Neuware - In diamond alluvial deposits, the information about the spatial distribution of stone size is of crucial importance for the quantitative characterisation of the different areas of the deposit. In fact, the value of the diamond reserves depends strongly on the distribution of stone sizes: between two… areas with the same grade, the most valuable is the one with larger stones. The geological genesis of the mineralization, related with the transport and deposition of stones in trapsites, can create separated spatial areas, corresponding to different stone size. To characterise these distinct areas, the non smooth transitions between them should be accounted for, in the estimation of internal properties. An extended version of zonal control of geostatistical estimation (Soares et ai, 1995) proposed in this paper, aims to characterising the classes of size histogram for each geological unit, avoiding the smooth effect. For this purpose the morphology of each geological unit is obtained by using two distinct criteria: i) first, the points of each unit are classified according to the local and global probabilities of belonging to each unit (Soares, 1992); ii) in a second classification, the optimization technique of Simulated Annealing is used to rearrange the pre-classified points in order to impose, in the final morphological maps, the spatial variability of experimental samples (Goovaerts, 1994). A case study of a diamond alluvial deposit with two geological units with distinct stone size histograms is presented.

At IM'97 the two worlds of computer networks and telecommunications systems came to gether, each proposing a view to management that stems from their own paradigms. Each world made clear the need for end-to-end management and, therefore, each one stepped into the oth er's field. We feel that there is no winner but a mutual enrichment. The time is ripe for integra tion and it is likely that the next Conference will bear its fruit.

This meeting gave an opportunity to world experts on this subject to gather in Athens, in order to discuss the cur rent exploitation and the impending opportunities that exist in the area of multi-object spectroscopy, with particular emphasis on: 1. Astronomical instruments, data acquisition, processing and analysis techniques. 2. Astrophysical problems best tackled through wide-field, multi-object spectroscopy. The new fibre optic technology offers an important tool for the advancement of basic research and the development of industrial applications. Astronom ical spectroscopy is a field of astronomy which has contributed much to the advancement of fundamental physics. The spectra of hot stars have been used to determine the well-known Balmer formula for the wavelength of hydrogen lines, in the late 19th century. Since then, spectroscopy has made enormous progress in stellar atmosphere studies, in kinematics, and in the detection of high redshifts in the Universe. The traditional techniques of obtaining wide-field spectroscopic data are based on slitless spectroscopy (objective prism). The IACR organizes two serie…s of international conferences each year, the EUROCRYPT meeting in Europe and CRWTO in the United States. The history of EUROCRYFT started 15 years ago in Germany with the Burg Feuerstein Workshop (see Springer LNCS 149 for the proceedings). It was due to Thomas Beth's initiative and hard work that the 76 participants from 14 countries gathered in Burg Feuerstein for the first open meeting in Europe devoted to modem cryptography. I am proud to have been one of the participants and still fondly remember my first encounters with some of the celebrities in cryptography. Since those early days the conference has been held in a different location in Europe each year (Udine, Paris, Linz, Linkoping, Amsterdam, Davos, Houthalen, Aarhus, Brighton, Balantonfiired, Lofthus, Perugia, Saint-Malo, Saragossa) and it has enjoyed a steady growth, Since the second conference (Udine, 1983) the IACR has been involved, since the Paris meeting in 1984, the name EUROCRYPT has been used. For its 15th anniversary, EUROCRYPT finally returned to Germany. The scientific program for EUROCRYPT '97 was put together by a 18-member program committee whch considered 104 high-quality submissions. These proceedings contain the revised versions of the 34 papers that were accepted for presentation. I freely admit that though the reading of some sections would benefit from previous experience of certain topics in… physics - particularly relativity and electromagnetism - generally the mathematics is not sophisticated. In fact, the mathematically sophisticated reader, may well find that in many places, the rather deliberate progress too slow for their liking. This text had its origin in a 90-minute lecture on complex numbers given by the author to prospective university students in 1994. In my attempt to develop a novel approach to the subject matter I looked at complex numbers from an entirely geometric perspective and, no doubt in line with innumerable other mathematicians, re-traced steps first taken by Hamilton and others in the early years of the nineteenth century. I even enquired into the possibility of using an alternative multiplication rule for complex numbers (in which argzlz2 = argzl- argz2) other than the one which is normally accepted (argzlz2 = argzl + argz2). For this, Aristotelian syllogistic does not suffice: We require relational reasoning. George Boole, in his Mathematical Analysis of Logic of 1847, initiated the treatment of logic as part of mathematics, specifically as part of algebra. Quite the opposite conviction was put forward early this century by Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead in their Principia Mathematica (1910 - 1913): that mathematics was essentially grounded in logic. Logic thus developed in two streams. On the one hand algebraic logic, in which the calculus of relations played a particularly prominent part, was taken up from Boole by Charles Sanders Peirce, who wished to do for the 'calculus of relatives' what Boole had done for the calculus of sets. Peirce's work was in turn taken up by Schroder in his Algebra und Logik der Relative of 1895 (the third part of a massive work on the algebra of logic). Schroder's work, however, lay dormant for more than 40 years, until revived by Alfred Tarski in his seminal paper 'On the calculus of binary relations' of 1941 (actually his presidential address to the Association for Symbolic Logic). 292 pp. Englisch.
