Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), x, [i], 37 pp + plates. Fine. Literature. KHS - X41.

Signed by the Author. Octavo, illus. green cloth, gilt letters, 37 pp + Plates. Fine. From Preface: It is rare for a wobbly vessel to get what he thinks is a safe chance to stick his head into the wide-open Bengal jaws of professional bibliography. The presentation of this bibelot to the round world has some of that activity in it. The outstanding scholars and bibliographers who have labored hard on trying to dientify the first Huck Finn are too well known to the guild, it seems to me, to need naming in the text. The ordinary scholar is spared that extra cargo. If an occaisional reader should get curious about the erratic 1884-1885 manufacture of Huck Finn, he will find the bibliographical chase after it easy, for the published views, however fervid and complex, are neither extensive nor bulky as yet. Books about Books, Bibliography, Samuel Clemens, Mark Twain. KHS.…

Cloth, small 4to, xvi, 168 pp plus plates with 191 ills (6 in colour). From the blurb: "The ways of collectors in this country and the vagaries of the art market are ever fascinating and they have never quite received the attention they deserve. This book contains a study of taste, patronage and collecting over several centuries, linked to the sales held at Christie's since the end of the war. Christie's has been the venue for many important auctions since the middle of the eighteenth century and the records provide an unrivalled source of information for the history of collecting and of taste. Of the 191 illustrations (six of which are in colour) many will be unfamiliar. They offer a panorama of the unusual items that have come under the hammer in one sale room during the post-war period. They not only provide an indication of the state of the market but recall some of the major events which have taken place at auction." With a letter presenting the copy from Christie's tipped onto the front free endpaper. Bookplate on front pastedown endpaper Slight crease to front board, Very Good in a used dustwrapper which has several pieces clipped from edges.…
