Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. 116 pages. First/only edition. Black cloth binding, ribbon marker, no dust jacket, as issued. Color portrait frontispiece. Inscribed by subject OTTO NEMENZ with marker on the half-title page: "Thanks for your Friendship, Otto". Some ink bleed from signature through to frontispiece. A clean, unmarked, tight and well-kept copy otherwise, no flaws to report. Nemenz (1941-2025) was one of those people who made Hollywood run: A camera crew worker, cinematographer, Academy member, and, most importantly a camera/lens innovator and equipment rental firm owner. But the biography takes you all the way back to his origins in Austria. A lot of very specific Hollywood information which couldn't be sourced elsewhere. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj) (see Notes) (illustrator). 1st Editions (see Notes). [all six books are in excellent condition, with no significant wear other than some age-toning to the edges of the text block of #6 (Relic), but each volume having a one-time owner's initials plus the date & place of purchase in ink along the edge of the rear pastedown (concealed beneath the jacket flap); the jackets themselves are in universally flawless condition]. A very nice full set of this series of mysteries set in Tudor England, each having the same basic subtitle: "Being the __th journal of Sir Roger Shallot concerning certain wicked conspiracies and horrible murders perpetrated in the reign of King Henry VIII." This is one of a number of mystery series by this prolific author (many written under various pseudonyms ("Paul Harding," "C.L. Grace" and others)) set in specific historical periods -- usually in England, although with occasional forays into Egypt, Ancient Rome, and other settings. Sir Roger Shallot, the protagonist of this series, is described as a "self-proclaimed doctor and physician, rogue, charlatan and secret emissary of King Henry VIII and his Satanic Eminence Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Chancellor of England." Edition notes: "White Rose" (1993), "Brood" (1996) and "Gallows" (1996) are all First U.S. Editions, published by St. Martin's Press, with dust jacket illustrations by Lars Hokenson ("White Rose" only) and Richard Jones; "Chalice" (1994) and "Grail" (1994; a 2nd printing) were published by Otto Penzler Books, with jacket design/illustration by William Sloan/Three; and "Relic" (1996) is the true first (U.K.) edition, published by Headline Book Publishing, jacket illustration by Richard Jones. (The books are listed in the order published, originally in the U.K., but the dates shown here are the dates of the particular editions.) NOTE again that each book has its one-time owner's initials plus the date & place of his purchase written in ink on the rear pastedown, but discreetly concealed beneath the jacket flap; if I hadn't told you these notes were there, I doubt if you'd have ever noticed them. ****Also NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this 6-book set; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. Original Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. Reprint. Reprint. Original Wraps. Histoire des sciences traces the history of chemistry in the Middle Ages. Marcellin Berthelot (sometimes spelled Marcelin), born on October 25, 1827 in Paris where he died on March 18, 1907, is a French chemist, physical chemist, biologist, epistemologist and politician. The fundamental conception that underlay all Berthelot's chemical work was that all chemical phenomena depend on the action of physical forces which can be determined and measured. When he began his active career it was generally believed that, although some instances of the synthetic production of organic substances had been observed, on the whole organic chemistry remained an analytical science and could not become a constructive one, because the formation of the substances with which it deals required the intervention of vital activity in some shape. He made significant contributions to the field through his translations and analyses of Greek, Syriac, and Arabic treatises on chemistry and alchemy. His research into these historical Arabic texts allowed him to distinguish between different traditions of practical and theoretical alchemy and provided deeper insights into the origins and development of chemistry. From the personal library collection of Brian Cotnoir, alchemist, artist and award-winning filmmaker. Author of Practical Alchemy: Guide to the Great Work, The Emerald Tablet, a series of Alchemical 'Zines, Alchemical Meditations, Alchemy: The Poetry of Matter and most recently On Alchemy: Essential Practices and Making Art as Alchemy. He has presented seminars and workshops around the world on various aspects of the alchemy. Khepri Press was started in 2014 as a place to organize and distribute his work. It is a very small press dedicated to alchemical book arts. Some of this work is publishable and others may exist only in manuscript or object form - alchemical results or talismans. Light shelfwear, else tight, bright, and unmarred. 8vo. 408pp. 255pp. Illus. (b/w). Text in French translation and Arabic. Tabbed by former owner. Former owner library stamp.
