Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. In the aftermath of the twentieth centurys raging warfare, attempts were made to create an environment in which new relationships between European nations could be built around a common identity. Yet, in the twenty-first century, identity conflicts are gaining a new intensity in parts of the c…ontinent. In the analysis of some sub-state nationalist parties, the prospect of European Union membership reduces the economic and political risks of secession. Meanwhile, to the east, any moves towards expansion of EU membership are viewed by Russia not as a peace project but as acts of aggression. This volume assembles a series of comparative and single-area case studies drawn from different academic disciplines. While interrogating the history of identity conflict in the European context, an essential component of efforts to reduce such conflicts in the future, the authors bring an array of methodological approaches to analyses of the many intersecting political, cultural and economic factors that influence the formation of nationhood and identity, and the resurgence of nationalism. Interrogating the history of identity conflict in the European context, the authors bring an array of methodological approaches to analyses of the many intersecting political, cultural and economic factors that influence the formation of nationhood and identity, and the resurgence of nationalism in Europe in the early 21st Century. Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Catholic schools continue to be a popular choice for parents, including many who do not profess the Catholic faith. One of the distinguishing features of Catholic schools is the importance they ascribe to Religious Education (RE). This volume draws together researchers from Ireland and the UK…to bring into focus the complex range of issues around the teaching of RE. Within the public sphere, there is considerable discussion about the role of education in passing on and engaging with religious matters. The essays gathered here make an important contribution to an ongoing debate about the place of RE in Catholic schools within pluralist societies.Given that almost all Catholic schools are publicly funded, the questions explored in this volume are not only of interest to advocates of Catholic education and those involved in researching and teaching RE, but are also relevant and topical for Irish and British society more widely. This volume draws together researchers from Ireland and the UK in order to bring into focus the complex range of issues around the teaching of Religious Education in Catholic schools within a pluralist society. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Through a series of case studies from Southern and Eastern Africa, Oceania, and Europe, Movement and Connectivity: Configurations of Belonging explores the analytical usefulness of the concept of mobility for anthropological thought and theorization. The book scrutinizes mobility through long-t…erm ethnographies that encompass life histories of individual persons, cyclical household developments, and the evolution of communities and networks. It shows how the social and spatial complexity of mobility increases with time and how socio-political and economic changes affect values, ideas, and practices in local life-worlds.The case studies examines mobility from below and as processes constitutive of society and identity processes through which mobility is perceived and experienced as part of life. How do people see their own local life-world and its (un)connectedness to other societies? To what extent can a mobility approach advance our understanding of the complex relationship between migratory practices, experiences of belonging, and the kinds of movement and connectivity that make and re-make people as well as their societies?Movement and Connectivity: Configurations of Belonging re-questions and re-thinks relationships between space, time, and livelihoods and explores how differently motivated geographical movements may be perceived and lived as part of wider social complexities. Through a series of case studies from Southern and Eastern Africa, Oceania, and Europe, Movement and ConnectivityConfigurations of Belonging explores the analytical usefulness of the concept of mobility for anthropological thought and theorization. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The aim of this work is to respond to the following question: how did Charles S. Peirce find unity for his pragmatist philosophy through the formulation of Scholastic Realism? The author proposes the said doctrine to be a reading guide, leading us through the different stages of Peirces work a…s a philosopher. By understanding his realist doctrine, we can see why he believed it was a viable theory for understanding the problem of Universals. This book demonstrates why, in Peirces mind, such a problem has pervaded the history of philosophy. The authors line of argument reveals that Scholastic Realism is crucial to the understanding of his philosophy, which is a new approach in Peirce scholarship. It provides a useful framework for asking questions about reality in the same way that Peirce himself did. As a result, the author shows that Peirces realism addresses different yet related philosophical problems, leading Peirce to brand the final version of his philosophy as Scientific Metaphysics. The conclusion offers an interpretation of the Scholastic Realism principle as a solution to Peirces concerns a useful idea to achieve a better theory of reality in his struggle to realize metaphysics a posteriori. Peirces doctrine is presented alongside some of its uses, especially in the fields of abstraction theory, and also in the fundamental principles of mathematics. This work should advance our comprehension of the problems related to Peirces philosophy as well as shedding light on pragmatism and its origins as well as the battle between realism and nominalism. The aim of this work is to respond to the following question: how did Charles Sanders Peirce find unity for his pragmatist philosophy through the formulation of Scholastic Realism? The author proposes the said doctrine to be a reading guide, leading us through the different stages of Peirces work as a philosopher. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Research into the analysis of classroom-based writing is replete with techniques and methods meant to bring clarity to the question of how to best conduct instruction and assessment. Findings and suggestions for practice are rooted in a philosophy that asks teachers and linguists to judge stud…ents writing against a pre-determined standard. Too often, the results do little more than inform teachers and researchers as to which students met the standard and which did not. This book offers research into the analysis of classroom writing that does not use a set standard or rubric to assess student writing but instead relies on insights from cognitive linguistics to explore the connections between cognition and language in student writing. The result is a creative and linguistically driven analysis of classroom writing that allows the linguist or teacher to view student writing on its own terms. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Newspapers have long been enthralled by accounts of cute, cuddly, strange, dangerous and endangered beasts, and by extraordinary and sometimes apocryphal narratives of natural phenomena. This study explores the incidence of several such stories in the British press: from reports of the "ethnic…" conflicts between different species of squirrel to the tragedy of Cecil the slaughtered Zimbabwean lion. It takes in, along the way, the celebrity of Knut the polar bear, the Tamworth Two and the Exmoor Emperor. It surveys the media representation of the natural landscape from the crocodile-infested reaches of the River Thames out as far as the bleak wastes of the former planet Pluto. In doing so, and in conversation with reporters and players in these tales, it investigates the political subtexts and social meanings of such stories, and seeks thereby to reveal the real value of such soft, sentimental and sometimes silly news. Newspapers have long been enthralled by accounts of cute, cuddly, strange, dangerous and endangered beasts, and by extraordinary narratives of natural phenomena. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is an issue surrounded by controversy and debate, with important implications for the interconnected roles of the state, the school and the home and for the way we understand ourselves, our sexual identity and our personal relationships. This book charts th…e development of the moral and spiritual narrative in RSE policy in England. In particular, it expounds and critiques the popular moral narrative of informed choice: an approach which advocates providing young people with the maximum amount of information around their sexual choices and defends a view of sexual morality which holds that anything goes, as long as it is in private, between consenting adults and harms no-one else. Alongside a comprehensive critique of this narrative, the book offers a unique contribution to the ongoing development of the moral and spiritual framework of RSE by presenting a Christian vision of a sexually and relationally educated young person. In particular, this enriched vision explores the cultivation of the virtues of Christian love and chastity. The findings presented here are highly significant for anyone concerned with developing and delivering RSE within a robust moral framework. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is an issue surrounded by controversy and debate. This book critiques the popular moral narrative of informed choice and offers an alternative, Christian vision of a sexually and relationally educated young person. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. This volume offers a multidimensional exploration of the theme of time in early modern France: of time past, time present and time future, in literature and in life.In poetry, the importance of past and future perspectives was studied by Maynard and La Fontaine. The dynamics of tragic drama we…re haunted by the past, driven by the urgency of the present and pervasively aware of the alternative futures that could be created, while in imaginative fiction there was a perennial fascination with possible future societies, Utopian or otherwise. The awareness of transience and mortality gave urgency to the right ordering of life. The Church offered guidance to the pious for their days to be passed in disciplined devotion, while the moralists urged their worldly readers to redeem their misspent time and look to things eternal. At the end, the right ordering of death was both a social and a religious preoccupation. The essays gathered here aim to stimulate an imaginative engagement with this important theme and open up avenues for future research. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The figure of the Muslim woman or girl performs a crucial role in far-reaching socio-political debates in Germany. Indeed, such figures challenge the boundaries of gender equality and secularism and contest notions of tolerance and integration. The (in)visibility of Muslim womens bodies and th…eir apparent position in Islam function as ostensible indicators of their oppression and of Islams supposed incompatibility with western values. This book investigates representations of Muslim women and girls in German popular culture from 1990 to 2015. The study analyses the discursive function of such figures in German popular culture via three key research questions: what representational practices surround the figure of the Muslim woman or girl in German life writing, young adult literature and film? How do such representations function to produce non-Muslim subject positions? What is the function of this figure within narratives of feminism and assertions of gender equality? This study understands itself as an intervention into contemporary racist discourses in Germany and operates within a transdisciplinary framework of intersectional feminism and cultural and German studies. Ultimately, the book aims to make visible and interrogatethe underlying hierarchies and agendas that drive representations of Muslim women and girls. This book was the winner of the of the 2017 Early Career Researcher Prize in German Studies, a collaboration between the Institute for German Studies at the University of Birmingham and Peter Lang. The series welcomes proposals for monographs and rigorously edited essay collections focusing on the work of women and LGBTQ+ creators as well as the representation of women, gender and/or sexuality in literature, media and culture from the Middle Ages to the present day. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. This book is the product of a long journey by a company of academics and practitioners sharing a common interest, titled the Spirituality and Music Education Group (SAME). It started at the International Society for Music Education Conference in Bologna in 2008, with its first gathering in Bir…mingham in 2010. This book is a product of the various meetings of this group. Since the group formed, the notion of spirituality has been struggling to find a way through the dominant ideology of secularisation in the West to a place in a post-secularising world. This book concentrates on examining this issue from the position of music educators on three continents. This process can be defined as both separate from as well as part of the dominant Christian and humanist traditions, whatever is appropriate in a particular culture. The book represents a fascinating array of lenses through which to examine the many and complex strands within the concept of spirituality. This volume employs a range of empirical methodologies including eyetracking, direct observation, qualitative research and corpus analysis to describe the use of discourse markers in second language acquisition. The variety of different approaches used by the contributors facilitates the obser…vation of correlations between morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of discourse markers and enriches our understanding of the cognitive behaviour of L2 speakers, both in the understanding and production of texts. Some of the essays examine the acquisitional paths of discourse markers in instructional and natural contexts, with a particular focus on situations of language contact and social integration; others describe experimental studies that analyse the cognitive processing of discourse markers in L2 learners. All the contributions aim to offer new insights which will expand and develop existing theoretical claims about this area of study and open up avenues for further research. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. According to Jim Kitses (1969), the Western originally offered American directors a rich canvas to express a singular authorial vision of the American past and its significance. The Westerns recognizable conventions and symbols, rich filmic heritage, and connections to pulp fiction created a w…idely spoken language for self-expression and supplemented each filmmakers power to express their vision of American society. This volume seeks to re-examine the significance of auteur theory for the Western by analysing the auteur director unbridled by traditional definitions or national contexts. This book renders a complex portrait of the Western auteur by considering the genre in a transnational context. It proposes that narrow views of auteurism should be reconsidered in favour of broader definitions that see meaning created, both intentionally and unintentionally, by a director; by other artistic contributors, including actors and the audience; or through the intersection with other theoretical concepts such as re-allegorization. In so doing, it illuminates the Western as a vehicle for expressing complex ideas of national and transnational identity. The Western has traditionally offered American film directors a rich canvas to express visions of the American past. This volume revisits the Western in a transnational context, exploring the role of auteurism. Stars like Jimmy Stewart and international films like Aferim! and Inglourious Basterds are analysed in this new approach to the genre. Albert Einstein (18791955) is universally known as the father of the theory of relativity; however, he was also one of the most eminent pacifists of the first half of the twentieth century. Through his active, pragmatic and nuanced breed of pacifism, he sought to confront the dilemmas and prob…lems stemming from the unstable political conditions of his time: the beginning of the Great War, the creation and failure of the League of Nations, the emergence of totalitarian regimes, the outbreak of the Second World War, the dawn of the Atomic Age, the escalation of the Cold War, the establishment of the United Nations with its apparent institutional weakness and the need for a world government. His reflections on the subject of peace led him into dialogue with the most prestigious figures of the political and cultural world: from Romain Rolland to Bertrand Russell via Georg Friedrich Nicolai, Sigmund Freud, King Albert I of Belgium, Leo Szilard, Emery Reves and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (amongst others). This dialogue is further emphasized by the books final section, an anthology of Einsteins writings and speeches, which significantly enriches this study. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. "It was a great night for Mexico, as usual." Donald Trump's words about Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu on Oscars' night 2014 were a preview of his now-notorious attitude toward Mexicans: "He's walking away with all the gold? Was it that good? I don't hear that. It was certainly a big night for th…em." Although the future president's comments were offensive, for scholars interested in transnational film and literature, his words were themselves pure gold. For they raise questions about "nation" as a category of representation. When we invoke "Mexican cinema," for example, we imply that some kind of "national cinema" exists - but what is a national cinema? Is the cinema made in the US a national cinema in the same way as that of Mexico's? And is a film made by a foreigner in Mexico part of Mexican cinema? What does it mean for a film or a literary work to cross a border? And are borders to be defined in geographical terms only, or can they also be cast in terms of gender, sexual orientation, race, or language itself? This book, in short, reflects on the implications of the term "transnational" in relation to film and literature conceived - in any way, shape, or form - as "Mexican." When we invoke "Mexican cinema," we imply that some kind of "national cinema" exists - but what is a national cinema? Analyzing what it means for a film or literary work to cross borders, and how such borders are defined, this book reflects on the implications of the term "transnational" in relation to film and literature conceived as "Mexican." Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. With an interview with Derrick de Kerckhove. Symbolism as a parataxis, as a "jazz of the intellect": this is the starting point of this research, inspired by a socio-literary interpretation of Marshall McLuhan's mediology and developed from a diachronic and exegetic perspective. According to t…he Canadian sociologist, the footsteps that led to this electric era can be traced through the study of certain writers and poets, whose symbolism provides a number of sociological hints foreshadowing our media modernity. This book aims to investigate the role of symbolism in McLuhan's sociological research, by outlining how the study of memory and the analysis of literary tradition are fundamental to understanding the complex development of communication and cultural studies. The research presented here focuses on the function of symbols as interpretative keys for the study of media carried out by McLuhan. It is exactly in this artistic movement that the sociologist finds the opportunity to analyse the representative practices (irrational and linear) of modern men, shaped by the reticular patterns of the mind. From this perspective, McLuhan identifies the creative process that lies at the root of symbolist poetry, identified as "a disposition, a parataxis, of components that draws a particular intuition through precise links, but without a point of view, that is a linear connection or sequential order". Symbolism as a parataxis, as a "jazz of the intellect": this is the starting point of this research, inspired by a socio-literary interpretation of McLuhan's mediology and carried out from a diachronic and exegetic perspective. This study traces the development of the art of letter-writing and familiar correspondence and its adaptation by women writers into a remarkabl…e range of literary genres, both fictional and non-fictional. In addition to the better known categories of the monodic love-letter sequence and the polyphonic epistolary novel, these sub-genres include letter miscellanies, essays, travelogues, educational novels and verse epistles. To all these, women writers made a valuable, and sometimes totally original, contribution. Indeed, it could be said that it was essentially through letter-writing that women achieved literary recognition. This volume examines each of these epistolary categories in turn, revealing how women writers from either country excelled in a particular genre: the French, for example, in the epistolary monody and fictional foreign correspondence, the English in the miscellany and verse epistle, and both in the polyphonic letter-novel. Finally, the study notes how, despite the rapid decline of epistolary fiction in the nineteenth century, a select number of letter-novels by American, English and French women writers still continue to be published. Epistolary fiction was in full flower during the period from 1652 to 1802, including the masterworks of Richardson and Laclos. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The Opaque Experience is a thorough investigation of the changes in aesthetics that occurred in Argentina and Brazil during the 1970s and 1980s. It analyses a slow transformation of the status of the literary, which has become increasingly manifest in writing practices against the backdrop of…a wider aesthetic transformation that strongly questioned traditional conventions. Through readings of works by Silviano Santiago, Juan Jose Saer, Clarice Lispector, Nestor Perlongher and Ana Cristina Cesar among others in relation to the works of artists such as Helio Oiticica and Lygia Clark, the book seeks to understand the evolution of the notion of art. Its central argument is that artistic works of the period traverse an experiential drive that transcends artistic form. Special importance is given to historical context: when the frontiers between public and private are demolished by the authoritarian state; when bare life becomes the political category par excellence; and when art positions itself in an expanded field. Exposed to the face of the world, these art forms combine different and destabilizing logics that reveal a vulnerability of the subject, and of experience, that is not in harmony with the notion of autonomous subjects or work. It is not just a matter of a transformation of sensibilities, but rather a transformation of the meaning of art in contemporary society. This study explores the incidence of several such stories in the British press. It investigates the political subtexts and social meanings exchanged in the media landscape.
