Nils Christie, in Unge norske lovorertredere, had done the first such study as his dissertation at the University of Oslo in 1960. Professor Thorsten Sellin was the inspiration for the U.S. study. He could read Norwegian, and I could a little because I studied at the University of Oslo in my graduate years. Our interest in pursuing a birth cohort study in the United States was fostered by the encouragement of Saleem Shah who awarded us a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to begin our birth cohort studies at the University of Pennsylvania by investigating the delinquency of the 1945 cohort. We studied this group of 9,945 boys extensively through official criminal history and school records of their juvenile years. Subsequently, we followed up the cohort as adults using both adult arrest histories and an interview of a sample of the cohort. First as dyestuffs, meaicinals and tannins and, much later, because of their potential use in examining the systematic and evolutionary relationships of plants, and their impli cation in defence against both herbivores and phytopatho gens. It is not surprising, therefore, that the first formally organised Society of Phytochemists, the Plant Phenolics group which was established in England in 1958, should have devoted themselves to an intensive study of these compounds. They were quickly followed by a like group in North America. But, by the mid-1960's, it was obvious to the members of both societies that their net was spread wider than just phenolic compounds and in 1965 both adopted a more appropriate name, The Phytochemical Society (now Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE), and The Phytochemical Society of North America (PSNA) respec tively). This represents a considerable achievement, given the growth in the number of review volumes and the increasing tendency for journals to publish review articles. The achievement was reached not only through metic ulous attention to quality and detail but also by providing a forum for the expression of views, information, and results that would stimulate discussion. Advances in Microbial Ecology will continue to provide such a focus, although, because of the frequency of publication, it would not be practicable to introduce a 'reply' or 'comment' section. Although we do not deliberately aim to provide a forum for controversy, we encourage speculation based on sound scientific arguments. In addition, we would like to encourage authors to offer chapters for consideration. In the past, the volumes have largely comprised invited chapters. The results using H2-receptor antagonists, together with the findings that histamine is produced and stored in the fundic mucosa and released upon vagal or hormonal stimulation, indicate that this amine is the major physiological stimulant of the parietal cells. The concepts of histamine as a 'final common chemo stimulator' of parietal cells, and as part of a 'multi-messenger' potentiating interaction of various hormonal secretagogues on parietal cells, have both been proposed to explain the involvement of hista mine in gastric secretory mechanisms. Histamine may also be an im portant factor in the pathogenesis of gastric hypersecretion and peptic ulcer disease since its mobilization from gastric mucosal stores is accelerated in peptic ulcer disease, and since treatment with vagotomy or H2-receptor antagonists decreases histamine release and increases its degradation in the gastric mucosa. On the whole, one could divide the huge amount of recent investigations into two parts although there is much overlap bet ween these regimes, namely investigations on magnetic exchange interactions constrained to mainly one or two dimensions and, secondly, work done on Id metallic solids or linear chain compounds with Id delocalized electrons. There is, of course, overlap from one extreme case to the other with these solids and in some rare cases both phenomena are studied on one and the same crystal. In fact, however, most of the scientific groups in this area could be associated roughly with one of these categories and,in addition, a separation between theoreticians and experimentalists in each of these groups leads to a further splitting of interests although many theories about these solids have been tested by experimenta lists. Nevertheless, more cooperation and understanding between scientists working on low-dimensional cooperative phenomena should appreciably stimulate further development. With a better inderdis ciplinary understanding, new ideas could possibly help chemists in synthesizing tailor-cut solids. Puerto Rico between June 1 and 5, 1992. It was attended by about 80 scientists from allover the world. The Workshop was started in 1977 by V. C. Aguilera-Navarro, in Sao Paolo, Brazil, as the Panamerican Workshop on Condensed Matter Theories, to promote the exchange of ideas and techniques of groups that normally do not interact, such as people working in the areas of Nuclear Physics and Solid state Physics, Many Body Theory, or Quantum Fluids, and Classical Statistical Mechanics, and so on. It had also the purpose of bringing together people from different regions of the globe. The next CMT Workshop was held in 1978 in Trieste, Italy, outside of America. But the next four met in the American continent: Buenos Aires, Argentina (1979), Caracas, Venezuela (1980), Mexico City, Mexico (1981), and St. Louis, Missouri (1982). At this time the scope and the participation had increased, and the name was changed to the 'International' Workshop in CMT. The 1983 edition took place in Altenberg, Germany. The following CMT workshops took place in Granada, Spain (1984), San Francisco, California (1985), Argonne, Illinois (1986), Oulu, Finland (1987), Taxco, Mexico (1988), Campos do Jordao, Brazil (1989), Elba Island, Italy (1990), and Mar del Plata, Argentina (1991). The developments have been particularly impressive in two areas : the di-electronic recombination of electrons with ions and the collisional processes of mUltiply charged ions. For dielectronic recombination, a major event was the obtainment, in 1983, of the first experimental data. This provided, at last, a non speculative basis for the study of that intricate and subtle process and strongly stimulated the theoretical activities. Multiply charged ions, on the other hand, have become popular, thanks to the development of powerful ion sources. This circumstance, together with a pressing demand from thermonuclear research for ionisation and charge exchange cross sections, has triggered systematic experimental investigations and new theoretical studies, which have contributed to considerably enlarge, over the last five years, our understanding of the collisional processes of multiply charged ions. Many other areas in physics and chemistry have undergone similarly spectacular development: beam foil spectroscopy in atomic physics, studies in atomic collisions, materials implantation, defects creation, nuclear microanalysis, and so on. Now, this most recent activity by itself and in its evident connec tion with the others has brought a new impetus to both the funda mental and the applied aspects of materials science. A summer school on 'Material Characterization Using Ion Beams' has resulted from these developments and the realization that the use of ion beams is not restricted to accelerators but covers a wide energy range in the developing technology. The idea of the ion beam as a common denominator of many act1v1t1es dealing with surface and near-surface characterization was enthu siastically received by many scientists and a school on this subject received the positive endorsement of NATO. The Advanced Study Institute on Materials Science has assumed for us the status of an 'institution' leading to better contact among the many laboratories engaged in this field. The discussion sessions which followed these review talks were extremely valuable and almost all the participants played an active role. Essentially all of the verbal contributions presented at this ASI were subsequently put into written format, which is why these proceedings are so extensive. ~hey do, however, provide an up-to-date summary of DNA synthesis in a wide variety of subjects with many of the remaining problems clearly expressed. The editing of these contributions has been essentially confined to alterations in style and presentation. We have taken some liberties in the re-organization of the papers into related sections. Over the last few years, substantial progress has been made in the experimental study of photon- or electron interactions with atoms. The accumulation of new results showed clearly it was necessary to introduce electron correlations in the theoretical models in order to explain the existence and the probability of a large number of processes, in particular multiple processes. Among the most recently de veloped techniques, and one around which a storm of controversy has developed, is what has now been earmarked as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Within this phenomenon, molecules adsorbed onto metal surfaces under certain conditions exhibit an anomalously large interaction cross section for the Raman effect. This makes it possible to observe the detailed vibrational signature of the adsorbate in the ambient phase with an energy resolution much higher than that which is presently available in electron energy loss spectroscopy and when the surface is in contact with a much larger amount of material than that which can be tolerated in infrared absorption experiments. The ability to perform vibrational spectroscopy under these conditions would lead to a new understanding about the chemical identity, geome try, and bonding of adsorbed material at a level previously unacces sible. It is for these reasons that the last few years have brought an explosion of activity surrounding the exploitation of SERS. It was attended by 624 participants who gave 538 presentations, more than 10 times the numbers of the first meeting; these proceedings contain 354 papers that were submitted for publication. The political events in Europe that made it possible to hold this Congress in Prague also allowed for the first time the participation of large numbers of scientists from Eastern Europe, as weil as from Asia, and the organizers were truly gratified by this happy circumstance. It is now clear not only that mucosal immunityencompasses the huge area of mucosal surfaces and most physiological organ systems, but also that mucosal immunology extends over the whole global surface and all continents! The sheer size of the Congress and number of manuscripts unfortunately entailed some unexpected problems in editing and assembling the proceedings, partly due to the diversity of linguistic styles not represented at earlier meetings, and we apologize to the authors who have patiently awaited the publication of their contributions. 744 pp. Englisch.

Many years later, in 1940, Pauling proffered the concept that antibodies comprised a single poly peptide chain and that each end of the protein could form an antigen-binding site. Burnet tried to explain the diversity of antibody specificity by hypothesizing that it was cell-derived. These hypotheses probably have led to as much or more experimentation and discussion than any other of the many conjectures set forth to explain immunity on a molecular and cellular basis. Extensive investigations, initially stimulated by these propositions, proved Pauling's notion incorrect. In its demise, however, the multichain structure of the immunoglobulins was realized. In retrospect it be comes obvious that Ehrlich's idea, though not correct, was borne of amazing logic and cognition. Expansion of Burnet's theory seems to be occurring presently; much excitement is engendered by the finding of cell-bound immunoglobulin receptors. Ouring the preceding dozen years, immunochemists have accumulated enormous quantities of data. Though there is so much yet to be done, as a result of this research one may now discuss antigen-binding sites in relation to the protein's primary structure. On behalf of all of us who attended I wish to extend our sincere thanks to the whole Tipton family for making us feel so welcome in Ireland. It has been a decade since the frrst workshop was held in Bern, Switzerland. The scope of the meetings reflected somewhat the changes that have occurred in biochemistry during the past decade. At the first meeting primarily enzymes and their properties were discussed. At this last meeting many of the talks centered on gene regulation as well as more traditional aspects of enzymology and metabolism. During the past decade site directed mutagenesis to probe for the active site of an enzyme has become part of traditional enzymology; this was virtually unheard of at our frrst meeting.
