This became possible by the development of robust and high-order accurate numerical algorithms as well as the construc tion of enhanced computer hardware, e. g. , parallel and vector architectures, workstation clusters. All these improvements allow the numerical simulation of real world problems arising for instance in automotive and aviation indus try. Nowadays numerical simulations may be considered as an indispensable tool in the design of engineering devices complementing or avoiding expen sive experiments. In order to obtain qualitatively as well as quantitatively reliable results the complexity of the applications continuously increases due to the demand of resolving more details of the real world configuration as well as taking better physical models into account, e. g. , turbulence, real gas or aeroelasticity. Although the speed and memory of computer hardware are currently doubled approximately every 18 months according to Moore's law, this will not be sufficient to cope with the increasing complexity required by uniform discretizations. The future task will be to optimize the utilization of the available re sources. Therefore new numerical algorithms have to be developed with a computational complexity that can be termed nearly optimal in the sense that storage and computational expense remain proportional to the 'inher ent complexity' (a term that will be made clearer later) problem. A few decades ago it became obvious that, because the properties of materials depend so critically on the microstructure of their components, this characterisation must be determined to the atomic level. This means that the position - as well as the nature - of individual atoms has to be determined at 'critical' regions close to defects such as dislocations, interfaces, and surfaces. The great impact of advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques became apparent in the area of semiconducting materials, where the nature of internal interfaces between silicon and the corresponding silicides could be identified, and the results used to enhance the understanding of the properties of the compounds studied. At that time, advanced TEM techniques existed predominantly in the US. However, advanced TEM instrumentation was not available in the ma terials science and solid-state science communities in Germany. This gap was bridged by the late Peter Haasen who, after a visit to the US, initiated a Priority Programme on Microstructural Characterisation at the Volkswagen Foundation (Hannover). The Editor in-Chief, Professor Dusan Mesko, conceived the idea of the Vademecum during a very intensely, in tellectually active period as a visiting Olga Havel Fellow from Slovak Republic at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. It was here during his study stay that much of the conceptual planning and detailed realization was being completed. It was with much interest that I observed Professor Mesko in his effort, and I know while here he has gained admiration of those who had the privilege of interacting with him. When the first edition of the Vademecum ap peared and we received the copy for the Mayo Library and for myself, I was overcome with a genuine sense of joy. In this era of rapid information and the need to access usable infor mation book such as this cannot be but judged extremely useful. It is my hope that this work, which attests to the thoroughness of Professor Mesko's and his co-workers efforts will prove to be fruitful for the students quick reference, for clinicans and house officers lightening of burdens, particularly of on-call nights, and for the teaching staff as well to quickly access needed information. With these sentiments, we wish the authors and the book well and also hope that the potential widening circle of readers and users will benefit from the work pre sented.

Neuware -The nature of the physical Universe has been increasingly better understood in recent years, and cosmological concepts have undergone a rapid evolution (see, e.g., [11], [2],or [5]). Although there are alternate theories, it is generally believed that the large-scale relationships and homogeneities that we see can only be explainedby having the universe expand suddenlyin a very early ¿in ationary¿ period. Subsequent evolution of the Universe is described by the Hubble expansion, the observation that the galaxies are ying away from each other. We can attribute di erent rates of this expansion to domination of di erent cosmological processes, beginning with radiation, evolving to matter domination, and, relatively recently, to vacuum domination (the Cosmological Constant term)[4]. We assume throughout that we will be relying as much as possible on observational data, with simulations used only for limited purposes, e.g., the appearance of the Milky Wayfrom nearbyintergalactic viewpoints. The visualization of large-scale astronomical data sets using xed, non-interactive animations has a long history. Several books and lms exist, ranging from ¿Cosmic View: The Universe in Forty Jumps¿ [3] by Kees Boeke to ¿Powers of 10¿ [6,13] by Charles and Ray Eames, and the recent Imax lm ¿Cosmic Voyage¿ [15].
