Scientifically well-validated material must surely be the base upon which any viable musculoskeletal medicine practice may be built. For this reason our first innovation for the congress was to invite members of the scientific advisory committee to select for a 'directed' programme the three topics they felt were of greatest current importance. It was the intention of this symposium to bring together a respectable number of specialists in this field from the countries involved, complemented by a number of experts from outside the area chosen because of their recognised contributions to the main topics of the symposium. In this way, a platform for discussion and cooperation was provided to bring the specific problems of child nutrition in South East Asia closer to a solution. From the contents of the papers and also the valuable discus sions, it should be clear to the reader that the goal of this symposium has been attained. It would have been difficult to find a place which was better suited for this symposium than Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The excellent work done by the several local committees in organising this symposium is greatly acknowledged, especially the efforts of Prof. H. Iskandar Wahidiyat, Prof. Darwin Karyadi, Prof. I.G.N. The meeting began with review talks on magnetic phenomena near the solar photosphere, corona, and in stellar winds, since these nearby 'laboratories', studied for many years, provide much of the prior knowl edge of magnetic effects in astrophysical plasmas. The Symposium contained presentations of considerable new work concerning the role of magnetic fields in accretion disks, bipolar outflows, and related magnetic phenomena in molecular clouds and star forming regions. Both observa tions and related theory of the large-scale magnetic fields in the Milky Way were covered, in addition to a session on the more general theme of magnetohydrodynamics of galactic magnetic fields. Dynamo mechanisms were discussed in considerable detail. It was apparent that recent observational data on polarized emission from external galaxies are now of sufficiently high quality that meaningful tests of large-scale field amplification, and of ideas on the origin of galactic magnetic fields, can be undertaken. Both new observations and numerical simulation work were described in the context of active galaxy nuclei, supernova remnants, radio source jets and extended lobes, and also in the environment of galaxy clusters. Meeting this challenge was the principal motivation for the conference on 'Risk Assessment and Risk Management Strategies for Hazardous Waste Storage and Disposal Prob lems,' held at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania on May 18-19, 1988. The conference brought together representatives from the major interested parties - environmentalists, government, insurance, law, manufacturing, and the university community - who have been con cerned with the waste management process. The conference was the third cosponsored by the Wharton Center for Risk and Decision Processes addressing the knotty problem of hazardous waste. The first, held at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in 1985, examined the transportation, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. It suggested steps that industry, insurers, and gov ernment agencies could take to improve the safety and efficiency with which hazardous materials are produced and controlled in industrialized societies. This barrier must not be thought of as a single entity or as an absolute restriction to all molecules, but as a multiple structure located at several sites within the brain. The first of these interfaces is located at the endothelium of the brain capillaries. Secondly there is a potential site for interchange on the outer linings of the brain between the dura and the arachnoid membranes. Thirdly, there are the choroid plexuses and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which is in contact with the very permeable internal ependymal lining of the brain (Figure 1. 1). Finally there are areas of the brain which lack a blood-brain barrier. The workshop was the first occasion on which researchers from all the different disciplines concerned with the extracellular virulence factors of mucoid strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in relation to cystic fibrosis (CF) had met to discuss this multifaceted problem. It was deemed a particularly timely moment to gather together experts for the exchange of facts, ideas and hypotheses. No formal abstracts were presented and no proceedings were published. But during the succeed ing months the organizers were persuaded by a number of participants that a wider audience should benefit from what had proved to be such a fruitful cross-fertilization of expertise. Thus we moved from being workshop organizers to book editors, sure in the knowledge that at least we had a willing and enthusiastic set of contributors! It should be stressed, however, that this book is not a transcript of that workshop. Not all those participants are authors, and some new names have been added.
