I received many stimulating and en couraging responses, however, some of the book's reviewers wanted to stress the fact that an extensive literature of network theory was not included or reported in the book. But the main aspect of the book is intended to be substantive rather than methodical: networks simply serve as a remedy for doing some first steps in analysing and modelling complex biological systems. For an advanced stage in the investigation of a particular system it may be appropriate to replace the pheno menological network method by more detailed techniques like statistical equations or computer simulations. According to this intention, the second edition of the book has been enlarged by further biological examples for network analysis, not by more network theory. There is a completely new section on a network model for photoreception. For this section I am obliged to J. Tiedge who did most of the detailed calculation and to my colleague Professor Stieve with whom we have had a very fruitful cooperation. The annual meeting was held in the newly-built 'Kopfklinik' of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, which houses the departments of neurosurgery, neurology and ophthalmology. As far as possible, many functions of this hospital were centralized because this has economic advantages and saves personell. Other functional units, such as the operating theatres, the intensive care units, research laboratories and units specific to the individual disciplines remained decentralized and independent. This concept has proved to be a happy solution. At the membership meeting of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurochirurgie, Prof. Dr. K. J. The annual meeting was held in the newly-built 'Kopfklinik' of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, which houses the departments of neurosurgery, neurology and ophthalmology. As far as possible, many functions of this hospital were centralized because this has economic advantages and saves personell. Other functional units, such as the operating theatres, the intensive care units, research laboratories and units specific to the individual disciplines remained decentralized and independent. This concept has proved to be a happy solution. At the membership meeting of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurochirurgie, Prof. Dr. K. J. Wozu dieses Buch Die friiher iiblichen rontgendiagnostischen Verfahren, wie z.B. die Luftfiil lung der Hirnkammern nach einer Lumbalpunktion und die Kontrastmitteldar stellung der HirngefaBe nach einer Punktion der Halsschlagader, sind eingrei fende, zum Teil fUr den Patienten auBerordentlich unangenehme Untersuchungs methoden, die dariiber hinaus mit einem Risiko belastet sind. Die mit diesen Untersuchungsverfahren gestellten Diagnosen stiitzen sich in erster Linie auf indirekte Zeichen eines intrakraniellen raumfordernden Prozesses wie auf eine Verlagerung der mit Luft gefUllten Hirnkammern oder auf eine Verdrangung von HirngefaBen. Der Tumor selbst lieB sich dagegen nur bei bestimmten Arten direkt darstellen. 1m Gegensatz dazu erhalten wir mit der Computertomographie in allen Fallen ein Bild des pathologischen Prozesses selbst, und zwar ohne Belastigung des Kranken und mit minimalem Risiko. Wir sehen neben den pathologischen Veranderungen aber auch gleichzeitig die normalen Hirnstrukturen und damit auch die Auswirkungen des Prozesses auf seine Umgebung. Heute, fast ein Jahrzehnt nach der revolutionierenden Entdeckung HOUNS FIELDS, ist eine Diagnostik der Hirntumoren ohne Computertomographie kaum mehr vorstellbar und arztlicherseits nicht mehr zu verantworten. Aus der praoperativen Diagnostik ist die Computertomographie also nicht mehr wegzudenken.
