Fine in fine dust jacket, not price clipped, with protective mylar cover. Publishers sheet laid in. At the start of Thornton's fourth intricate puzzle to feature Chloe Newcombe, the Cochise County, Arizona victim's advocate is assigned to assist artist Heather Stephens after Heather's husband, carpenter Terry Barnett, is found dead in his burning barn. The problem is, Chloe hired Terry to make a bookcase for her and in the process was attracted to him. During dinner across the border in Mexico, Terry told her he was married, and she refused to see him again. Chloe's concern for Heather, when it becomes clear that Terry was shot first, drives her to try to unravel some highly tangled relationships in search of the killer. Did his wife tire of his infidelities? Was there a dissatisfied client? What of his estranged brother in Ohio? Terry went back there for a time to care for his dying mother and contacted a childhood friend. Herself a victim's advocate, Thornton writes what she knows. She takes great care in describing this community whose members are bound together in spite of their need for independence." --PW. Book.

And he'd better not: while Peralta lies comatose in the hospital, the powers-that-be appoint Mapstone acting Sheriff in his place. Mapstone feels unqualified, but he's the only person who's temporary appointment won't infuriate all the other candidates who want the Sheriff's position permanently. As Mapstone discovers, the past has deadly consequences. The mean streets of the New West have never been more sinister. Book.

Hard Cover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Edition, November 2002 with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket, not price clipped, with protective mylar cover. Victim Advocate or Victim Witness? Chloe Newcomb defines her job in the County Attorney's office as "helping victims of violent crimes through the criminal justice system in any way I can." Actually, there's much more to that than meets the eye. The description of "victim" stretches to include not only the muggee or even the murderee. In Chloe's past experience the people she is assigned to help in "whatever way that she can" includes those affected by a disaster, even an innocent bystander who has witnessed the event. And since she moved to the small desert town of Dudley, Arizona, she learned very well that disasters aren't limited to the cities. Chloe's current assignment is to notify the family of a local judge, who has disappeared, and whose body is subsequently found at the ruins of a deserted hotel in a ghost town near Dudley. She finds the family to be a living illustration of the description "dysfunctional." The widow seems to have been on the verge of collapse before her husband disappeared, her live-in mother is an evil-tongued shrew, losing no opportunity to worsen the atmosphere. The couple's daughter, away at college, has cut off all communication with her family (something Chloe can hardly blame her for), and the pre-teen son is a bewildered, angry child. A victim advocate doesn't seem to be what this bereaved family needs. However, Chloe feels she can stretch the definition somewhat and see what she can do to solve the mystery of the judge's murder --not only who killed him and why, but why in such strange circumstances? She has her own reasons as well - her friend Nate, a young journalist has disappeared from Dudley after telling Chloe that he had uncovered some information about the judge that would "blow this town apart." Now she fears for his life. Meanwhile, she is beginning to feel that she needs a victim advocate herself, because not only Nate, but her lover Craig has vanished. The county police are investigating the judge's death; it's Chloe's job to be her own victim's advocate, seek out the late judge's estranged daughter, and more important, locate lover Craig and friend Nate, both of whom, she learns have secrets of their own. Book.

Hard Cover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Edition. 1st US edition, December 2001, so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket, not price clipped, in protective mylar cover. Excellent debut crime story by a new young Sottish writer, introducing Chief Inspector Jacobson and Detective Sergeant Kerr. " Twists in plot wait for the reader around every corner, while the cold rain and wind of a Scottish November penetrate this debut procedural that compares favorably with the work of the popular author of tartan noir, Ian Rankin. When Dr. Roger Harvey, a well-liked and respected history lecturer at Crowby College, is found dead in his home, Det. Chief Inspector Frank Jacobson and Det. Sergeant Ian Kerr and their team have little to go on. As they interview friends, associates and neighbors, they are led from a refuge house for battered women and the environs of Crowby to Amsterdam and the Lake District, and from Harvey's romantic entanglements to major software theft and a New Age cult, before the pieces come together in a surprising conclusion. McDowall expertly manages a complicated plot and has created realistic, albeit troubled characters: Jacobson struggles with feelings of inferiority and battles his vices unlike Rankin's Det. John Rebus, who has resigned himself to his; Kerr's marriage is on the rocks; and the suspects themselves are revealed to lead lives of desperation. No Gothic spires dispel the gloom of the concrete Crowby College, telephone and electrical wires obscure the views of the surrounding mountains, the tea is often cold and the coffee, awful. Dispelling old myths and fantasies, McDowall depicts Scotland as it is in the 21st century and has created a compelling, fast-moving story that leaves the reader wondering where he will go from here." -- PUBLISHERS WEEKLY. ".The inexplicable murder of Member of Parliament Gerald Culver mystifies the small resort village of Amblesea, England, and stuns Annie Maddox, proprietress of the Wellington Hotel, as she listens to the news in shocked disbelief. But the murder completely baffles Harry Lambert, ex-policeman and reluctant private eye. He enters a world that whirls with suspicion and fear against the opposing backdrops of a plush and luxurious conference center and the bleak and weather-torn boardwalk. Three grisly murders later, Lambert deduces that Annie is the only link between all four murders. But the more evidence he finds implicating her, the more convinced he is of her innocence, and the more he is drawn to her."
