From the introduction - "Certes lu présente exposition constitue un peu une gageure: les cent cinquante-neuf pièces dont elle se compose, non seulement prétendent retracer l'évolution de dix siècles d'enlum…inure italienne, mais elles procèdent des seules collections françaises, et principalement de celles du département des Manuscrits de la Bibliothèque Nationale. Les ressources de cet illustre Cabinet sont en ce domaine en effet des plus considérables et les manuscrits italiens, décorés ou peints, qu'il délient, forment un ensemble impressionnant de mille huit cents unités qui ne le cède en nombre (niais non en qualité) qu'à celui des manuscrits français de la même époque. Les richesses de ce trésor italien se trouvent assez heureusement réparties dans le temps et dans l'espace. Ainsi peut-on suivre dans sa continuité et ses cheminements divers l'esthétique du manuscrit et sa pratique 'ultramontaine', depuis ses plus lointaines origines jusqu'au coeur de la Renaissance.
