Medieval, Renaissance and industrial age planning and urban design gave Belgium many examples of architectural masterpie…ces especially in the city centers. During the post World War II period, Belgian planners and politicians legislated national planning laws that divided the country into 48 planning regions (also called sub-regions and sectors) and empowered the municipalities (communes) with potent legal instruments to direct land development in accordance with their plans. Preparation, amendment and execution of these plans in a democratic society with a strong laissezJaire tradition have been painstaking, but nonethe less, significant tangible results have been achieved. The purpose of this book is to explore and assess the successes and failure of Belgian planning and make this record available in English so that they may remain facets of Belgian planning. The general socio-economic and historical background is provided with a view to understanding the theoretical, legal, physical and selected topical aspects of Belgian planning. In doing so a multi-disciplinary approach has been taken and the authors have been selected from a variety of disciplines. Professor Louis Albrechts of the University of Leuven is a planning theorist. Ms. Brigitte Beernaert and Mr. Karel Vroom are practicing planners. Beernaert is also a planning historian. The aim of the workshop was to evaluate current methods of code generation a…nd to indicate the main directions which future research is likely to take. It provided an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas and had the added advantage of bringing together European and American experts who were unlikely to meet at less specialised gatherings. This volume contains 14 of the 30 papers presented at the Dagstuhl workshop. The papers deal mainly with the following four topics: tools and techniques for code generation, code generation for parallel architectures, register allocation and phase ordering problems, and formal methods and validations. Most of the papers assess the progress of on-going research work, much of which is published here for the first time, while others provide a review of recently completed projects. The volume also contains summaries of two discussion groups which looked at code generation tools and parallel architectures. As a direct result of one of these discussions, a group of the participants have collaborated to make a pure BURS system available for public distribution. This system, named BURG, is currently being beta-tested. In choosing papers, the Program Co…mmittee of the conference gave priority to studies in rapidly emerging areas of the growth and preparation of crystalS and crystalline films. These examine problems applicable to various crystallization media: instability of the crystallization front (for a more general case than before and for a comparatively complicated system, a solution), adsorption and migration of atoms and molecules (the analysis is made on a quantum-chemical level), and the kinetics of step and dislocation growth in the presence of surface anisotropy as well as impurity adsorption (several earlier known methods are summarized). The papers presented during the Symposium by some of Professor Boley's former students and colleagues cover those areas of applied mechanics where most of his contributions have been made over the years. These papers have been written in tribute to Professor Boley's distinguished scientific career and out of genuine affection and respect for him. The present volume consists of those Symposium papers that belong to the areas of Dynamics and Stability and constitute recent advances in the field. A special issue of the Journal of Thermal Stresses has been reserved for publication of the Symposium papers on Thermal Stresses, under the editorship of Professor R. B. Hetnarski. The present volume begins with a biographical sketch and bibliography of Professor Boley, along with a list of his doctoral students. Thirteen papers on dynamics and stability follow. The first four papers deal with wave propagation and vibration studies in solids and structures. The next two papers study wave propagation in fluids, while the seventh paper is concerned with the dynamic response of random media. Two papers dealing with structural vibrations exhibiting instability and one dealing with dynamic buckling delamination are presented next.
