Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Picasso and Miro revolutionized modern art in the early 20th century. Although trained in Barcelona, it was in Paris where both were consecrated as artists. Having said that, their painting and art have their roots in two unique places in southern Catalonia: Horta de Sant Joan and Mont-Roig del Camp. French photographer Jean Marie Del Moral, son of Spanish exiles during the Civil War, has never ceased to be fascinated by the work and figures of Picasso and Miro. A connoisseur of the places where both geniuses were inspired and worked, he affirms that in Horta and Mont-Roig, Picasso and Miro found nature and popular culture in its primitive state. Del Moral believes that both artists, although they painted differently, shared the same ideas about creation, art, life and nature. Hence, he believes that the roots of their art are alike and that the similarities between the Horta and Mont-Roig landscapes are very revealing. Through his lyrical and intimate photography, Del Moral creates an imaginary dialogue between the landscapes and places that inspired Picasso and Miro. He has a perceptive and poetic gaze, heir to that of the great masters of Catalan photography such as Joaquim Gomis and Francesc Catala Roca and reminding us also of Paul Strand or Edward Weston images. Jean Marie Del Moral discovers a new Picasso and a new Miro, still original and unique but close in essence. SELLING POINTS: . Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. In 1624, Giovanni Battista Braccelli an artist from Florence, Italy created a series of imaginary characters composed of elements like clouds, diamond shaped tiles, chains and kitchen equipment. He gave these the title Bizzarie. Thanks to Covid and the lockdown, Alejandro Magallanes decided to compensate for the lack of social contact by creating fantastical people himself too. What was once called Bizzarie now becomes a search for human contact. An artist seldom knows how the public is going to react to his work. Magallanes gave poet Tedi Lopez Mills space for creation, whereby she gave each of the characters personal attention and wrote her texts on the same page. SELLING POINTS: . A notebook full of characters, each in an unusual shape and with its own personality: a joyful parade of unrestrained individuals. . Alejandro takes us for a quirky, funny, elegantly ruffled and inspiring walk, and I'm delighted that us readers get to tag along. - Cristoph Niemann. . Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. This book, originally published in 1930, is a facsimile edition of the first monograph devoted to the great Mexican illustrator and engraver Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913). It reproduces more than 400 prints from Posada s vast production, collected by Pablo O Higgins from those that could be located and identified at the time. The images of these high-spirited, at times macabre, broadsheets include the famous calaveras, or skeleton caricatures, along with illustrations for songs, corridos (traditional ballads), and religious prayers. With their striking visual qualities, they enriched the tradition of the popular Mexican print. In addition to the images, the book includes an introduction by Frances Toor, the legendary editor of the magazine Mexican Folkways, and an essay by Diego Rivera on Posada. 406 engravings Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Dark, surreal scenes hidden in an iconic photographic archive of Depression-era America. Drawing from approximately 40,000 works of the Farm Security Administration Photographic Archive (193544) housed at the New York Public Library, Omen reviews and reframes this landmark project of modern American documentary photography. The monumental project features works by storied photographers such as Russell Lee, Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn, Walker Evans, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, Gordon Parks and Jack Delano. Many of the more iconic images that arose from this initiative were instrumental in constructing a hegemonic narrative of triumph against adversity in Depression-era America. In scrutinizing the backgrounds and secondary characters of some lesser-known photographs, however, a more turbulent story emerges. Omen is co-edited by Mexican artists Leon Munoz Santini and Jorge Panchoaga, providing a fresh perspective on this quintessentially American study. The image sequence amplifies the eerie details in enlarged, stark black-and-white images, creatively cropped and abutted together to form insidious connections. These hidden stories are premonitions of the visible and invisible specters of systemic injustice that characterize American society, their cycles renewing with each successive generation. Thus, Omen at once serves as a mirror for the anguished reality of today, and as a device for reflection on how historical and documentary photography is read and understood: taking the editorial gaze to its ultimate consequences. The book includes a narrative text by novelist and poet Lucy Ives. AUTHORS: Lucy Ives is an American novelist, poet and critic. Her books include Cosmogony (Soft Skull Press, 2021), Life Is Everywhere (Graywolf Press, 2022) and The Saddest Thing Is That I Have Had to Use Words: A Madeline Gins Reader (Siglio Press, 2020). She is a professor at Brown University. Leon Munoz Santini is a Mexican designer and the publisher of Gato Negro Ediciones. 330 illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Mexican architect and painter Juan O'Gorman (190582) had a spectacular debut as an architect, designing his own house at the age of 24. On the strength of this building, Diego Rivera commissioned O'Gorman to design a pair of studio-houses for himself and Frida Kahlo on contiguous lots, connected by a bridge. But O'Gorman was somewhat forgotten in histories of modern architecture, until the restoration of Rivera's and Kahlo's house in the late 1990s led to a rediscovery of the architect's work and a reappraisal of his place in contemporary Mexican architecture. In 2013 O'Gorman's own first house, which he began designing in 1929 and completed in 1931, was restored. Uncompromisingly radical and rigorously functional, this design reveals O'Gorman as a Mexican pioneer of avant-garde architecture. Casa O'Gorman 1929 tells the story of this unique building and how it was salvaged through beautiful colour photographs. Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. The images of Pablo Lopez Luz are sensitive to the tensions in the urban landscape, expressing the relationship of city dwellers to their environment and, in particular, to those tensions in which the collective memory is encrypted. This is the spirit that informs the artist's photo essay about various buildings in the capital city constructed with volcanic stone, a material that evokes the massive forms of pre-Columbian architecture. The enormous metropolis, frequently shaken by seismic activity, is spread out under the gaze of Popocateptl, over 5,000 meters high, and has itself encroached on the slopes of the Ajusco, a dormant volcano lying to the south. The volcano stone known as tezontlehas been used for centuries as a construction material: the facade of the National Palace, a concretion of Mexico's pre-Columbian, colonial, and modern past, is made of it. 51 images Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
