Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. KENTUCKY AUTHOR JOHN FOX JR. 2 IN ONE KENTUCKIAN & A KNIGHT OF THE CUMBERLAND. Here is a book with two novels by Kentuckian John Fox Jr. who was a war correspondent during the Spanish-American War, and a friend and contemporary of Teddy Roosevelt and some of other adventure prone individuals of the time. He reinvented himself as a raconteur, telling tales of the Kentucky and the land in which he was raised, even accompanying his story telling with backwoods ballads. I am pleased to offer a nice book, published by Scribner s (for whom he worked for a period as a war correspondent before these were published) that includes the two novels: The Kentuckians, and A Knight of the Cumberland. This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ½ inches, 259 pages total) is bound in khaki green with an embossed gilt flower medallion on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. The books were illustrated by W.T. Smedley and F.C. Yohn and published by Charles Scribner s Sons of New York in 1912. The top edge is gilt and this book belongs on the bookshelf of someone who loves the history and folklore of the great state of Kentucky! Condition: This book is in very good condition and that is one of the reasons which prompted me to offer it, and at a very reasonable price. There is some edge wear to the hard covers, nothing significant. The spine is faded a bit but the titles still clear and attractive. There is an inked former owner s name on the front endpaper but that is the only mark I found in the book. The pages and plates (of which there are 8, including a well-preserved tissue protected frontispiece) are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact although the binding is lightly cracked at the half-title but the binding still seems tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…

The stories of six "real soldiers of fortune", including Winston Churchill, Baron James Harden-Hickey, Major Burnham, and General William Walker. These were days of American and English colonization and how they fought for their country as well as any country that would hire them. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Richard Harding Davis, (born April 18, 1864, Philadelphia, Pa., U.S. - died April 11, 1916, Mount Kisco, N.Y., U.S.), U.S. author of romantic novels and short stories and the best known reporter of his generation. He then worked on various newspapers in Philadelphia and New York, wrote short stories, and in 1890 became managing editor of Harper's Weekly. On Harper's assignments he toured various parts of the globe, recording his impressions of the American West, Europe, and South America in a series of books (1892 - 96). He was a war correspondent, reporting every war from the Greco-Turkish to World War I. He plunged into what he reported, defying rules in order to join in the battle of San Juan Hill in the Spanish - American War; he was nearly shot by the Germans as a spy in World War I. His early fiction achieved immediate success, particularly Gallegher and Other Stories (1891), a collection of newspaper stories, Van Bibber and Others (1892), and Ranson's Folly (1902). Many of his published works were illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson. He wrote seven popular novels published between 1897 and 1909. Several of his 25 plays were also very successful, notably Ranson's Folly (1904), The Dictator (1904), and Miss Civilization (1906). …

Hard Cover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. Reprint. Reprint. An excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1911 Hard Cover. 309 pp. Illustrated by George Gibbs. "Four Americans make a solemn pact to combat tyranny and save human lives. Thus begins the Secret Order of the White Mice. Roddy Forrester's father owns the Forrester Construction Company, a big concern which builds lighthouses. To give his son a taste of business, he sends him to Venezuela as a foreman. But he doesn't want Roddy to know too much about company policy-least of all its political intrigues. Once there Roddy finds Don Miguel Rojas, a patriot unfairly put in prison. It's unlikely that anyone will bust him out, until White Mouse Roddy hears about his plight and decides to do something."--Bookseller's website. Hard Cover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. Reprint. Reprint. An excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1911 Hard Cover. 215 pp. Illustrated. ABOUT VERA, THE MEDIUM: INTRODUCTION The early Chinese believed that jade had an immortality of its own and was impervious to decay. For them there was no substance nobler, purer, more durable, more pre-eminently suitable for the fashioning of religious emblems and the embodiment of dogma. Round jade, as round a kernel, the whole body of early Chinese civilisation crystallised. And yet they were not the first discoverers or users of jade, for the Babylonians made seal cylinders of jade, and Professor Elliott Smith believes that the Turkestan jade mountains and rivers were first worked by miners from Mesopotamia who, passing on legends about the magical qualities of jade, infected the Chinese with their beliefs. ABOUT MISS CIVILIZATION: Miss Civilization, a one act comedy, tells the story of a young woman who matches wits with three burglars attempting to rob her house. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Richard Harding Davis, (born April 18, 1864, Philadelphia, Pa., U.S. - died April 11, 1916, Mount Kisco, N.Y., U.S.), U.S. author of romantic novels and short stories and the best known reporter of his generation. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Richard Harding Davis, (born April 18, 1864, Philadelphia, Pa., U.S. - died April 11, 1916, Mount Kisco, N.Y., U.S.), U.S. author of romantic novels and short stories and the best known reporter of his generation. Many of his published works were illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson. He wrote seven popular novels published between 1897 and 1909. Several of his 25 plays were also very successful, notably Ranson's Folly (1904), The Dictator (1904), and Miss Civilization (1906).…
