Here 'analysis' means the construction of images of objects and the measurement of their physical characteristics by recording and measur ing the wavefronts scattered by these objects. The 'synthesis' is the reconstruc tion of a wavefront of an object which is specified numerically. Problems involving the analysis and synthesis of wave fronts arise frequently in modem science and engineering. These are the problems encountered in the use of electromagnetic and sound waves to peer into the interior of various objects, the problems of the visual display of information in general, and the problems of measuring the characteristics of radiating systems, devising optical apparatus for signal processing, and developing hybrid electrooptic computer systems. Solutions are being sought for these problems through research in holography. The use of digital computers to analyze and synthesize wavefronts is an alternative to the analog methods, which include the methods of physical holography. The digital approach potentially has the advantages which are inherent in the digital technique for signal processing: the processing is highly accurate and absolutely reproducible; the characteristics of the processing or the processing algorithm itself can be changed in a simple way; complicated nonlinear and logic conversions can be carried out; the results are accessible; and it is easy to modify the process at any stage. This Symposium was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation and the Technical Measurement Corporation, and was devoted to principles, techniques, and applications of the Mossbauer effect. The Symposium was held at the Sheraton-Atlantic Hotel in New York City on january 26, 1965. Dr. Stanley Ruby, of Argonne National Laboratory, was Chairman of the aU-day session. About 250 people attended the Symposium, and interest appeared sufficient to warrant continuation of this Symposium series. It is hoped that future Symposia can be organized which will serve as a forum for presentation of advances in methodology. The papers presented in this volume review the current status of applications, describe instrument systems used, elu cidate measurement techniques applied, and formulate means of creating required environments for use in Mossbauer effect studies. With the proliferation of applications of the Mos sbauer effect in physics, as well as in chemistry and biology, the need for complete description of transducer systems, detection and data handling methods, and environment modification techniques be came apparent. The body of such experience, developed and possessed by a relatively small group of physicists, primarily, has not been readily accessible to those in other fields. Gamburtsev and developed under his guid ance during the period 1948-1955 at the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. During that period also, the first geophysical results concerning the deep structure of the earth's crust in several regions in Tien-Shan, the Pamir, and Turkmenia were observed. Beginning with 1956, the deep seismic sounding method has been used widely by geo physical research groups as well as by geophysical service organizations for regional studies in the USSR. Descriptions of this work have been given in reports by Yu. N. Godin, V. V. Fedynskii, D. N. Kazanli, and others. New variants of the deep seismic sounding method have been developed; continuous profiling (Yu. N. Godin, and others), and point soundings (N. N. Puzyrev, and others). Deep seismic soundings have been carried on outside of Russia also, and studies have been carried out on the use of the deep seismic sounding method in marine applications (E. I. Gal'perin, S. M. Zverev, 1. P. Kosminskaya, Yu. P. Neprochnov, and others). This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the 'Ettore Majorana' Centre for Scientific Culture. The objective of the Institute was to formulate a comprehensive treatment of the various processes by which molecules and crystals in excited electronic levels relax nonradiatively to the ground level. A total of 83 participants came from 62 laboratories and 22 nations (Australia, Belgium, Brasil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, F. R. Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, and U.S.S.R.). The secretaries of the Institute were: Velda Goldberg for the scientific aspects and Antonino La Francesca for the administrative aspects of the meeting. Eleven series of lectures for a total of 36 hours were given. Nine 'long' seminars and 7 'short' seminars were also presented. It continues to present first-hand understanding and experience of this difficult and demanding field. There is ever present the trade-off or reconciliation between the novel chemistry of systems not dominated by the mediating influence of a supposedly indifferent solvent and the high temperatures required to effect the fluidity of the system. At the limit, the very high temperatures so increase the rates of all reactions as to dissolve the temporal difference between the thermodynamic and the kinetic view of chemistry. What can happen will happen and invariably does happen. Vessels corrode, the apparatus becomes a reactant, and the number of tolerant materials able to withstand the attack shrinks to graphite, boron carbide or, if all else fails, to frozen parts of the molten salt itself. It is probably true that there is no limit to man's ingenuity but I believe that God gave us molten salts just to test that thesis. If there is ever a Molten Salt Club, and Englishmen love clubs, its membership will be exclusive. It would certainly include the authors of this series.
