This monograph honors the memory of Professor Hans R. Lindner, a productive and innovative scientist greatly respected and admired by his col leagues. When addressing the opening session I remarked that my impres sion of the Weizmann Institute was one or two large buildings hous ing the various departments. New applications include highly emissive cathodes for microwave devices, accelerators and free electron lasers, high power tubes, electron and ion beams, microlithography, accelerators, and other plasma devices. Recent research has produced a new generation of gas-phase plasma switches that are characterized by very high current emission and conduction while operating in a glow mode. These switches include the pseudospark and the BLT, both of which have hollow electrodes, switch over 10 to 100 kA peak current, and have cathodes with emission ~ 2 2 10,000 Ncm over ~ 1 cm area. The cathode properties are especially remarkable - about 2 orders of magnitude larger emission than existing thermionic cathodes. Part of the meeting was devoted to understanding these properties, and exploiting applications of this cathode. The remarkable properties of these switches are very surprising in the light of considerable previous work in this area, and these results deserve study in order to understand the underlying physical mechanisms, and to develop ideas and insight into future applications, and foster coherent research in this area. To date, a number of good textbooks on general solid state physics have been written. However, research in solid state physics has become highly specialized and undertaken in narrow fields. There is thus a great need for elementary textbooks that deal in detail with the study of solids in a particular field in order to give students basic knowledge in that field. Metallic solids with an impurity, generally called alloys, are of immense importance from both fundamental and technological points of view. The pioneering work of Bloember gen and Rowland (1953) gave considerable impetus to the study of the electronic structure of metallic alloys. Serious theoretical study in this field started in 1960 and, during the last two decades, considerable success in understanding the electronic structure of simple metal alloys has been achieved. Nonetheless the theoretical study of dilute alloys of transition metals is still in its infancy. At present there are few review articles and original research papers that examine the role of an impurity with respect to the electronic structure and properties of metallic alloys. The enigmas encompass the natural habitat of the etiologic agent, extent of exposure and subclinical infections in endemic areas, distribution of en demic foci throughout the world, inconsistency of serologic evaluation of infected patients, and varying response of such patients to standard treat ment regimens. In spite of diligent investigations by many competent investigators, we still do not know the ecological niche inhabited by the etiologic agent. We have many tantalizing clues but no definite answers. Nor do we know the extent of the endemic areas in the world for this disease. Skin testing, so useful in defining the distribution of histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis, has been of no value in mapping endemic areas for blastomycosis. Even the serologic evaluation of known cases of the disease has been too erratic in results to be useful as a diagnostic or prognostic procedure. The enigmas of blastomycosis go straight to the disease itself. There is an extensive literature on the debate concerning the presence and extent of subclinical infections. Case report series demonstrate that such transient infections do occur but, unlike other mycoses, the extent to which this phe nomenon is common in the general population still cannot be assessed. It is astounding to observe how recently researchers are addressing the issue of NO, namely, nitric oxide, in over fifty publications weekly. Science journal, while naming nitric oxide: 'Molecule of the Year' (December 1992), said it all: 'NO news is good news. ' For a long period of time NO was considered as a pollutant and every ecology minded person tried to eliminate it. The other one, the so-called dynamical theory, is applicable to perfect or nearly perfect crystals. The only condition, readily agreed upon, was that such a book should focus on the immunology of infections in humans. Our reasons, if not biases, were severalfold. We sensed that the fields of microbiology and im munology, which had diverged as each was focusing on its individual search, were coming together. In agreement with the opinions expressed by Dr. Richard Krause in the Introduction, we strongly believed that the development of the immune system evolved in response to infectious agents and that the evolution of these agents was influenced in turn by the character of the host's responses. An inten sive examination of the multitude of primitive or more recently developed host defense mechanisms to determine their relative contribution to man's resistance to a given infectious agent appeared to us to be of crucial basic and practical interest. This was the first Scottish Summer School to be devoted to plasma physics, the exact title for the School being the Physics of Hot Plasmas. Forty-three students were accepted, fourteen of these being resident in the United Kingdom. In addition there were eleven lecturers and seven other participants. The choice of lecturers, particularly in experimental plasma physics, was limited to some extent by the fact that an international conference on con trolled fusion was held at Novosibirsk during the first week in August. Not withstanding this, it was possible to arrange a programme of lectures reasonably well balanced between theoretical and experimental plasma physics. The topics chosen included kinetic theory, waves and oscillations, instabilities, turbulence, collisionless shocks, computational methods, laser scattering and laser generated plasmas, plasma production and containment. Reliable analyses are needed in the fractional parts-per million range of contaminants in condensed phases, and of the order of micrograms per cubic meter in air. Trying to get meaningful answers regarding such minute amounts raises cogent problems in all stages of an analysis. It is most appropriate, therefore, that the 1971 Eastern Analytical Symposium should have four half-day sessions devoted to this general field. Two of these, entitled 'Trace Metals in the Envi ronment,' were assembled by Dr. Kneip, one on 'Pesticides in the Environment: Recently Discovered Analytical Problems,' by Dr. Zweig, and one on 'The Determination of Anions in Water,' by Dr. Lambert. Together, these reports furnish a fairly complete picture of the present state of environmental anal ysis. The remainder of this volume is devoted to pharmaceutical analysis, a diversified field in which nearly all analytical methods find a place. Partly because of this multiplicity of techniques, and partly due to the large number of samples which must be examined in connection with the manu facture, biological testing, and clinical applica tion of pharmaceutical preparations, this area is particularly appropriate for the introduction of automation. The urge for this Workshop was justified by the impressive growth of work dealing with this subject during the last two or three years. Indeed, thanks to recent progresses of epitaxial growth techniques, such as Molecular Beam Epitaxy, it is now possible to realize semiconductor layers ( e.g. GaAs) with thicknesses controlled within one atomic layer, sandwiched between insulating layers (e.g. AlGaAs). When the semiconducting layer is very thin, i.e. less than 15 nm, the energy of the carriers corresponding to their motion perpendicular to these layers is quantized, forming subbands of allowed energies. Because of the low effective masses in these semiconducting materials, the oscillator strengths corresponding to intersubband transitions are extremely large and quantum optical effects become giant in the 5 - 20 ~ range: photoionization, optical nonlinearities, . Moreover, a great theoretical surprise is that - thanks to the robustness of the effective mass theory - these quantum wells are a real life materialization of our old text book one-dimensional quantum well ideal. In general, the permeation equations resulting from these models give inaccurate predictions of the mutual effects of the permeants involved, due to the simplifications adopted in their derivation. It is concluded that an optimum description of transport phenomena in tight (diffusion-type) membranes is achieved with the 'solution-diffusion' model. According to this model each component of a fluid mixture to be separated dissolves in the membrane and passes through by diffusion in response to its gradient in the chemical potential. A modified Flory-Huggins equation has been derived to calculate the solubility of the permeants in the membrane material. Contrary to the original Flory-Huggins equation, the modified equation accounts for the large effect on solubility of crystallinity and elastic strain of the polymer chains by swelling. The equilibrium sorption of liquids computed with this equation was found to be in good agreement with experimental results. Also, the sorption of gases in both rubbery and glassy polymers could be described quan titatively with the modified Flory-Huggins equation without any need of the arbitrary Langmuir term, as required in the conventional 'dual-mode' sorption model.
