Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Scarce cloth hardcover, no ISBN, 201 pages, NOT ex-library. Published in a limited scholarly edition of 1200 copies. Gentle external staining on page edges, a short tear in upper rear hinges, else book is very good: clean, untanned, with unmarked text and firm binding, free of inscriptions and stamps. Dust jacket shows a tear in upper front flap, tiny areas of loss and fraying in corners, a bit of sunning, faint dusty marks. -- Contents: Preface / Bogdan Suchodolski; Introduction / Marian Dobrowolski; Documentation of Copernican in Quincentenary Celebrations [Celebrations; Exhibitions; Philately]; Biography and Social Background of Copernicus / Marian Biskup; Astronomy of Copernicus / Jerzy Dobrzycki; Scientific Reception of the Copernican Theory / Eugeniusz Rybka; Recent Research on Attitudes to Copernicus' Astronomical Theory / Zofia Wardeska; Copernican Bibliography: Selected Materials for the Years 1972-1975 / Henryk Baranowski -- "The quincentennial of Copernicus' birth was marked by worldwide celebrations. A world event, its scope can hardly be compared to the currency Copernican ideas had received in the 16th century, restricted as they had been to the European cultural sphere. The commemorative and tributary celebrations were joined by numerous North and South American, as well as Asian, countries whose own cultural legacies pertaining to Copernicus' time could have provided them with no record of his name, or theories, or hinted at controversies they had once provoked. The broad scope of the quincentennial celebrations may serve as a yardstick, a particularly remarkable and important one too, of progress the nations of the word have made towards the building of an universal intellectual culture common to the entire human race. But also a source of expectations that this trend will continue despite the actually existing or impending difficulties and disagreements observed in various fields of international relations. Organized by remote and often alien countries, the celebrations proved that there is an intellectual unity in the world endeavoring to lay foundations towards a world community. Registrars of these celebrations working in Poland, the land of Copernicus, had a sense of the world's unity stronger perhaps than the one that could be harboured at any other place of the world." [from the Preface].

It is impossible, however, to understand the evolution of scientific methods leading to modern thought, without a thorough study of 15th-century sources. This is especially true for optics, astronomy, as well as for arithmetic and trigonometry, as applied to astronomy e.g. by Giovanni Bianchini. Jane L. Jervis' Cometary Theory in Fifteenth-Century Europe contains perfect examples of different methodological approaches of fifteenth century scholars to problems arising from the observations of the sky. Mrs Jervis shows how Jacobus Angelus (1402), still staying on the level of qualitative description of phenomena, departs from Aristotle's treatment of comets as objects of a meteorological nature, in favor of Seneca's conception considering a comet as a celestial body, namely a planet, which, owing to its eccentric orbit, can only be seen in the lower part of that orbit. Peurbach (1456) on the other hand determines quantitatively the lower part of the comet's orbit, taking for granted, according to Aristotelian cosmology, that its upper part is limited by the lunar sphere. Regiomontanus (1472) "devised a theoretical method for determining a comet's size and distance [.] but he did not apply the method". Finally, Toscanelli (1433, 1456) was interested in a purely quantitative analysis of phenomena, based on systematic observations and devoid of any cosmological speculation." (from the Foreword by Grazyna Rosinska) -- Contents: Foreword; Introduction; 1. Cometary Theory in Antiquity; 2. The Medieval Tradition of Cometary Theory, to 1400; 3. The Fifteenth-Century Astronomical Context; 4. Jacobus Angelus [Jacopo d'Angelo]; 5. Paolo Toscanelli [Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli]; 6. Georg Peurbach [Georg von Peuerbach]; 7.
