Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - SHORTLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE 2013Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary is the moving story of the Virgin Mary, told by a novelist famous for writing brilliantly about the family. From the author of Brooklyn, in a voice that is both tender and filled with rage, The Testament of Mary tells the story of a cataclysmic event which led to an overpowering grief. For Mary, her son has been lost to the world, and now, living in exile and in fear, she tries to piece together the memories of the events that led to her son's brutal death. To her he was a vulnerable figure, surrounded by men who could not be trusted, living in a time of turmoil and change. As her life and her suffering begin to acquire the resonance of myth, Mary struggles to break the silence surrounding what she knows to have happened. In her effort to tell the truth in all its gnarled complexity, she slowly emerges as a figure of immense moral stature as well as a woman from history rendered now as fully human.Praise for The Testament of Mary:'This is a short book, but it is as dense as a diamond. It is as tragic as a Spanish pieta, but it is completely heretical.Tóibín maintains all the dignity of Mary without subscribing to the myths that have accumulated around her' Edmund White, Irish Times'Depicting the harrowing losses and evasions that can go on between mothers and sons.Tóibín creates a reversed Pièta: he holds the mother in his arms' Independent 'A beautiful and daring work.it takes its power from the surprise of its language, its almost shocking characterization' Mary Gordon, New York Times.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A dark classic of Russia's silver age, this blackly funny novel recounts a schoolteacher's descent into sadism, arson and murder.Mad, lascivious, sadistic and ridiculous, the provincial schoolteacher Peredonov torments his students and has hallucinatory fantasies about acts of savagery and degradation, yet to everyone else he is an upstanding member of society. As he pursues the idea of marrying to gain promotion, he descends into paranoia, sexual perversion, arson, torture and murder. Sologub's anti-hero is one of the great comic monsters of twentieth-century fiction, subsequently lending his name to the brand of sado-masochism known as Peredonovism. The Little Demon (1907) made an immediate star of its author who, refuting suggestions that the work was autobiographical, stated 'No, my dear contemporaries . it is about you'. This grotesque mirror of a spiritually bankrupt society is arguably the finest Russian novel to have come out of the Symbolist movement.Fyodor Sologub was born in St Petersburg in 1863. His first two novels Bad Dreams (1896) and The Little Demon (1907) were drawn from his own experiences as schoolmaster in a remote provincial town. For many years Sologub could not find a publisher for The Little Demon but when in 1907 the novel was at last published - to immediate and resounding success - he was able to leave his restricting career and devote himself to literature. In 1921 his wife committed suicide and Sologub died a few years later in 1927. Ronald Wilks studied Russian language and literature at Trinity College,Cambridge, after training as a Naval interpreter, and later Russian literature at London University. He has translated many works from Russian for Penguin Classics, including books by Gorky, Gogol, Pushkin, Tolstoy and Chekhov.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The pacy, sensitive and formidably argued history of the causes of the First World War, from acclaimed historian and author Christopher ClarkFINANCIAL TIMES BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2014SUNDAY TIMES and INDEPENDENT BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2012Winner of the Los Angeles Times History Book Prize 2014The moments that it took Gavrilo Princip to step forward to the stalled car and shoot dead Franz Ferdinand and his wife were perhaps the most fateful of the modern era. An act of terrorism of staggering efficiency, it fulfilled its every aim: it would liberate Bosnia from Habsburg rule and it created a powerful new Serbia, but it also brought down four great empires, killed millions of men and destroyed a civilization. What made a seemingly prosperous and complacent Europe so vulnerable to the impact of this assassination In The Sleepwalkers Christopher Clark retells the story of the outbreak of the First World War and its causes. Above all, it shows how the failure to understand the seriousness of the chaotic, near genocidal fighting in the Balkans would drag Europe into catastrophe.Reviews:'Formidable . one of the most impressive and stimulating studies of the period ever published' Max Hastings, Sunday Times'Easily the best book ever written on the subject . A work of rare beauty that combines meticulous research with sensitive analysis and elegant prose. The enormous weight of its quality inspires amazement and awe . Academics should take note: Good history can still be a good story' Washington Post'A lovingly researched work of the highest scholarship. It is hard to believe we will ever see a better narrative of what was perhaps the biggest collective blunder in the history of international relations' Niall Ferguson'[Reading The Sleepwalkers], it is as if a light had been turned on a half-darkened stage of shadowy characters cursing among themselves without reason . [Clark] demolishes the standard view . The brilliance of Clark's far-reaching history is that we are able to discern how the past was genuinely prologue . In conception, steely scholarship and piercing insights, his book is a masterpiece' Harold Evans, New York Times Book Review'Impeccably researched, provocatively argued and elegantly written . a model of scholarship' Sunday Times Books of the Year'Superb . effectively consigns the old historical consensus to the bin . It's not often that one has the privilege of reading a book that reforges our understanding of one of the seminal events of world history' Mail Online'A monumental new volume . Revelatory, even revolutionary . Clark has done a masterful job explaining the inexplicable' Boston Globe'Superb . One of the great mysteries of history is how Europe's great powers could have stumbled into World War I . This is the single best book I have read on this important topic' Fareed Zakaria'A meticulously researched, superbly organized, and handsomely written account Military HistoryClark is a masterly historian . His account vividly reconstructs key decision points while deftly sketching the context driving them . A magisterial work' Wall Street Journal'This compelling examination of the causes of World War I deserves to 696 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This new Penguin volume includes the 'greatest hits' of French classical theatre, in vivid and acclaimed English translations. The plays in this volume - Cinna, The Misanthrope, Andromache and Phaedra - span only thirty-seven years, but make up the defining period of French theatre. In Corneille's Cinna (1640), absolute power is explored in ancient Rome, while Molière's The Misanthrope (1666), the only comedy in this collection, sees its anti-hero outcast for his refusal to conform to social conventions. Here also are two key plays by Racine: Andromache (1667), recounting the tragedy of Hector's widow after the Trojan War, and Phaedre (1677), showing a mother crossing the bounds of love with her son.John Edmunds' translation of Phaedra was originally broadcast on Radio Three with a cast including Prunella Scales and Timothy West, and was subsequently praised by Harold Pinter. This is the first time it has been published.Often hailed as the father of French tragedy, PIERRE CORNEILLE made his name with the tragicomedy Le Cid in 1637. His best-known works include the tragedies Horace (1640) and Cinna (1641). MOLIÈRE founded the 'Illustre Théâtre' troupe and wrote numerous comedies, including Tartuffe (1664), which was banned, Le Misanthrope (1666) and L'Avare (1668). JEAN RACINE became known as one of the period's leading playwrights, with such tragedies as Andromaque (1667), Britannicus (1669) and Phèdre (1677). After a varied career as an actor, teacher, and BBC TV national newsreader, JOHN EDMUNDS became the founder-director of Aberystwyth university's department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies. JOSEPH HARRIS is Senior Lecturer at Royal Holloway, University of London and author of Hidden Agendas: Cross-Dressing in Seventeenth-Century France (2005).

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - High Price by Carl Hart is a groundbreaking work on neuroscience and addictionAs a youth, Carl Hart didn't see the value of school, studying just enough to keep him on the basketball team. At the same time, he was immersed in street life, dealing drugs and committing petty larceny. Today, he is a cutting-edge neuroscientist whose landmark, controversial research is redefining our understanding of addiction. In this provocative and eye-opening memoir, he recalls his journey of self-discovery, how he escaped a life of crime and drugs and avoided becoming one of the crack addicts he now studies. Interweaving past and present, Hart goes beyond the hype as he examines the relationship between drugs and pleasure, choice, and motivation, both in the brain and in society. His findings shed new light on common ideas about race, poverty, and drugs and explain why current policies are failing. But while Hart escaped the ghetto, he has not turned his back on it. Determined to make a difference, he tirelessly applies his science to help save real lives. But balancing his former street life with his achievements today has not been easy-a struggle he reflects on publicly for the first time.Homocide (the inspiration for The Wire) meets Oliver Sacks' The Man Who Mistook His Wife for A Hat, this book applies neuroscience to crime, addiction and the most urgent and destructive issues of our times. Carl Hart is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry at Columbia University. He is also a Research Scientist in the Division of Substance Abuse at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He and his work are featured in Eugene Jarecki's acclaimed documentary The House I Live In. The film examines the war on drugs and highlights some of the research that Hart includes in High Price. He lives in New York City.
