Hardcover. 12mo., (6 4/8 x 4 2/8 inches). Title-page and text leaves printed in blue and black. Engraved frontispiece, folding engraved map of the Isle of Mann with original hand-colour in outline (early repairs to verso, lightly soiled and a bit creased), 16 engraved plates of local landmarks, and numerous engravings in the text (some light spotting). Original blue cloth, gilt (head and foot of the spine worn with minor loss). Fourth edition, first published in 1847. The Isle of Mann's "existence and locality must have been well known to the inhabitants of the surrounding coasts, long before it was invaded; and the original families who landed on its shores were allowed to enjoy their seclusion and their name without molestation. That name, cherished by uninterrupted tradition to the present day, was "Ellan Vannin;" the letter M being changed into V, according to the idiom of the Manks language, which thus forms the possessive case. The same authority informs us that the original founder and legislator of the Island was Mannan Mac Ler, and that this name was given to the Island, being contracted into Mannin, and in later years into Mann" (page 3). Catalogued by Kate Hunter.

In den Warenkorb14cm. two Leporello strips, map, 12pp text. Original decorated blindstamped maroon grained-cloth gilt. Lettering to foot of first strip map cropped. The Manx Notebook states: This dates from c.1875 and is a strip map of the route of the "Long route Douglas to Ramsey" which had become a tourist attraction involving a day long circular trip by horse drawn charabanc from Douglas - Ballacraine - Kirk Michael - Ramsey - Laxey - Douglas. It comprises two Leporello strips, a small map and a textual description of the routes and some of the attractions. The main strip map, which would be the main selling point, is printed on good quality glossy china thin card , the other sections on poor quality paper. It is probable that the main strip was printed in Saxony as the paper and images are very similar to those known to be of German origin but the considerably inferior other strip and text were printed locally. Samuel Webb came to Douglas in 1858. Webb's Public Lounge was established in Strand Street. Not in Cubbon or DISCOVER.
