Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The evaluation of diabetic retinopathy is often difficult, because the clinical picture is complex due to the mUltiplicity of symptoms. Omission of treatment by photocoagulation at the right moment may have grave consequences. Forthe evaluation of diabetic retinopathy we have to estimate first the developmental degree of each symptom and secondly we have to estimate what the natural history of each particular retinopathy will be. There exists a number of classification systems, into the frame of which the clinical picture of diabetic retinopathy can be placed. Without entering into the details of these systems we want to mention that our classification has been developed from the method of Oakley and the classification model conceived at the Airlie House meeting in 1968. The essence of this classification is that standard pictures are used for the estimation of the developmental degree of the different symptoms in diabetic retinopathy. In our classification we use for each symptom two standard photographs instead of one, as originally proposed at the Airlie House meeting. (1,2). Standard photograph number one stands for the moderate (grade 1 ) manifestation and standard photograph numbertwo stands forthe marked (grade 2) manifestation of the symptom. Ifthe manifestation ofthe sympton is less marked than in standard photograph one, it is referred to as 2. 68 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This study is based upon the concept of nations with history and nations without history which was advanced in 1848/1849 in the pages of the Neue Rheinische Zeitung, a Cologne based German newspaper under the editorship of Karl Marx. This theory is presented in this study as a model of opposites; historic nations and non-historic nations, respec tively revolutionary nations and counter-revolutionary national groups which Engels and Marx associated with the philosophy of Hegel. As Marx and Engels saw it, Hegel had taught that nature and history abounded in opposites, and this was believed to be the essence of his dialectic. Marx liked this dialectic better than anything else in Hegel's thought and modified it to fit his own economic theory of history. In reality, however, there are no categories of opposites; certainly not in nature; no two colors are opposites; nor are any two times of the day, indeed nothing temporal, nothing living, nothing that is in process of becoming. ! It is only in human understanding that opposites are intro duced. In the history of ideas what has been a misunderstanding of Hegel's teachings has exerted a greater influence upon subsequent generations than Hegel's philosophy as he himself understood it. With Marx's development of the materialistic concept of history, the Volksgeist (Spirit of the Age), so pronounced in Hegel's work lost ground rapidly; first, because it was difficult to understand and second, because its mastery was hardly rewarding to anyone save scholars and philosophers. 148 pp. Englisch.

JEAN NORDMANN, Emeritus Professor of Strasbourg University, will celebrate his 80th anniversary. The task of paying tribute to Professor NORDMANN's many services to ophthalmology in a way worthy of the occasion is so difficult that we decided to concentrate on the focal point of his life's work. In this issue scientists engaged in lens research from allover the world offer reports of their latest findings together with their best wishes and felicitations as a birthday gift to the Nestor of lens research. They thereby express their gratitude to Professor NORDMANN, who, with the lifelong in defatigable enthusiasm of a scientist, has most successfully persued the prob lems of lens metabolism. It is our sincerest hope that we may look forward to many more years in which to take advantage of Professor NORDMANN's superior knowledge. Among the contributions to this festive donation we miss the works of some authors who have always held Professor NORDMANN's special inter est. The editor has received several letters of longstanding friends who would have liked to submit a manuscript but had been unable to meet the deadline: Professor NORDMANN may rest assured that they, too, belong to the great number of congratulators from our field of research. Conversely, picrotoxin had no effect on the depressive action of taurine on the ERG b-wave, but it antagonizes to some extent the depressive effect of GABA. These data, as well as those obtained through recording tectal evoked responses, lead to the conclusion that taurine and GABA do not act in the same way in retinal inhibitory synaptic transmission. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The thyroid gland first appears in the phylogenic scale in the Lamprey larva, Ammocoetes, at the time of metamorphosis (see review by Constantinescu, 1972). In higher Vertebrates the adult thyroid gland consists of vesicles i. e. thyroid follicles containing colloid and lined with a cubic or prismatic epithelium. Since the end of the 19th century, many authors have studied the morphoge nesis of the follicles during the embryonic and fetal development of the gland in Man and other species, principally Chick, Rat and Rabbit. The development of techniques for culturing organs of higher animals, in particular the thyroid by Carrel and Burrows (1910) and Champy (1914, 1915), allowed the study of the survival in vivo or in vitro of grafts or explants of thyroid gland obtained from adult or fetal animals. In addition to organotypic cultures, techniques for culturing cell suspensions obtained by enzymatic dissociation have recently been refined. Moreover, histological examination of pathological human glands and adult thyroids experimentally stimulated by thyrotropin hormone (TSH) has provided additional data for the understanding of thyroid follicle morphogenesis. 68 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -1. 1 Organization of the Immune System One of the most important survival mechanisms of vertebrates is their ability to recognize and respond to the onslaught of pathogenic microbes to which they are conti- ously exposed. The collection of host cells and molecules involved in this recognition 12 response function constitutes its immune system. In man, it comprises about 10 cells 20 (lymphocytes) and 10 molecules (immunoglobulins). Its ontogenic development is c- strained by the requirement that it be capable of responding to an almost limitless variety of molecular configurations on foreign substances, while simultaneously remaining inert to those on self components. It has thus evolved to discriminate, with exquisite precision, between molecular patterns. The foreign substances which induce a response, called antigens, are typically large molecules such as proteins and polysaccharides. The portions of these with which immunoglobulins interact are called epitopes or determinants. A typical protein epitope may consist of a configuration formed by the spatial arrangements of four or five amino acids and have an average linear dimension of about 20 A. 152 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Stochastic processes often pose the difficulty that, as soon as a model devi ates from the simplest kinds of assumptions, the differential equations obtained for the density and the generating functions become mathematically formidable. Worse still, one is very often led to equations which have no known solution and don't yield to standard analytical methods for differential equations. In the model considered here, one for tumor growth with an immunological re sponse from the normal tissue, a nonlinear term in the transition probability for the death of a tumor cell leads to the above-mentioned complications. Despite the mathematical disadvantages of this nonlinearity, we are able to consider a more sophisticated model biologically. Ultimately, in order to achieve a more realistic representation of a complicated phenomenon, it is necessary to examine mechanisms which allow the model to deviate from the more mathematically tractable linear format. Thus far, stochastic models for tumor growth have almost exclusively considered linear transition probabilities. 184 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -It is fifteen years since Walker and Straw wrote the first edition of 'Spectroscopy' and considerable developments have taken place during that time in all fields of this expanding subject. In atomic spectroscopy, for example, where the principles required in a student text have been laid down for many years, there have been advances in optical pumping and double resonance which cannot be neglected at undergraduate level. In addition, nuclear quadrupole resonance (n.q.f.) and far infrared spectroscopy now merit separate chapters while addtional chapters dealing with Mbssbauer spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and group theory are an essential requisite for any modern spectroscopy textbook. When the idea for a new edition of Spectroscopy was first discussed it quickly became clear that the task of revision would be an impossible one for two authors working alone. Consequently it was decided that the new edition be planned and co-ordinated by two editors who were to invite specialists, each of whom had experience of presenting their subject at an undergraduate level, to contribute a new chapter or to revise extensively an existing chapter. In this manner a proper perspective of each topic has been provided without any sacri fice of the essential character and unity of the first edition. The expansion of subject matter has necessitated the division of the complete work into three self contained volumes. Volume I includes atomic, n.m.f., n.q.f., e.s.r. and Mbssbauer spectroscopy. 336 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -An analysis of the particular topics in biological control programmes all over the world indicates an increased interest in the utilization of aphid parasites. Besides the so-called traditional biological control of introduced aphids, there appears a situation which could perhaps be called a renaissance of biocontrol, i. e. the utilization of biotic agents against insecticide-resistant populations of aphid pests. The rapid increase in the amount of information as well as the necessity of syntheti- cal papers are the well-known features in today's entomology. This requirement is much more topical in the groups where brief summarized information is needed for research workers in applied branches. The author has been well aware of all these difficulties and requirements owing to his own experience both in basic and applied research. Several years ago he decided to summarize our knowledge on the aphid parasites of the world by elaborating synthetical studies on the particular zoogeographical areas. These papers have been intended to represent annotated reviews of the parasite fauna, distribution, biologies and utilization in aphid pest management, with keys to genera and species, hos- parasite catalogue, and a list of references added. Naturally, these studies are only relatively updated, with respect to a certain deadline from which the research may be further continued. At present, the Far East Asian and the Mediterranean areas have been reviewed in this or at least in a similar manner. 104 pp. Englisch.

DEUTMAN, M.D. From October 16-18, 197 5 many distinguished ophthalmologists visited Nijmegen to inaugurate the new Eye Institute of the University of Nijmegen with a symposium on New Developments in Ophthalmology. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Netherlandish Ophthalmological Society (NOG) and had a high attendance of over 300 ophthalmologists from The Netherlands and from abroad. Many new and some controversial surgical techniques regarding corneal transplantation, phako-emulsification, intra-ocular lensimplantation, local excision of melanomas of the choroid and ciliary body, pars plana vitrec tomy, laser treatment in disciform macular degeneration and treatment of giant retinal tears were discussed. Since new surgical techniques have to be based on profound knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, many new basic and important data regarding the cornea, the vitreous body, the retinal vessels, the choroid and the orbit were presented by some of the foremost authorities. Technical advances in corneal transplantation were discussed, while the modern treatment of corneal ulcers and bacterial infections of the eye was presented. New findings such as computerized tomography, facilitate the diagnosis of underlying disease in exophthalmus enormously. The treatment of retinal detachment has improved considerably over the last ten years and we feel that in particular the safe non-drainage methods deserve attention. Cryo coagulation and photocoagulation have certain advances over diathermy and the radial placement of indenting suprascleral material may have consider able advantages over the limbus-parallel placement in horseshoe tears. 376 pp. Englisch.

With Marx's development of the materialistic concept of history, the Volksgeist (Spirit of the Age), so pronounced in Hegel's work lost ground rapidly; first, because it was difficult to understand and second, because its mastery was hardly rewarding to anyone save scholars and philosophers.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 148 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The evaluation of diabetic retinopathy is often difficult, because the clinical picture is complex due to the mUltiplicity of symptoms. Ifthe manifestation ofthe sympton is less marked than in standard photograph one, it is referred to asSpringer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 68 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The thyroid gland first appears in the phylogenic scale in the Lamprey larva, Ammocoetes, at the time of metamorphosis (see review by Constantinescu, 1972). Moreover, histological examination of pathological human glands and adult thyroids experimentally stimulated by thyrotropin hormone (TSH) has provided additional data for the understanding of thyroid follicle morphogenesis.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 68 pp. Englisch.
