First edition, deluxe signed limited issue of this lavishly illustrated folio commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the distinguished RAF pilots who fought in it, the most crucial battle in British history. Quarto, original publisher's full crushed blue morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel, inset embroidered RAF brevet to the front panel, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, illustrated with 25 tissue-guarded color silhouette portraits of distinguished RAF pilots each signed by the featured pilot and artist Michael Pierce with his embossed stamp, additionally illustrated with numerous black-and-white and full color photographs. One of a limited edition of 401 numbered copies authenticated and signed by the members of the creative team, this is number 119. Housed in the original custom silk-lined clamshell box with the original prospectus which details the work's production. Preface by Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. So Few and its companion volume So Many raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the RAF Benevolent Fund, a success which led to trade issues by W. H. Smith. In fine condition. The deluxe issue of this work is very uncommon on the market; the first copy was notably presented to Queen Elizabeth II. The first major military campaign fought entirely by air forces, The Battle of Britain, fought between July 10th and October 31st 1940, marked the first major German defeat in the Second World War and a crucial turning point in the conflict. The Battle took its name from the speech given by Prime Minister Winston Churchill to the House of Commons on 18 June: "What General Weygand called the 'Battle of France' is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin." Churchill later summed up the battle with the words, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few". Pilots who fought in the battle have been known as The Few ever since, at times being specially commemorated on 15 September, "Battle of Britain Day". On this day in 1940, the Luftwaffe embarked on their largest bombing attack yet, forcing the engagement of the entirety of the RAF in defense of London and the South East, which resulted in a decisive British victory that proved to mark a turning point in Britain's favor.

First edition, number 396 of 401 copies, signed by all six members of the creative team on the mounted authentication leaf. A magnificent tribute, containing 25 superb original silhouette portraits of distinguished RAF pilots from Britain and the Commonwealth, all signed by the sitter and the artist, Michael Pierce, together with his embossed stamp. Each portrait is accompanied by a biography of the subject, together with photographs of memorabilia and facsimiles of letters. The prospectus details the meticulous attention to detail during production: 500 sets of sheets were printed, with the best 401 hand-chosen and the rest pulped. The editor was noted historian of aviation Bill Gunston, who compiled the biographies in collaboration with former RAF pilot John Golley. Prince Edward contributes the preface. So Few, and its 1995 successor on Bomber Command, So Many, raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the RAF Benevolent Fund, a success which led to trade issues by W. H. Smith. This deluxe issue is uncommon on the market today. The first copy was presented to Queen Elizabeth II. The list of contributors names several charitable organisations and other members of the Royal Family for whom copies would likely have been reserved. Folio. Original blue crushed morocco over bevelled boards, raised bands to spines within gilt rules, titles to second compartments gilt, front cover lettered in gilt, with inset embroidered RAF brevet and gilt decoration, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, bound blue silk page-makers. Housed in the original moiré silk-lined blue cloth solander box. With 25 coloured silhouettes on card leaves, tipped in as issued, signed by the subject and artist, artist's embossed stamp, tissue-guards, numerous photographs (colour and black-and-white) and facsimiles to the text. An excellent copy.

First editions, deluxe signed issues, both volumes number 5 of 401 copies, each containing 25 superb colour silhouette portraits of distinguished RAF pilots from Britain and the Commonwealth, all signed by both the pilot and artist Michael Pierce, and with his embossed stamp. This set handsomely presented in the rare mahogany display cabinet and with a fine provenance. Although unmarked as such this set is from the library of Air Vice Marshal Freddie Hurrell (1928-2008), one of the creative team; he is pictured and named on the original prospectus, present here with each volume. Hurrell had been Director General of RAF Medical Services (1986-8) and upon retirement in 1988, after 35 years' service with the RAF, became Director of Appeals for the RAF Benevolent Fund. This set has never appeared on the open market. Although the cabinet is mentioned in the prospectus, relatively few appear to have been produced; we have traced just one other on auction records, going through the rooms in 2011. In addition, we have not handled a copy of So Few in the half morocco solander box, as here. These superbly produced books are printed on thick paper and finely bound, each portrait accompanied by a biography of the subject, together with photographs of memorabilia and facsimiles of letters. The prospectuses detail the meticulous attention to detail during production: for each volume 500 sets of sheets were printed, with the best 401 hand-chosen and the rest pulped. The editor was noted historian of aviation Bill Gunston, who compiled the biographies in collaboration with John Golley. Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, contributes the prefaces. So Few and So Many raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the RAF Benevolent Fund, a success which led to trade issues by W. H. Smith. These deluxe issues are uncommon on the market today. The first copy of both volumes was presented to Queen Elizabeth II. The list of contributors names several charitable organisations and other members of the Royal Family for whom copies would likely have been reserved. Additionally signed in the edition by the core members of the creative and design team, including Freddie Hurrell. A lavish and worthy tribute to Britain's Second World War airmen. Two works, folio. Original blue crushed morocco over bevelled boards, raised bands to spines within gilt rules, titles to second compartments gilt, front covers lettered in gilt, that of So Few with inset embroidered RAF brevet and gilt decoration, So Many with inset bronze bas relief pilot bust by James Butler RA, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, bound blue silk page-makers. So Few housed in original blue half morocco solander box; So Many in original blue cloth solander box, both moiré silk-lined. Accompanied by original glazed mahogany cabinet lined with pale blue moiré silk (570 x 710 x 108 mm). Original prospectuses included. With 50 coloured silhouettes on card leaves, tipped in as issued, signed by the subject and artist, artist's embossed stamp, tissue-guards, numerous photographs (colour and black-and-white) and facsimiles to the text. Slight scuff at foot of front of box for So Many. A fine set.
