Focusing on the diplomatic record in Iran, Turkey, and Greece, Bruce Kuniholm clarifies the efforts of each of these countries to maintain its independence and territorial integrity against the influence of the Great Powers. He then shows how the traditional struggle for power along the Northern Tier was a major factor in the origins and development of the post~war conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Drawing on a wide variety of secondary sources, government documents, private papers, unpublished memoirs, and extensive interviews with key figures, Professor Kuniholm argues that there was a geographical and conceptual unity to the events in Iran, Turkey, and Greece at the end of World War II. He therefore contends that the United States responded in a rational and tempered way to a genuine Soviet threat to the independence and security of that region. The author suggests that the trouble with the policy of containment was not so much with its inception as with its rationalization, the legacy of that rationalization, and the analogies engendered by the policy's success in the Near East.

Hardcover first edition - First printing. The very scarce hardcover first edition of this poet's first book. Winner of virtually every American prize and honors offered for poetry, including the MacArthur 'genius' award and the Pulitzer prize, Graham is one of the most important poets writing today - her poetry is praised for its crystalline clarity and for its complexity of vision, for its craftsmanship and its lyrical beauty. A title in the Princeton series of Contemporary Poets. 67 pp plus 1 p of notes on the poems. Very near fine in a like dust jacket. A lovely copy of an uncommon work.
