In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -A Washington Post best nonfiction book pick of 2021 It is biography as an expression of love. The New York TimesNew York Times bestselling author Julie Klam s funny and moving story of the Morris sisters, distant relations with mysterious pasts. Ever since she was young, Julie Klam has been fascinated by the Morris sisters, cousins of her grandmother. According to family lore, early in the twentieth century the sisters parents decided to move the family from Eastern Europe to Los Angeles so their father could become a movie director. On the way, their pregnant mother went into labor in St. Louis, where the baby was born and where their mother died. The father left the children in an orphanage and promised to send for them when he settled in California a promise he never kept. One of the Morris sisters later became a successful Wall Street trader and advised Franklin Roosevelt. The sisters lived together in New York City, none of them married or had children, and one even had an affair with J. P. Morgan. The stories of these independent women intrigued Klam, but as she delved into them to learn more, she realized that the tales were almost completely untrue. The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters is the revealing account of what Klam discovered about her family and herself as she dug into the past. The deeper she went into the lives of the Morris sisters, the slipperier their stories became. And the more questions she had about what actually happened to them, the more her opinion of them evolved. Part memoir and part confessional, and told with the wit and honesty that are hallmarks of Klam s books, The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters is the fascinating and funny true story of one writer s journey into her family s past, the truths she brings to light, and what she learns about herself along the way. 288 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -A gripping account of one town's reckoning with the forces that strive to turn residents against each other-a story that involves racial prejudice, ecological disaster, and a significant chapter in the origin story of the modern white supremacy movement. In the late 1970s, the fishermen of Galveston Bay, Texas, were struggling to make ends meet. The ocean they relied on-which had sustained generations of shrimpers and crabbers before them-was being poisoned by nearby petrochemical plants. Meanwhile, a small but growing number of Vietnamese refugees had recently started fishing in the gulf, as well, straining the limited resources even further. The situation was a tinderbox waiting to explode, and the Grand Dragon of the Texas Knights of the Ku Klux Klan saw an opportunity to stoke the fishermen's rage and prejudices. One day in 1979, torch in hand, he strode over to an old boat graffitied with the words U.S.S. VIET CONG, and issued a 90-day deadline for the refugees to leave, or else 'it's going to be a helluva lot more violent than Vietnam!' As the boat burned, the white fishermen roared their approval, convinced that if they could drive these newcomers from the coast, everything would return to normal.A garish campaign of violence ensued, marked by burning crosses, death threats, torched boats, and armed Klansmen patrolling Galveston Bay. The Vietnamese were on the brink of fleeing, until a charismatic leader in their community named Colonel Nam convinced them to stand their ground and to take their fight to the courts. Drawing upon a trove of never-before-published material, including FBI and ATF records, unprecedented access to the SPLC's case files, and scores of firsthand interviews with Klansmen, shrimpers, law enforcement, environmental activists, lawyers, perpetrators and victims, Johnson uncovers secrets and secures confessions for crimes that have gone unsolved for more than 40 years. This gripping investigation of a forgotten story ultimately leads Johnson to the decades-long battle to save the bays from the true threat.Story Locale: Texas Gulf Coast (Galveston, Seadrift) 384 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Named a Most Anticipated Book by Bustle, Esquire, Nylon, and The Millions Intimate, thoughtful, and accessible to anyone struggling with the persistent, maddening inequities of contemporary sex. Rebecca Traister, New York Times bestselling author of Good and MadFrom Teen Vogue sex and love columnist Nona Willis Aronowitz, a blend of memoir, social history, and cultural criticism that probes the meaning of desire and sexual freedom today. At thirty-two years old, everything in Nona Willis Aronowitz s life, and in America, was in disarray. Her marriage was falling apart. Her nuclear family was slipping away. Her heart and libido were both in overdrive. Embroiled in an era of fear, reckoning, and reimagining, her assumptions of what sexual liberation meant were suddenly up for debate. In the thick of personal and political turmoil, Nona turned to the words of history s sexual revolutionaries including her late mother, early radical pro-sex feminist Ellen Willis. At a time when sex has never been more accepted and feminism has never been more mainstream, Nona asked herself: What, exactly, do I want And are my sexual and romantic desires even possible amid the horrors and bribes of patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy Nona s attempt to find the answer places her search for authentic intimacy alongside her family history and other stories stretching back nearly two hundred years. Stories of ambivalent wives and unchill sluts, free lovers and radical lesbians, sensitive men and woke misogynists, women who risk everything for sex who buy sex, reject sex, have bad sex and good sex. The result is a brave, bold, and vulnerable exploration of what sexual freedom can mean. Bad Sex is Nona s own journey to sexual satisfaction and romantic happiness, which not only lays bare the triumphs and flaws of contemporary feminism but also shines a light on universal questions of desire. 336 pp. Englisch.

I have learned that I need to take the good with the bad. The good: I have finally convinced Mrs. Woolgar to open up the collection to the public one day a week so that they too can share in Lady Fowling's passion. The bad: although he would not be my first, or even tenth, choice, at the insistence of the board Charles Henry Dill, Lady Fowling's unscrupulous nephew, is now my personal assistant. On one of our first days open to the public, Mr. John Aubrey shows up at Middlebank House and insists that Lady Georgiana Fowling is his grandmother. Mrs. Woolgar is scandalized by his claims, and Charles Henry, who feels he has been cheated out of his rightful inheritance as Lady Fowling's heir, is furious. I do not know that I believe Mr. Aubrey, yet he has knowledge of Lady Fowling's life and writings that few possess. To further complicate matters, an associate of Mr. Aubrey's intends to help us uncover the truth of John's story. But before he can do that, he is murdered and the police have reason to suspect Charles Henry. As much as I would like to lock up Charles Henry and throw away the key, I cannot believe he is a killer. And I also know there is something dead wrong about Mr. Aubrey's tales regarding his "grandmother" Lady Fowling. I will need to make sense of her past in order to suss out the true villain of this story.

The New York Times Book ReviewThe landmark first novel of one of the greatest living Latin American writers now in a sparkling new translation by his longtime collaboratorWhen it was first published in 2006, then-literary critic and poet Alejandro Zambra s first novel, Bonsai, caused a sensation. It was said, according to Chile s newspaper of record, El Mercurio, that it represented the end of an era, or the beginning of another, in the nation s letters. Zambra would go on to become a writer of international renown, winning prizes in Chile and around the world for his funny, tender, sly fictions. Here, in a brilliant new translation from four-time International Booker Prize nominee Megan McDowell, is the little book that started it all: The story of Julio and Emilia, two Chilean university students who, seeking truth in great literature, find one another instead. As they fall together and drift apart over the course of young adulthood, Zambra spins an emotionally engrossing, expertly distilled, formally inventive tale of love, art, and memory.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - One of the first science-fiction utopian stories and one of the first feminist utopias by India's widely celebrated, pioneering feminist, educator, writer, and activist Rokeya HossainA Penguin Classics EditionSultana, a Muslim woman living in contemporary India, falls asleep and wakes up in a transformed future world: a utopia in which men rather than women are relegated to the domestic sphere. Women, now free to explore the outside world at will and pursue an education, run a peaceful and just society, using scientific principles to harvest energy from the sun and live in harmony with nature. Sultana's Dream was published in 1905 in the Indian Ladies Magazine, the first English language periodical edited by, and targeted at, Indian women. Like the periodical, the story broke new ground. As a pioneering work of science fiction and feminist utopian literature at the turn of the century, Sultana's Dream is strikingly advanced in its critique of patriarchy, war, industrialization, and the exploitation of the natural world, speaking to the concerns of our contemporary world as much as its own. At a time when British colonialism was using the treatment of women in India as justification for colonial intervention there, Hossain's story, in imagining a world in which men rather than women are kept inside, positions her protest against Islamic patriarchy within a larger feminist vision that takes on Western as well as Islamic forms of gender hierarchy. Her novella Padmarag is similarly utopian in its depiction of a women-run school and welfare center, and is both feminist and anti-colonial in its outlook. In both these works, Hossain seizes the critique of gender roles in India away from Western commentators and turns it against British interference, while also enlarging the critique to take on the problem of gender more broadly.
