Another important aspect is the current interest in organic farming, where use of synthetic chemicals is avoided or prohibited. Fortunately the inherent dexterity of the diver does not impact so severely on design as other intervention techniques. However the benefits of an integrated approach are still applicable and the use of such simple 'diver aids' as cutting guides and subsea markings installed prior to the installation of jackets and subsea equipment can have a significant impact on the cost of intervention. This paper examines the requirements and limitations in designing subsea equipment for Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) intervention. For the oil company embarking on the development of a diverless production system, be it totally diverless because of the envisaged water depth or primarily diverless with the possibility of diver back up, the intervention techniques adopted will strongly influence the final system design. The necessity to undertake an extensive development programme to produce the optimum intervention system is very costly, requires long lead times and comprehensive testing particularly where novel solutions are adopted. Dr. Arthur Bloomfield, Professor of Medicine, had selected my patient, a middle aged man, who was dying of acute pneumococcal pneumonia, as one of the first patients to receive miniscule doses (by today's standards) of his meagre supply of a new drug - penicillin. The patient's response amazed everyone especially this impressionable medical student. The rest of the story is history. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -In 1981 Dr Jean Lintermans published, with Dr van Dorp, a superb vol ume, 'Differential Diagnosis in Pediatric Echocardiography'. It was 'state of the art' with a unique organization, starting with M-mode echocardiograph ic findings rather than the disease category, and included a segmental approach to diagnosis, and concluded with an invaluable section on normal echocardiographic values. This volume was a great help to many of us in pediatric cardiology who were discovering the great clinical value of the noninvasive approach to diagnosis. This gave us a 'running start' for our own entry into the field. At that time, the 2 D or sector echocardiogram was finding increasing usefulness and there were several illustrations of this tech nique, integrated into that volume. Since 1980, the field of 2 D echocardiography has grown enormously in its usefulness, to the point that it has reduced the need for invasive studies, and has enhanced the precision of invasive studies when required. It is now time for a systematic and thorough approach to this field, and I am delighted that Jean Lintermans has provided us with this book. The pictures are uniformly superb and are very well labelled. The organization is cen tered around diagnostic categories, but the same attention to detail is pre sent that made the first volume so useful. The only criterion that has thus far successfully linearized the highly nonlinear crack growth data of concrete is the strain energy density theory. In particular, the crack growth resistance curves plotting the strain energy density factor versus crack growth known as the SR curves are straight lines as specimen size and loading steps or rates are altered. This allows the extrapolation of data and provides a useful design methodology. This book is unique in that it is devoted specifically to the application of the strain energy density theory to civil engineering structural members made of concrete. Analyzed in detail is the strain softening behavior of concrete for a variety of different components including the influence of steel reinforcement. Permanent damage of the material is accounted for each increment of loading by invoking the mechanism of elastic unloading. This assumption is justified in concrete structures where the effective stiffness depends primarily on the crack growth rate and load history. Crack growth data are presented in terms of SR-curves with emphases placed on scaling specimen size which alone can change the mode of failure from plastic collapse to brittle fracture. A common theme that runs through the papers by Herrera, Denslow et at. , and Stiles and White is the importance of the 'fruiting environment' (i. e. the spatial relationships of conspecific and non-conspecific fruiting plants) on rates of fruit removal and patterns of seed rain. The tradi tional roles of the police had been those of law enforcement and the maintenance of public order. Five of the contributions - those by Maling, Herslund, Cooper, Platzack and Thniinsson - are developments of papers read at this workshop, and all of the contributions reflect (and have partly inspired) the strong momentum which this area of research has gained over the last few years. Neuware -In the past two decades several activities in the field of water resources management have been enhanced and intensified. This . rise had at least two independent reasons. The first and main one was the constantly increasing water demand for agriculture and industry on one side and the concern about the deteriorating environment on the other. While this last concern was lately overshadowed by deterioration of national economies, the quantity of available water resources has certainly not increased with the growing scarcity of funds for its development and protection. Furthermore, the standard of living, which raised across the world, even in India and China, countries which concentrate more than a third of the world population, has made people and their governments more aware of natural disasters caused by weather. Since a large percentage of losses in human life and material damage from weather-related disasters are caused by water, either by its excess or scarcity, the concern about water has been increasingly associated with these disasters. The second reason for intensified water resources management is man's spectacular technological advance in electronics, computers and use of satellites. The Koran says that two things cannot be predicted: the sex of the child in its mother's womb and the quantity of water that falls from the sky and flows in rivers.
