Upon perusal of this bibliography, devoted to the subject of laser window and mirror materials, it becomes very apparent that the effect of the laser on materials R&D has been enormous. Several hundred papers and reports, representing millions of dollars of effort, have been promulgated over the past decade; and as new frequencies, improved tunability, higher power, and other charac teristics are achieved, we can expect even greater demands and requirements on the materials com munity. What are some of the highlights disclosec by this bibliography with regard to work already ac complished First, one can note the extensive investigations into developing new materials while at the same time improving old ones. Among the latter, alkali halides, for example, have essentially had a rebirth. I n the past five years more progress has been achieved in the chemical and structural perfec tion of this class of materials than in the entire preceding century. Their purpose was to discuss the current status of knowledge concerning the thrombotic process in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. It was readily agreed that thrombosis often played a major role in plaque building and in plaque complication. It was also commented, however, that the data were qualitative in nature and that quantitative infonnation was remarkably sparse. The term thromboatherogenesis was thought to be appropriate for those phenomena in which the full expression of the thrombotic process is manifest. At the same time, recent research was noted in which what appears to be an important pathway for the initiation of atherogenesis arises from the reaction of platelets with injured arterial endothelium and'Subendothelium without necessarily involving the complete classical thrombotic process. Barriers of specialized terminologies form, which cause scientists to lose contact with their colleagues, and differences in points-of-view emerge which hinder the unification of knowledge among the various disciplines, and even within a given discipline. The meeting was conducted in a generally informal way which allowed maximum time for discussion but the relatively unstructured nature of the debates made them unsuitable for publication. The amount of editing necessary meant that the printed version of the exchanges would bear little resemblance to the original, hence their omission. All the papers presented here have been scrutinized and retyped in a standard format. However, the diverse interests of ISOTT's members, reflected in the wide spectrum of the material submitted, made total editorial uniformity an unrealistic goal. The initial idea for the Institute arose one blustery and miserable day at Fermilab during discussions about all the wonderful summer schools that were prevalent throughout Europe but essentially nonexistent in the United States. I felt that it would be of great value to have an Institute that was located in a beautiful area and that catered primarily to the hard working experimenters who stoically suffer both the winter cold and summer heat at Fermilab. Summer schools in our field generally provide the very useful opportunity of meeting physicists who work along different lines of research, as well as the opportunity of keeping abreast of new developments. All schools tend to emphasize recent theoretical advances and phenomenology, while technical questions that are of great interest to experimenters are seldom discussed. It seemed appropriate therefore to organize a summer institute that would combine topics in accelerator design, data acquisition and the like, with the more standard theoretical fare. Among the reported cases, a significant therapeutic effectiveness was found in some early stage cancers of lung, esophagus and stomach. The development of this therapy requires interdisciplinary studies from such diverse fields as physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and experimental and clinical oncology. The contents of the book reflect the character of this research and deal with all the problems, from fundamental to clinical, that still require to be analysed and understood for a better evaluation 'of the potential of this therapy. Nils Christie, in Unge norske lovorertredere, had done the first such study as his dissertation at the University of Oslo in 1960. Professor Thorsten Sellin was the inspiration for the U.S. study. He could read Norwegian, and I could a little because I studied at the University of Oslo in my graduate years. Our interest in pursuing a birth cohort study in the United States was fostered by the encouragement of Saleem Shah who awarded us a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to begin our birth cohort studies at the University of Pennsylvania by investigating the delinquency of the 1945 cohort. We studied this group of 9,945 boys extensively through official criminal history and school records of their juvenile years. Subsequently, we followed up the cohort as adults using both adult arrest histories and an interview of a sample of the cohort. It is particularly frequent in ohildren where convul sions may lead to brain damage and subsequent seizure activity in adulthood. First as dyestuffs, meaicinals and tannins and, much later, because of their potential use in examining the systematic and evolutionary relationships of plants, and their impli cation in defence against both herbivores and phytopatho gens. It is not surprising, therefore, that the first formally organised Society of Phytochemists, the Plant Phenolics group which was established in England in 1958, should have devoted themselves to an intensive study of these compounds. They were quickly followed by a like group in North America. But, by the mid-1960's, it was obvious to the members of both societies that their net was spread wider than just phenolic compounds and in 1965 both adopted a more appropriate name, The Phytochemical Society (now Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE), and The Phytochemical Society of North America (PSNA) respec tively). To join the expertise of the tradi tional surface scientist with that of the electron microscopist has however been a slow and difficult process. In the past few years remarkable progress has been achieved, including the development of new techniques of scanning transmission and reflection imaging as well as low energy microscopy, all carried out in greatly improved vacuum conditions. Most astonishing of all has been the advent of the scanning tunneling electron microscope providing atomic resolution in a manner readily compatible with most surface science diagnostic procedures. The problem of beam damage, though often serious, is increasingly well understood so that we can assess the reliability and usefulness of the results which can now be obtained in catalysis studies and a wide range of surface science applications. These new developments and many others in more established surface techniques are all described in this book, based on lectures given at a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Erice, Sicily, at Easter 1987.
