Paperback. Zustand: New. 2024 ed. The Art of Cyber Warfare explores the strategic and tactical approaches for offense and defense in the digital age. Drawing on historical conflicts from Sun Tzu to Carl von Clausewitz, the author illustrates that, despite changed conditions such as time, location, means, and resources - but not the laws of physics - it is possible to learn from past actions and reactions. The author aims to demonstrate in this book that, in reality, we have only transferred old methods into our current era but have forgotten to translate their reasons, effects, and the resulting lessons. For, as it has been for thousands of years, the reasons for human-created conflicts remain the same: wealth, fame, power, honor, or desire. Can we learn something from history for present and future (cyber) wars?
Paperback. Zustand: New. 1st ed. 2016. When the United States declared war on Germany in April 1917, it was woefully unprepared to wage a modern war. Whereas their European counterparts already had three years of experience in using code and cipher systems in the war, American cryptologists had to help in the building of a military intelligence unit from scratch. This book relates the personal experiences of one such character, providing a uniquely American perspective on the Great War. It is a story of spies, coded letters, plots to blow up ships and munitions plants, secret inks, arms smuggling, treason, and desperate battlefield messages. Yet it all begins with a college English professor and Chaucer scholar named John Mathews Manly. In 1927, John Manly wrote a series of articles on his service in the Code and Cipher Section (MI-8) of the U.S. Army's Military Intelligence Division (MID) during World War I. Published here for the first time, enhanced with references and annotations for additional context, these articles form the basis of an exciting exploration of American military intelligence and counter-espionage in 1917-1918. Illustrating the thoughts of prisoners of war, draftees, German spies, and ordinary Americans with secrets to hide, the messages deciphered by Manly provide a fascinating insight into the state of mind of a nation at war.

Will we really soon no longer be sitting behind the wheel of our own car, but will only be taken to our destination by driverless electric taxis? Should cities introduce car sharing? What role will electric scooters, cable cars or man-carrying drones play in the mobility systems of major cities? This book finally explains in a generally understandable way what is really behind buzzwords such as electric mobility, autonomous driving, digitalization and mobility services such as car sharing or ride-hailing, how far advanced these technologies are today, and above all in what relationships and dependencies they are to each other. In addition to the technical aspects, the legislative and social trends are also considered, which are important framework conditions that will have a decisive influence on the mobility of the future. From the contents- Mobility needs: Who wants to go where, when and why - and how will this change in the future?- Technological trends: electromobility, digitalization, autonomous driving - what will the vehicles of the future be capable of?- Car sharing, ride-hailing, e-scooters or public transport: What alternatives to the private car will there be in the future?- Politics and society: How will the framework conditions for mobility develop in the future?- Mobility in transition: What should we do to prepare for the future?

Paperback. Zustand: New. 2012 ed. This book is an attempt to demonstrate the analytical power of the holistic approach for understanding disasters. Six major earthquakes in Latin America are used as an example: the general idea is to place disasters in a broad social and regional context. Understanding disasters is a way of understanding the social system. The idea is to show that every major disaster is unique and different. Statistical methods may be useful for purposes of risk estimation but modern disasters are "systemic" and complex. In the chapter on the 2010 Chile earthquake we discuss the tsunami and why the system of tsunami alert did not work. The introductory chapter contains some basics of seismology (plate tectonics) and earthquake engineering. The 1985 Mexico earthquake describes why geology is important. Why was Mexico City founded in a lake? Technology must be adapted to the environment, not "imported" from possibly more advanced but different societies. The 1970 Peru earthquake is an example of disaster in a unique environment. Caracas 1967 takes us on a survey of different engineering solutions. And the 1960 Chile earthquake leads us on a retrospective survey--what has changed in Chile between the two major Chile earthquakes? A discussion on Charles Darwin's observations of the 1835 Chile earthquake provides a fitting summary.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. 1st ed. 2015. The world's foremost expert on pricing strategy shows how this mysterious process works and how to maximize value through pricing to company and customer. In all walks of life, we constantly make decisions about whether something is worth our money or our time, or try to convince others to part with their money or their time. Price is the place where value and money meet. From the global release of the latest electronic gadget to the bewildering gyrations of oil futures to markdowns at the bargain store, price is the most powerful and pervasive economic force in our day-to-day lives and one of the least understood. The recipe for successful pricing often sounds like an exotic cocktail, with equal parts psychology, economics, strategy, tools and incentives stirred up together, usually with just enough math to sour the taste. That leads managers to water down the drink with hunches and rules of thumb, or leave out the parts with which they don't feel comfortable. While this makes for a sweeter drink, it often lacks the punch to have an impact on the customer or on the business. It doesn't have to be that way, though, as Hermann Simon illustrates through dozens of stories collected over four decades in the trenches and behind the scenes. A world-renowned speaker on pricing and a trusted advisor to Fortune 500 executives, Simon's lifelong journey has taken him from rural farmers' markets, to a distinguished academic career, to a long second career as an entrepreneur and management consultant to companies large and small throughout the world. Along the way, he has learned from Nobel Prize winners and leading management gurus, and helped countless managers and executives use pricing as a way to create new markets, grow their businesses and gain a sustained competitive advantage. He also learned some tough personal lessons about value, how people perceive it, and how people profit from it.In this engaging and practical narrative, Simon leaves nothing out of the pricing cocktail, but still makes it go down smoothly and leaves you wanting to learn more and do more-as a consumer or as a business person. You will never look at pricing the same way again.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. 2012. Political progressives in Canada and the United States are deeply concerned by the manner in which their countries treat their poor. They are dismayed at the dismantling of the social welfare state, the weakening of public education systems and the grotesque and ever-growing inequality of wealth. To remedy this problem, citizens need to be more aware of how political ideology influences attitudes and actions, and they need to better comprehend the effects of hegemonic discourses in the corporate media and school curriculum. This book informs educators how to develop context-specific pedagogy that will help achieve a more enlightened citizenry and, as a result, a stronger democracy. Teaching about Hegemony: Race, Class and Democracy in the 21st Century promotes a progressive agenda for teaching that is rooted in critical pedagogy, it explains why ideological critique is necessary in raising political consciousness, it deconstructs white, middle-class hegemony in the formal school curriculum, and it examines corporate media and school curriculum as hegemonic devices. It also covers recent theory and research about race, class and democracy and how best to teach about these topics. Combining theory and sociological research with pedagogical approaches and classroom narratives, this book is fundamental for progressive educators interested in developing a politically conscious, progressive and active citizenry hungry for a stronger civil society.

Famous examples are the works created by the Arabs in the Alhambra and the paintings of the Dutch painter Maurits Escher. Mathematicians did not take up the subject intensively until the 19th century. In the process, the visualisation of mathematical relationships leads to very appealing images. Three approaches are described in this book.In Part I, it is shown that there are 17 principally different possibilities of tesselation of the plane, the so-called 'plane crystal groups'. Complementary to this, ideas of Harald Heesch are described, who showed how these theoretical results can be put into practice: He gave a catalogue of 28 procedures that one can use creatively oneself - following in the footsteps of Escher, so to speak - to create artistically sophisticated tesselation. In the corresponding investigations forthe complex plane in Part II, movements are replaced by bijective holomorphic mappings. This leads into the theory of groups of Möbius transformations: Kleinian groups, Schottky groups, etc. There are also interesting connections to hyperbolic geometry. Finally, in Part III, a third aspect of the subject is treated, the Penrose tesselation. This concerns results from the seventies, when easily describable and provably non-periodic parquetisations of the plane were given for the first time.

This volume explores the reorganisation of knowledge taking place in the course of Galileo's research process extending over a period of more than thirty years, pursued within a network of exchanges with his contemporaries, and documented by a vast collection of research notes. It has revealed the challenging objects that motivated and shaped Galileo's thinking and closely followed the knowledge reorganization engendered by theses challenges. It has thus turned out, for example, that the problem of reducing the properties of pendulum motion to the laws governing naturally accelerated motion on inclined planes was the mainspring for the formation of Galileo's comprehensive theory of naturally accelerated motion.

Our book introduces a method to evaluate the accuracy of trend estimation algorithms under conditions similar to those encountered in real time series processing. This method is based on Monte Carlo experiments with artificial time series numerically generated by an original algorithm. The second part of the book contains several automatic algorithms for trend estimation and time series partitioning. The source codes of the computer programs implementing these original automatic algorithms are given in the appendix and will be freely available on the web. The book contains clear statement of the conditions and the approximations under which the algorithms work, as well as the proper interpretation of their results. We illustrate the functioning of the analyzed algorithms by processing time series from astrophysics, finance, biophysics, and paleoclimatology. The numerical experiment method extensively used in our book is already in common use in computational and statistical physics.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. WILLEM H. BIRKENHA. GER This compact guide aims to define the current approach to hypertension in practice, with the focus on the individual whom the physician faces across his desk. In the population, blood pressures are distributed along a Gaussian type of curve, but with some tailing towards the upper range. A systolic blood pressure of 160 mmHg is commonly accepted as the upper limit of the normal range. For diastolic pressure, the gradings are much more detailed: borderline hypertension (90-94 mmHg, mild hypertension (95-104 mmHg), moderate hypertension (105-114 mmHg), and severe hypertension (115 mmHg and over). Despite its skewing to the right, the bell shape of the distribution curve of blood pressures implies that the milder elevations of blood pressure are the most common. Such pressures are observed in 15-20% of the population upon casual measurement. After rechecking - which is mandator- the prevalence of hypertension drops to some 5%, due to psychological and statistical factors. Even this modest segment of the population represents an important proportion in terms of future cardiovascular risk. It is an essential part of preventive and curative health care to identify these people; the more so, because some 40% of the excess risk has already been proven to be reversible by conventional antihypertensive treatment. Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1990.
