rather doesn't, with Fukuyama's The End of History. For architecture time is ruination. For landscape architecture time is ephemerality, entropy, and growth. For all of us time is running out. Contents: Editorial by Richard Weller and Tatum L. Forced to work remotely because of COVID-19, daily walks and bike rides became an essential distraction from hours of uninterrupted screen time. Photography became a pastime, and as weeks turned into months the city began to present itself anew: streets, plazas, parks, church grounds, cemeteries, and untold nooks and crannies not before seen or recorded. Trees soon began to dominate the compositions, as if beckoning to stand out against the gridiron construction. And so, the project began: to record the presence of trees as foreground actors of the everyday urban landscape. Beginning in the spring of 2020, hundreds of photographs were taken, often times of the same tree at different times of the day, under varying light conditions, and through the seasons. A sense of intimacy developed: of seeing how a plant breathes-in the city over time, silently, exhaling in return nurturing permanence and resilience.
