This symposium was sponsored by IBM Germany and was held September 17-19, 1979, in Bad Neuenahr, West Germany. According to Graham Richards [Nature 278, 507 (1979)] the 'Third Age of Quantum Chemistry' has started-;-where the results of quantum chemical calculations have become so accurate and reliable that they can guide the experimentalists in their search for the unknown. The particular example highlighted by Richards was the suc cessful prediction and subsequent identification of the relative energies, transition probabilities and geometries of the lowest triplet states of acetylene. The theoretical predictions were based chiefly upon the work of three groups: Kammer [Chern. Phys. Lett. ~, 529 (1970)] had made qualitatively correct predictions; Demoulin [Chern. Phys. 11, 329 (1975)] had calculated the potential energy curves for the two lowest triplet states (3 and 3 ) of B A acetylene; and Wetmore and Schaefer III [J. Chern. Phys. ~~ 1648 (1978)] had determined the geometries of the cis (3B and ~A ) and the trans (3B and 3A ) isomers of these two sta~es. Inua 2 2 guided search, Wendt, Hunziker and Hippler [J. Chern. PHys. 70, 4044 (1979)] succeeded in finding the predicted near infrared absorption of the cis triplet acetylene (no corresponding absorp tion for the trans form was found, which is in agreement with theory), and the resolved structure of the spectrum confirmed the predicted geometries conclusively. 344 pp. Englisch.

In all, a total of 79 lecturers and students attended the meeting: they had diverse backgrounds in chemistry, physics and mathematics. In my proposal to NATO requesting financial support for an Advanced Study Institute, I suggested that molecular physics was facing a qualitatively new experimental situation in which the exploration of previously inaccessible dynamical phenomena would become of increasing importance. At the same time I was aware that in recent years powerful theoretical techniques, that might prove crucial tools for the interpretation of the new experiments, have been developed in mathematics and theoretical physics. The aim of the ASI was to review at an advanced level these recent developments, juxtaposing new theory with new experimental pos sibilities in the hope that the participants in the-Institute would through their subsequent work increase the awareness of the whole molecular theory community of the changing nature of chemical physics. The existence of re ceptor substances on the surface of cells that recognize and bind to extracellular molecules was proposed at the beginning of the century by the pharmacologist and immunologist Paul Ehrlich and the physiologist J. N. Langley. Since then, receptors have been found to play an important role in numerous physiological and pathological processes. Over the years many attempts have been made to physically isolate and chemically characterize receptors, but because of the receptors' extremely low concentration and membrane localization, these ef forts have met with limited success. Yet, despite the failure to characterize receptor substances, the concept of the presence of such molecules has had considerable heuristic value. Using pharmacological, physiological, and im munologic approaches, researchers have identified several specific receptors, e. g. , a-and ~-adrenergic, nicotinic and muscarinic cholinergic, and histami nergic. With the characterization of various types of receptors on cell mem branes, many drugs were developed that proved to be experimentally and ther apeutically useful. It was only in the early 1970s that methods for the specific measurement, chemical characterization, and physical isolation of cell membrane receptors were developed. These advances were made possible by the availability of ligands with high specific radioactivity that retained their biological activity and of experimental procedures that differentiated between specific and non specific binding of ligands. 696 pp. Englisch.

The first three deal with kinetic aspects of compositional variations both within individual phases and across crystal boundaries. Basically, the authors use the kinetic theory and the sparsely available rate data to explain the formation of various types of zoning and the exsolution processes in silicates. Loomis rightly argues that 'the kinetic inhibitions to reequilibration that preserve primary igneous crystals and high grade metamorphic assemblages also affect the crystallization and prograde meta morphism of these rocks.' These 'kinetic inhibitions' appear in the form of zoned crystals, reaction rims and disequilibrium assemblages. Their proper recognition and quantitative characterization leads to an understanding of the physico-chem ical history of the rock. On a similar theme, I examine possible relationships between the exsolution processes in Ca-Fe-Mg pyroxenes and the cation order-disorder on nonequiva lent crystallographic sites. A multi-technique study of exsolutions in crystals employing electron microscopy and X-ray structural refinements should contrib ute greatly in understanding the thermal history of the rock. Many geothermometric studies result in discordant temperatures when the estimates are done using serveral coexisting pairs of minerals in a single specimen. Besides food, mother's milk gives an orchestra of complex interacting bacteriostatic, bactericidal and anti-viral substances which contribute to the establishment of the normal intestinal flora. These mechanisms probably explain the many reports that breast fed babies get fewer infections than those fed artificially; deprivation from this effect of artificial feeding can be devastating in developing countries, with limited hygienic facilities, bad water supplies and sanitation. Infection is also more frequent in artificially fed infants in developed countries. Ingesting antigens is an important step in initiating the immune response, but the reSponse to such antigens is a controlled one, and besides antibody and cell mediated responses, partial tolerance, and immune exclusion (reduction of subsequent entry of antigen) occur. From such studies has emerged the fluid mosaic model of membrane structure and this volume contains a collection of articles written by noted workers in this field. A major emphasis in this area of research concerns the changes brought about on virus-induced and carcinogen-induced tumor cells. The first chapter comes from a laboratory that was one of the first to visualize the distribution of transplantation antigens on cell membrane surfaces. Various methods are described for visualizing these antigens by electron microscopy. Davis and his colleagues then proceed to show how the antibody-induced redistribution of antigenic macromolecules led to the formulation of the fluid mosaic model. From Hakomori's labora tory comes a methodological paper describing a novel method of labeling the carbohydrate portions of the membrane glycoproteins that are exposed on the outer surfaces of cells. Lehrman's lifelong love and study of animal behavior gave us a wealth of new insights into reproductive behavior and evolution. It is significant that these same movements may be used to mediate other behaviors, and that these same muscle contractions, in different sequence, may be used to produce other movements. The immense journey of white-bearded gnus across the Serengeti plains to suitable calving grounds is likewise a migratory behavior mediated through rather more varied, yet repetitive, limb movements, each produced by a complex sequence of muscle contractions. Again, these same movements may be used to mediate other behaviors, and again, the details of each limb movement may be varied through variations in the strength and the sequence of muscle contractions. A laboratory rat may learn to perform an escape behavior in a shuttle box, bringing its performance to a high level of efficiency by modifying its movement on successive trials. After intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital sodium in an amount sufficient to render the animal severely incoordinated, the escape behavior is still performed, albeit through a different sequence of move ments, even to 'rolling' out of the compartment in response to the warning signal. 660 pp. Englisch.

It has been possible to do this with reasonable efficiency by searching an automated coded microfilm collection of the report and open literature and of data sheets and question naires provided by commercial and research producers of pure materials. With the growth of the collection to over 70,000 documents and the increase in the demand for more general background information, it has been necessary to compile bibliographies on an increasing variety of subjects. These have been used as indexes to the microfilmed documents for more efficient searching, and in the past distributed in response to individual requests. However, their size and number no longer permit so casual and uneconomic a method of distribution. The 'ORNL Solid State Physics Literature Guides' is a practical alternative. Organization The subject organization of the bibliography is given by the Table of Contents. Each section is preceded by a collection of reviews, bibliographies, and 'general' papers (i.e., those dealing with methods or equipment rather than single materials, or with such a wide variety of materials that no subsection was appropriate). There were seventy participants of whom eighteen were lecturers and members of the advisory committee. All NATO countries except Holland, Iceland and Portugal were re presented. In addition a small number of participants came from non-NATO countries Japan, Ireland and Switzerland. An aim of the organising committee was to bring together scientists of wide interests and expertise in the defect structure of insulators and semiconductors. Thus major emphases in the pro gramme concerned the use of spectroscopy and microscopy in revealing the structure of point defects and their aggregates, line defects as well as planar and volume defects. The lectures revealed that in general little is known of the fate of the interstitial in most irradiated solids. Nor are the dynamic properties of defects under stood in sufficient detail that one can state how point defects cluster and eventually become macroscopic defects. Although this book faithfully reproduces the material covered by the invited speakers, it does not really follow the flow of the lectures. The investigation on the nuclear equation of state can only be accomplished in the laboratory by compressing and heating up nuclear matter and the only mechanism known to date to achieve this goal is through shock compression and -heating in violent high energy heavy ion collisions. This key mechanism has been proposed and highly disputed in of high energy heavy ion physics, the early 70's. This has created a new area of research into novel materials since clusters cannot be regarded either as a 'large' molecule or as a fragment of the bulk. Both experimental and theoretical studies are revealing unusual properties that are not ob served in solid state environments. The structures of micro-clusters are found to be significantly distorted from the most symmetric arrangement, some even exhibiting pentagonal symmetry commonly found in icosahedric structures. The unusual stability of certain clusters, now described as 'magic number species', shows striking similarities with the nuclear shell structure. The relative stabilities of clusters depend not only on the composition of the clusters but also on their charged states. The studies on spontaneous fragmentation of mUltiply charged clusters, commonly referred to as Coulomb explosion, illustrate the role of electronic bonding mechanisms on stability of clusters. The effect of foreign atoms on geometry and stability of clusters and the interaction of gas atoms with clusters are showing promise for an indepth understanding of chemisorption and catalysis. The magnetic and optical properties are dependent not only on cluster size but also on its geometry. Even after World War II the rule of three was considered to be sufficient mathematical knowledge for chemists and the short course of 'higher mathematics' at technical universities was the test most feared by chemistry students. However, even then some en visaged the theoretical derivation of information on the properties of molecules from knowledge of the bonding of the component atoms. One such physical method is ultraviolet spectrophotometry. As a result, the amount of research and writing on the subject of drug problems has greatly increased, and it has become very difficult for one individual to keep up with all the relevant literature. There is thus an acute need in the field for critical reviews that assess current developments, and the present series is intended to fill this need. The series is not to be an 'annual review' in the usual sense. The aim is not to cover all the work reported during the preceding year in relation to a fixed selection of topics. Rather, it is to present each year evaluative papers on topics in which enough recent progress has been made to alter the general scope in a particular area. Owing to the multidisciplinary nature of problems of drug use and dependence, the papers published in each volume will be drawn from several disciplines. However, some volumes may be devoted to one partic ular problem, with individual reviews and papers examining various aspects of it. The composition of the editorial board and the international advisory board reflects these objectives. The aim of these reviews is to bring certain areas of corrosion science and technology into a sharp focus. The setting was ideal for a small meeting whose purpose was to generate as much discussion as possible between the various participants. One of the major topics of this conference was neural induction, that is, the first step in neurogenesis. Neural induction remains poorly understood at the molecular level as compared to the sub sequent steps of neuronal migration and differentiation. It thus appeared important to unite different researchers working on this fundamental process of neural induction with scientists studying later steps of neurogenesis in order to exchange ideas and suggestions. We would like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of Marie France Hanseler, the administrative assistant of CNRS who is respon sible for the Institute. Because of the great interest in these drugs in various fields, I was very pleased to accept the proposal and to give the conference the sponsorship of the University of Bologna. It was an added pleasure to accept the chairmanship of the meeting, together with Professors Sensi and Adams. At the same time, the Minister of Education approved a proposal which also came from the Faculty of Pharmacy, to offer an advanced course on the topic 'Radiosensitizers of Hypoxic Cells This course was subsequently approved by a special Committee of the NATO Scientific Programme as an Advanced Study Institute.
