Die groBe Planungsunsicherheit, die bei den hohen Anlageko sten ein bedeutendes Risiko ftir die in Frage kommenden Be triebe darstellt, verhinderte unter anderem eine breitere Anwendung. In Anbetracht der Schwierigkeiten ist es das Ziel dieser Ar beit, Herstellern und Anwendern Hinweise und Hilfsmittel zur Planung und Auslegung von FFS zu liefern, die ein kleineres Investitionsrisiko bewirken. Zur Erarbeitung der hierftir notwendigen Grundlagen mtissen die Anforderungen an die raumliche Zuordnung, Dimensionie rung und Konstruktion der einzelnen Betriebsmittel ebenso betrachtet werden wie die Kosten und die zeitlichen Zus- menhange in FFS. Vor 150 Jahren war das Risiko einer Operation noch so groB, daB die Narkose als zusatzli che Todesursache kaum beachtet wurde. Durch die Entwicklung der Operationstechnik und die Einftihrung des Asepsis wurde die Mortalitat erheblich gesenkt, so daB auch nicht lebensnotwendige Operation en ausgeftihrt werden konnten. In diesem Stadium wurde es wichtig, nun auch narkosebedingte Zwischen falle im Rahmen einer Operation zu verhindem. In der Mitte des vorigen Jahrhunderts gab es nur wenige Substanzen, die ftir eine Narkose geeignet waren. Die wichtigsten waren Ather und Chloroform, und es war sehr schwierig mit diesen Substanzen eine sichere Narkose durchzuftihren, die tief genug war, eine Operation zu ermoglichen und trotzdem dem Patienten so wenig wie moglich zu schaden. Es gab zu diesem Zeitpunkt weder BlutdruckmeBgerate noch Beatmungsmaschinen; auch waren die Eigenschaften des Sauerstoffs nicht hinreichend bekannt. AuBerdem war den damaligen »Anaesthesisten« meistens nur das Grundleiden des Patienten bekannt, das die Operation erforderlich machte. Neuware -The number of patients with occlusive peripheral vascular disease of the lower ex tremities is still growing as rapidly as the number of patients with coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. Due to the increase in average life expectancy during the last few decades, more patients now need surgical vascular reconstruc tion. This actually means a demand for more centers specializing in vascular surgery and equipped with intensive care facilities, since the number of patients with cardio vascular and bronchopulmonary complications is increasing as well. In addition, the number of patients needing repeated vascular surgery has been growing. Therefore, the search for simple procedures to recanalize the arterial lumen which could be performed under local anesthesia is no surprise. Unfortunately peripheral vascular disease is still frequently treated by amputations. In 1967, the fIrst report in German on percutaneous recanalization of arteries with thrombotic occlusions and stenoses appeared in Rontgenfortschritte. The meth od described in this report had been published by Dotter and Judkins in 1964. Today, 10 years after their report, more data have been systematically collected on this method in Europe than in the United States, where it was developed. Possibly an explanation of this state of affairs is that nonsurgical treatment is favored more in Europe than in the United States. To reduce the book's extend, a selection of characteristic protozoans had to be made, limited to those which could be regarded as representative for entire groups. Interest in parasitic protozoans has been steadily on the increase over the last 10 years. This particular group of organisms thus seemed a very suitable choice. The' Apicomplexa' were selected as an area of emphasis. These once were part of the collective group called Sporozoa which included many parasitic protozoans of uncertain taxonomy. Fine structural research has been of especial significance for the Apicomplexa, since Protozoa belonging to this subgroup can now be named, characterized, and classified by features recognizable by electron microscopy. Only the fine structure of whole cells is represented in this atlas, so that the ciliates have been of necessity excluded. Their cells are too large in diameter in any case for our purpose here. They also play only a minor role as parasitic organisms. This book utilizes a new method to facilitate the analysis of protozoan fine structure. Its genealogical tree is as intricate as that of mankind itself: There are dead ends and superfluous re-discoveries. Due to these circumstances and to the pure extent of the topic, it is impossible to give more than a few highlights here. The first relevant observational fact was discovered by the famous English astronomer E. Halley in 1695 (Berry, 1961). He simply could not arrive at an agreement between ancient and recent eclipses using a constant mean angular motion of the Moon. Instead, he had to intro duce an empirical acceleration term in the mean motion. Known as the 'secular acceleration', it has ever since been a most challenging sub ject of celestial mechanics and a main branch of the genealogical tree already mentioned. In 1754, completely independently and almost certainly in ignorance of those specialists' activities, the German philosopher Kant established the idea of tidal friction as a decelerating mechanism for the rotation of the Earth (Felber, 1974).
