The…emergence of new stereotactic methodologies such as frameless stereotaxy and other forms of neuronavigation have become an indispensable tool for all types of neurosurgical operations. An increasing number of young neurosurgeons takes an interest in the neurosurgical approaches to the treatment of movement disorders, chronic pain and epilepsy. This is a clear sign ofthe growing awareness of the long neglected fact that these neurosurgical treatments can be offered to large patient populations. Neurotransplantation as a novel treatment of Parkinson's disease has paved the way for the application of this technology for other indications. The pioneering work performed by the late Edward Hitchcock is reviewed here. There is a renewed interest in pallidotomy for dealing with certain forms of Parkinson's disease and certain aspects of this operation are discussed in another paper. Progress in the neurosurgical treatment of pain is dealt with by contributions on refined techniques of percutaneous cordotomy, DREZ operations and critical evaluations of spinal cord stimulation. A novel approach is a report on the experiences of treating cancer pain by intraspinal implantation of chromaffin cells. Several contributions cover the important issues of novel techniques for the study of neural dysfunction, peroperative monitoring with PET, microrecording, magneto-encephalography and other techniques. 156 pp. Englisch.

In this chapter, the author provides the reader with a comprehensive review of various data structures, including linear lists, array structures, tree structures, and multilinked structures. He also discusses the important problem of data-base design and management. This chapter concludes with several examples of information handling systems such as a matrix interpretive system, a generalized information management system, and a criminal justice information system. The rapid reduction in cost and great increase in capability of the mini computer have made it an attractive machine for information systems.

Dennoch ist es einseitig und recht vordergriindig, da dabei voll und ganz iibersehen wird, daB auch der Bereich des Emotionalen flir HusserI ein entscheiden gut wie nichts des Interessengebiet darstellt, wovon bislang so veroffentlicht worden ist. Wohl werden in seinen Schriften gclegentlich Fragen der Wertlehre, der Asthetik und Ethik angeschnitten 2, aber eine eingehende Auseinandersetzung mit derartigen Fragen liegt in keinem der veroffentlichten Werke vor. In order to make this useful information internation ally available, BG Chemie began in October 1990 to pub lish them as a book series in English, of which the sixth volume (containing 11 individual evaluations) is presented here. Therefore for 83 existing chemicals 'Toxicological Evaluations' are available in English at the moment, a fur ther 27 are in preparation and will be published soon.

These almost completely forgotten texts contained important insights…into the interpretation of quantum mechanics, and they provided several ideas which were missing or elusively expressed in SchrOdinger's published papers and books of the same period. However, they were likely to be misinterpreted out of their context. The problem was that current scholarship could not help very much the reader of these writings to figure out their significance. The few available studies about SchrOdinger's interpretation of quantum mechanics are generally excellent, but almost entirely restricted to the initial period 1925-1927. Very little work has been done on Schrodinger's late views on the theory he contributed to create and develop. The generally accepted view is that he never really recovered from his interpretative failure of 1926-1927, and that his late reflections (during the 1950's) are little more than an expression of his rising nostalgia for the lost ideal of picturing the world, not to say for some favourite traditional picture. But the content and style of Schrodinger's texts of the 1950's do not agree at all with this melancholic appraisal; they rather set the stage for a thorough renewal of accepted representations. In order to elucidate this paradox, I adopted several strategies.

Techniques were later devised for the isolation and purification of tightly bound membrane glycoproteins, where initial studies concentrated mainly on the erythrocyte, for which large amounts of a single cell population are available. Because of the structural complexity of nervous tissue and the large numbers, low concentrations, and membrane-bound form of many of its complex carbohydrates, progress has occurred more slowly in this area.

Therefore, it seems fully appropriate at this time that IFDC, as an international organization, take a leadership role in developing micronutrient fertilizer technology appropriate for the tropics and subtropics. The gravity of micronutrient deficiency as a limiting factor to crop pro duction varies from crop to crop and from soil to soil. The effects may range from slight yield reductions to complete crop failure. While the economic impact of omitting micronutrients in seriously affected areas (e.g., Zn in Brazilian Cerrado) is convincing, it is difficult to estimate the yearly loss in crop production due to unsuspected micronutrient deficiency. Active soil and crop testing programs in regions with advanced agricultural systems are aimed at recognizing micronutrients as a limiting plant nutrient in time to allow corrective measures and prevent yield loss. Successful micronutrient monitoring systems are generally limited to developed economies or to developing economies producing export cash crops.

Es stellte sich heraus, daB sie, weit iiber die Bemessung der Stiitzmauer, beim Entwurf jeder Tief baukonstruktion, b…ei jeder Griindung, bei jedem Tragfahigkeitsproblem usw. eine wesentliche und wichtige Rolle spielt. Das brachte mit sich, daB diese Theorien sich bedeutend entwickelten und verzweigten. Auf der heutigen Stufe der Wissenschaft erwies es sich daher als wiinschenswert, die Theorien, welchen der Ingenieur heute begegnet, kritisch zusammen zufassen und ihre theoretischen Grundlagen darzulegen. Bei der Abfassung dieses Buches habe ich dieses Ziel vor Augen gehalten. Aus der auBerordentlich reichen Literatur der Erddrucktheo rien konnten aber selbstredend nur jene Ergebnisse behandelt werden, die sowohl in theoretischer wie auch praktischer Hinsicht gleichfalls hervorzuheben sind. Vollstandigkeit habe ich nicht angestrebt - ich wollte dies auch nicht tun. Das Problem des Erddruckes auf biegsame Spundwande habe ich zum Beispiel nicht erwahnt, zumal die neueste deutsche Fachliteratur auf diesem Gebiet besonders reichhaltig ist. Der Leser wird im Buch alte und neue Erddrucktheorien und -methoden vor finden, die ich mit fachlicher Hingabe, mit viel Kopfzerbrechen, aber auch mit wahrer Freude beschrieben habe; ich trachtete danach, die Ansatze, die theoretischen Grundlagen in einfacher und iibersichtlicher Form zu bringen und den Anwendungsbereich iiberall klar a'Jzugrenzen. An einigen Stellen wurde bisher unveroffentlichtes Material wiedergegeben, In vielen Fallen beabsichtigte ich auch, die praktische Arbeit mit Hille von Tabellen und Diagrammen zu erleichtern.
