Paperback. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. Very Good in Wraps: shows indications of careful use: slight spine lean; a touch of wear to the extremities; former owner's name at the front endpaper; binding secure; text clean. No longer pristine, but remains clean, sturdy, and quite presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 232pp. Trade Paperback. In Water from the Well, six short stories coil together, nestled in the spiral of a century of Southern history. On one level these could be the stories of any small town: the bit characters are universal-gossip mongers who know (or think they know) just about everything about each other. But on another level, these characters are uniquely Arkansan and their struggles pinned in place and time to the three generations who inherited the chaos and eventual resettling of the post-slavery era. "Red Sky at Night," is the story of a baseball game between the white men of Sugars Springs and the black men of Bethel. This story, set in 1905 serves as an introduction both to the characters and the tensions of the novel. "Red Sky at Dawn" is set a year later, and introduces the element of chaos in the form of a tornado that hits the town without warning. "Ransom Passing" explores the personal history of one ex-slave and then moves forward in time to his grandson's life. "Baby, Leaving," and "The Choosing of Little Jewel" demonstrate gender tensions among families of both races. Finally, "The Salvation of Cora Emery McRae" highlights religion's role in the South. Although the language is unmistakably Arkansan, Myra McLarey's voice is more fluid than the traditional women writers of the South. Think Alice Hoffman rather than Eudora Welty or Flannery O'Connor. While the depth of the characters and the vividly-painted context make this book a worthwhile read, it is the lyrical prose which makes it unforgettable. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated.

Paperback. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of wear to extremities; mildest rubbing. Binding square and secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 247pp. Translated by Peter Petro. Foreward by Vaclav Havel. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. Trade Paperback. This book is about a young man, Milan, in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia during the 1980's. His father is imprisoned as a dissident, Milan is a non-conformist and the Communist state is not his friend. Milan is in turns a hospital orderly and a hardware store clerk, when he is working. The story is intensely personal involving the reader in Milan's thoughts and feelings as he is confronted by the shocks of his eventful life. The story provides insight into the dreary and oppressive life during that period, but more importantly the author is able to make the reader feel the impact of the sometimes ordinary, sometimes traumatic events Milan experiences, and to make his discoveries, joys and anguish our own. It is philosophical as the main character tries at all turns to extract meaning and personal guidance from what he witnesses. It is also very much a love story and shows the great awe and mystery he finds in his girlfriend, Tania, and other women. This is not always pleasant to read but is gripping in the way that it unfolds his hazardous life without disclosing where it is going, if indeed it is going anywhere. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated.

Paperback. First Edition Thus (1995), First Printing indicated by a complete numerical sequence. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of wear to the upper corner of the front panel, which also shows a faint crease; the mildest rubbing to the panels, the white background field of which shows a hint of soiling. The binding leans ever so slightly, but remains perfectly secure; ther text is clean. Free of creases to the backstrip. Free of any creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome nearly-new copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing the very mildest wear and minor, unobtrusive flaws. Close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8 x 5.25 x 0.5 inches). 225 pages. Language: English. Weight: 9 ounces. Trade Paperback. First Edition Thus (1995), First Printing indicated by a complete numerical sequence.
