Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. New Hardback Book with Dust Jacket. This is the gripping true story of Jesuit Father John Gerard's adventures as a fugitive priest in Elizabethan England. It chronicles both the constant danger and the ingenious heroics of his highly successful struggle to minister to beleaguered and persecuted Catholics who risked imprisonment and heavy fines- sometimes even death- to keep his identity and work secret. To practice one's faith openly was expressly forbidden; to be an active priest was high treason by act of Parliament and meant a trip to the scaffold. The scene shifts with suspenseful pace from Father Gerard's stealthy entry into the country by sea to the teeming streets of London. He disguised himself as a gentleman and went out into the countryside to set up surprisingly effective Catholic networks from great manor houses where expecially built hiding places- priests holes- offered precarious protection from zealous bands of pursuivants. Betrayed at last, he was captured and taken to the Tower and tortured. But he refused to admit his identity or give away names of those who had hidden and helped him, and in a scene which surpasses fiction in impact, makes good his escape. Superbly translated from the Latin, this is one of the most accurate and realistic historical portraits of an incredibly harsh and brutal time, and of a struggle to keep the faith alive against terrible odds. Fr. Gerard's story is one of flight, hiding, torture, capture and cunning. First published in this country in 1952.
