The other advantage of adding CT is that the transmission data obtained with the CT component is useful for attenuation correction of the emission data. This makes PET/CT 25%¿30% faster than PET alone with standard attenuation¿correction method, leading to higher patient throughput and a more comfortable examination, which typically lasts 30 minutes or less. With hybrid imaging, unique physiologic information bene ts from a precise to- graphic localization. Simultaneous evaluation of metabolic and anatomic information about normal and disease processes is needed to answer complex clinical questions and also raise the level of con dence of scan interpretation. It is always dif cult to consider three dimensions in the mind¿s eye and view the relationship of the viscera and fascial planes in transverse and vertical sections of the body¿s structure. Neuware -This book includes selected papers from the first International Conferences on Computer Vision Theory and Applications (VISAPP), and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications (GRAPP), jointly held in Setubal, Portugal, on February 25¿28, 2006. We received 314 paper submissions for both conferences, quite a high number for a first venue. We had contributions from 44 different countries covering all five continents, which confirms the success and global reach of the two conferences. After a rigorous double-blind review, a total of 116 submissions were accepted as full papers. From those, the Program Committee selected 27 for publication in this book, which were then revised by the authors. Special thanks are due to all contributors and referees, without whom this book would not have been possible. VISAPP/GRAPP 2006 included four invited keynote lectures, presented by internationally recognized researchers. The presentations represented an important contribution to increasing the overall quality of the conference. With little or no infrastructure to rely on, ER operatives have to make do with the tools they bring along. Of course, ER organizations build, invest in and do rely on infrastructure for their operations and this includes sophisticated stationary information technology. The systems used for dispatching ER units are a good example for this. While such systems are very important to support strategic planning and decision making, the e ects of emergency response work eventuallyhaveto be createdonsite.
