Improvement in cotton fiber through biotechniques. 14. Fiber quality of transgenic cotton. Index. This book will emphasize the physiological and biochemical functions of the plants. Despite its inherent potential growth habit cotton is managed as an annual crop plant. Continued vegetative growth after flowering diverts the plant's energy away from lint and seed production so the perennial nature of even modern cultivars opposes current production system. It is important to recognize that physiological function depend on structures whether the process is gas exchange (respiration) in the leaf water conduction in xylem or photosynthesis in the chloroplasts. Moreover cotton plant produces fruits on two different types of branches each unique in growth habit which complicates crop management. Thus understanding various physiological processes of the cotton plant helps to grow a high yielding high quality crop. A total of 14 chapters dealing with important physiological aspects necessary for efficient cotton production systems are compiled in this book. A list of various physiological terms is given along with morphological features of the crop. The physiological mechanisms related to development and crop maturity are described. The processes of photosynthesis respiration and water relations are explained along with recent research findings. Role of macronutrients and micronutrients their requirement for various processes and deficiency symptoms have been included. The abiotic factors viz. temperature water CO2 and light affecting yield have been discussed. The book also includes chapters on physiology of cotton fiber development and its biochemical components. In recent years several biotechnique have been used for producing hi tech cotton. A concise information of various techniques used to improve quantity as well as quality of fiber and their use for production of disease and herbicide resistant cotton genotypes has been compiled. 316 pp.

From the preface This book was originally intended as a text for students and its primary purpose has not changed it has however been increasingly used by practising farmers and in order that it may serve their needs also the authors have been at pains to avoid the use without explanation of such scientific terms as have not yet become part of our farming vocabulary. A great part of the book has been rewritten and much new material has been added. The pace of progress in farm science and technology is now such that any sizable book must inevitably be out of date in some respect before it leaves the press. In the present case the most important failing is with respect to various noteworthy developments in the field of farm chemicals (weed killers insecticides etc.) which occurred in the few months preceding publication. 278 pp.

From time unknown Indian medicinal plants have been used to cure and prevent ailments. The pharmacological values of many of these plants have been confirmed by scientific findings. Medicinal and Aromatic plants are rich sources of secondary metabolites like alkaloids glycosides steroids flavoinoids saponins etc which are potential sources of modern herbal drugs. It is possible that the efficiency of herbs depend on the total cumulative effect of the plant contents rather than on the one or few chemical fractions separated from the herbs. The authentic information regarding use of medicinal plants active ingredients pharmacological properties and dosage etc are not available at one place. An efforts thus has been made by us to compile the systematic and proven information in the form of a book. This book in particular caters to the need of all those who are trying to decide whether to use herbs as a form of treatment or an adjunctive treatment or as health promoter or simply as a prophylactic measure for disease prevention and immunity building. 218 pp.

Exploitation of fossil fuel a sector of energy resources has been increasing day by day due to mechanized life and it has threatened not only the environmental hazard but also it has opened eyes for exploration of alternate source of fuel growing as our food feed fibres and fire woods are grown by farmers. Since country has huge waste land and manpower so production of non edible oil through plantation of Jatropha and its transformation into bio diesel is one of the best option as production of edible oil in cultivated land is insufficient to meet the requirement of present population. Countries like Germany France and Italy are confidentially depending on bio diesel but from edible oil produced by rapeseed and sunflower. Few countries are moving towards Jatropha cultivation however neither a suitable variety nor its standardized agro technology is so far available. Keeping in view this book is compiled based on literature personal communication experiments papers and presentation etc. This book is lucidly written and contains 37 chapters 33 tables and 56 figures for better understanding of readers. 140 pp.

The applications of geospatial technologies are playing an ever increasing role in conservation and natural resources management. Advances in the science and technology behind remote sensing are making it more practical to conduct large scale inventories and provide monitoring and evaluation of natural resources. Coupled with recent advances in GIS and spatial decision support systems geospatial technology is taking resource conservation planning and management to a new level. Applied geospatial technology covers the fundamentals of techniques for acquiring processing classifying visualizing and analyzing spatial referenced data of the earth and their application to study of the earth's surface features. Included are techniques such as land survey photogrammetry global positioning systems (GPS) airborne and satellite remote sensing digital image processing GIS and geovisualisation. In 2004 the US Department of Labour identified geotechnology as one of the three most important emerging and evolving fields along with nanotechnology and biotechnology. Keeping this in mind an attempt has been made in this book to analyze the various facets of geospatial technology. 298 pp.

From the preface Outstanding work has been done in forestry research in India in the past now a history of more than a century. However current knowledge and pattern of research will not result sufficiently in accurate predictions of the consequences of potentially harmful influences in managing the forest that lack a sound basis in biological knowledge. The deficiency will reduce our ability to maintain or enhance forest productivity recreation and conservation as well as our ability to ameliorate or adapt to changes in the global environment. A new research paradigm will have to be adopted an environmental paradigm. This will require forestry research to increase the breadth of research areas covered and the depth to which they are investigated. Many informations on the development of research analysis in forest sciences are scattered into the literature and number of methods are available for research analysis of plants water and soils. But the analyst is confronted by some problems. The first problem is to select a procedure which will properly evaluate the related parameter. The second problem is to discover appropriate contents which are present in the experimental samples one is attempting to analyses. The third problem is to find the most specific methods appropriate to the required analysis. This manual will serve to further the cause of forestry in general and forestry research in particular. 342 pp.

This book is being published for those who are interested in growing processing and trading of medicinal plants as herbal drugs. The importance of medicinal plants in India has been increasingly recognized by agriculturalists and pharmaceuticals during past two decades. During the past decade demand for medicinal plants and its products has attracted the worldwide interest India being the treasure house of biodiversity accounts for 8000 species which are used in 10 000 herbal drugs. Ninety percent of herbal industry's requirement of raw material is taken out from the forests resulting in to the ruthless exploitation and destruction of its natural habitats. Thus to take pressure off from natural forest the medicinal plants have been brought under cultivation to enhance their conservation. Cultivation o.

Its economic importance has further increased and likely to zoom in coming years. The population growth urbanization change in dietary preferences and increased income have driven the demand for foods of animal origin. Feed and fodder supply still remains the most critical impediment in the growth of livestock industry in the country. Overall deficiency in feed supply remains around 50 per cent. The current production of compound feed from the feed manufacturing sector is only to the tune of 10 million tones per year against a conservative demand of 40 million tones. In present scenario it appears imperative to give a immediate fillip to the feed production. The editors in the present book have contemplated the available informations contributed by learned experts in their field. The book cover the topics like cereal availability processing gelatinization extrusion technology codex alimentarius protection of fats and proteins urea molasses mineral block technology antrinutri nutional factors processing for pig feeding liquid feed handing storage losses mineral mixture preparation agro industrial by products feed microscopy probiotics herbal feed additives etc. It is expected that the book will be equally useful to research scientist in engineering animal nutrition students and feed manufacturing industries alike. 347 pp.

Cell biology is an integrated discipline including material from the field of cytology cytogenetics physiology biochemistry biophysics and microbiology. The intellectual challenge involved in the study of cells has also attracted scientists from the physical sciences and the field today constitutes a frontier of biological knowledge. All attempts have been made in the present work to provide an integrated approach covering cell structure and molecular biology. If one visualizes the cell as an organised collection of interacting molecules the emphasis given to molecular structure in certain chapters will be understandable. The genetics portion covers almost all the necessary chapters required in very simple and precise manner. Besides chapters of genetics chapters of bacterial genetic human genetics and genetic engineering are also incorporated. Some of the views put forward may appear to be overs implications but there seemed to be no other option other than including space consuming discussions conveying the various pros and cons. Similar restrictions on space did not permit the inclusion so a detailed bibliography of all the work cited in the text. It is expected that the present book with updated information will be useful to the readers. 706 pp.
