The first three editions of this conference occured in 1993, 1996 and 1999. The Seminar covered several topics: fundamental aspects of stochastic analysis, such as stochastic partial differential equations and random fields, and applications to current active fields such as probabilistic methods in fluid dynamics, biomathe matics, and financial modeling. As in the previous editions, this last topic was the subject of the Fourth Minisymposium on Stochastic Methods in Financial Models. These proceedings aim to present key aspects of these topics to a larger audience. All papers in this volume have been refereed. A major topic within Stochastic Analysis is the area of random fields which includes as particular cases, Gaussian random fields, stochastic partial differential equations (s. p. d. e. 's) and stochastic differential equations with values in Banach spaces. The main goal is to describe, develop and analyze iterative space and time domain decompositions of such problems on the infinite-dimensional level. While domain decomposition methods have a long history dating back well over one hundred years, it is only during the last decade that they have become a major tool in numerical analysis of partial differential equations. A keyword in this context is parallelism. This development is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that we just encountered the 15th annual conference precisely on this topic. Without attempting to provide a complete list of introductory references let us just mention the monograph by Quarteroni and Valli [91] as a general up-to-date reference on domain decomposition methods for partial differential equations. The emphasis of this monograph is to put domain decomposition methods in the context of so-called virtual optimal control problems and, more importantly, to treat optimal control problems for partial differential equations and their decom positions by an all-at-once approach. I have hesitated quite a long time before deciding to do the re-writing work-the first edition has been sold out for a few years. There was absolutely no question of just correcting numerous misprints and a few mathematical errors. When I wrote the first edition, in 1989, the convexity and Duistermaat-Heckman theorems together with the irruption of toric varieties on the scene of symplectic geometry, due to Delzant, around which the book was organized, were still rather recent (less than ten years). I myself was rather happy with a small contribution I had made to the subject. I was giving a post-graduate course on all that and, well, these were lecture notes, just lecture notes. By chance, the book turned out to be rather popular: during the years since then, I had the opportunity to meet quite a few people(1) who kindly pretended to have learnt the subject in this book. However, the older book does not satisfy at all the idea I have now of what a good book should be. So that this 'new edition' is, indeed, another book. 328 pp. Englisch.
