While this should mean freedom to move forward with information to access all that's needed to live a fulfilling and rewarding life, the huge obstacles that exist in reality can make a diagnosis a cause for dismay. Furthermore, the way in which the diagnosis is delivered is often done without thought or preparation and consequently ensures lasting emotional trauma to the individuals involved and their loved ones. The aim of this thought-provoking booklet is to directly challenge the method and moment a diagnosis is given, so that it can become the defining opportunity to set individuals and their families off on a positive, hopeful path rather than a negative, diminished one. Each 'rule' speaks powerfully with the voice of the individual or family on the receiving end of diagnosis. Together, the 10 rules provide a useful starting point for discussion and a catalyst for action. Each is followed by suggestions for positive practices. The booklet also contains additional background information on good practice, together with references and sources of further information. The booklet has been written for anyone involved in providing diagnoses and follow-up support to autistic people, those with learning disabilities and their families, together with allied professionals, carers and student in relevant disciplines. It can be used for a wide range of purposes, including staff induction, learning disability and autism awareness training, individual professional development and reflection, and team discussions about the quality of practice and services provided.

This powerful booklet aims to challenge our thinking about the way we communicate and interact with autistic people and those with learning (intellectual) disabilities. The '10 Rules' concept sets out to be deliberately provocative, by suggesting ways in which people, services and environments can unconciously create problems and obstacles for those they seek to support. Each communication 'rule' speaks powerfully with the voice of the individual on the receiving end of services and practice. Together, the 10 rules provide a useful starting point for discussion and a catalyst for action. Each is followed by suggestions for positive practice. The booklet also contains additional background information on good practice, together with references and sources of further information. The booklet can be used for a range of purposes, including staff induction, awareness training, individual professional development and reflection, and discussions regarding service development and design. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. People with learning disabilities often depend on others for the support they need in order to live their lives. For this reason, effective communication is essential if people with learning disabilities are to secure rights, inclusion, choice and independence. The degree to which individuals depend on the support of others varies from one person to the next - support may be for just a couple of hours a week to do the shopping and make sure the bills get paid, or, for an individual with high support needs, it may be round-the-clock help from a small team of personal assistants. For all individuals, however, the effectiveness of the support provided depends on the quality of the relationship between the individual and those who support them. The quality of this relationship depends, in turn, on the quality of the communication between them. This care quality guide is based on the training pack Effective Communication with People with Learning Disabilities, and explains the fundamental basics of good communication to inspire care workers to think about the way they communicate with the people in their care. The booklet distils the information in the main training pack and includes new and unique content to allow for individual study. It explores the EPIC model of communication, devised by the authors, and how the four elements of this model need to be in place for good communication to take place: E - the communication Environment P - The communication Partner I - The Individual's communication skills C - The communication Culture In this model, the communication partner is the essential element of the jigsaw that needs to be in place for all the others to connect. It also covers how to avoid communication breaking down, and practical guidance for techniques to repair if and when it does, and provides descriptions of a wide range of communication techniques and aids to further enhance work with people with learning disabilities, such as gesture and eye gaze, pictures and photographs, visual timetables and hi-tech communication aids using iPads, for example, or other technological supports.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. In the Delicious Conversations Phoebe Caldwell offers us her personal insights into how we can experience intimacy with those on the autistic spectrum, based on years of experience working in the field. The book deals not only with ways of working in a professional context but also takes a more general look at the nature of affective communication and how we can learn to 'read' other people by recognising our subconscious reactions to their body language. Autism is a condition characterised by aloneness, separation and inward focus. Through her compelling reflections Caldwell shows us that by tuning in to our partners' body language we can not only communicate with people with autism but also share an emotional connection, helping to combat the isolating nature of autistic spectrum conditions. Caldwell offers practical advice for ways that we can tap into our intuitive minds and share an intimate connection with our communication partners, building a dialogue that does not rely on speech but makes use of all of our senses.Using examples from her own experience Caldwell emphasises that these techniques can help to alleviate the distress that may be at the route of stereotypic behaviours, by communicating with people on their own terms and in their own 'language'. Delicious Conversations will be of interest not just to professionals working in the field or family members and carers of people with autism, but to anyone with a curiosity about the nature of affective communication.

Sometimes being a parent seems like one long to-do list: taking the children to and from school and clubs, arranging babysitters, feeding them and putting them to bed. Parents can feel trapped in a straitjacket of tasks, all of which prevent them spending quality time with their children. Susan Boegels has developed and delivered training on this subject for over twenty years. Now, for the first time, she shares her expertise, along with her experiences as a mother and child, with a general audience. In a series of accessible chapters, she shows how we can find a balance between "doing" and "being" modes when interacting with our children. She also explains how to deal with stress, conflict and guilt, and how to cultivate conscious, unbiased attention in a simple way. Together, the chapters form an 11-week course in mindful parenting, supported by simple exercises and guided audio meditations.

As people who have a learning disability grow older, we need to ensure that support and services are geared towards meeting changing physical and mental health needs. The main objective of the guide is to promote holistic support that will maintain the abilities of the person with a learning disability and dementia and provide services that meet their individual needs. It is important that people with a learning disability and dementia:* have choice and control over the support and services they receive, now and in the future* maintain meaningful and supportive relationships with family, friends and the wider community* remain in their own accommodation, if appropriate and desired. Each section in this self-study guide is structured around one of ten topic areas, ranging from background information about learning disability and dementia to end-of-life planning. Each topic area will prompt thinking about practice and development of skills, promoting changes to support which are focused around each individual, rather than expecting the person to fit the service. Tools are included as part of each topic. They may be copied as handouts, or used as part of staff discussions. Some can also be displayed or available in a designated staff area for staff to read.A link is provided to Supporting Derek: a short two-part film featuring actors with a learning disability. This will provide practical examples of some of the issues discussed in this guide and is an essential resource when completing some of the activities. This guide can be used for your continuing professional development. If you are a manager, you might like to ask your staff members or students to work through it section-by-section, completing the activities each contains. Their responses can be discussed as part of on-going reflection and supervision or discussed at a staff handover meeting. The guide can help staff to prepare for quality checks and inspections and can contribute towards meeting national care standards. There is also a copy of this guide included in the Supporting People with Learning Disabilities and Dementia training pack as background for those facilitating training programmes.

Pathways through Long-Term Health Conditions is a self-help guide for people living with a chronic illness, based on a Lifestyle Medicine approach and the Pathways Model which has been developed by the authors over many years. Long-term conditions - chronic problems such as cancer, heart disease, depression, arthritis and IBS - constitute the greatest treatment challenge of our times. Many of us will suffer from such problems in our lifetimes, and by and large we do not have much control over this. Where we do have a measure of power, however, is in our lifestyle choices and the personal decisions that we make. Focusing on this aspect of long-term illness, Your Pathway Through Chronic Illness is a hopeful and uplifting book that empowers readers to take action on their own behalf. Through clear explanations and enlightening case examples, the authors explain how to apply the three-step Pathways Model of self-care (deciding to change - mastering skills - more sophisticated strategies) in order to help individuals take better care of themselves, and to feel more active and empowered in partnership with professional providers.

Key features: Written by a leading expert in the subject; compendium of three titles; supported by numerous case histories and interpretation of real-life examples; accessible and engaging; practical advice for people working in the field. About the resource The three texts brought together in this handbook offer a new perspective for those supporting people with ASD and/or profound and multiple learning disabilities. Caldwell emphasises the importance of shifting the focus away from the label of 'challenging behaviour' and instead offers practical advice for ways that we can help to alleviate the distress that may be at the route of such behaviours, by communicating with people on their own terms and in their own 'language'.She uses multiple case studies from her years of experience in the field to illustrate Intensive Interaction and the innovative techniques that she has developed for entering the person's world, as they experience it, and approaching two-way communication from this perspective. The compendium includes a new introduction written by Caldwell and You Don't Know What It's Like also features an updated 'GP's viewpoint' provided by Dr Matt Hoghton. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. A Mismatch of Salience brings together a range of Damian Milton's writings that span more than a decade. The book explores the communication and understanding difficulties that can create barriers between people on the autism spectrum and neurotypical people. It celebrates diversity in communication styles and human experience by re framing the view that autistic people represent a `disordered other' not as an impairment, but a two-way mismatch of salience. It also looks at how our current knowledge has been created by non-autistic people on the `outside', looking in. A Mismatch of Salience attempts to redress this balance.
