Requirements for safety and reliability - like other so-called non-functional requirements for computer-based systems - are often stated in imprecise and ambiguous terms, or not at all. Specifications focus on functional and technical aspects, with issues like safety covered only implicitly, or not addressed directly because they are felt to be obvious; unfortunately what is obvious to an end user or system user is progressively less so to others, to the extend that a software developer may not even be aware that safety is an issue. Therefore, there is a growing evidence for encouraging greater understanding of safety and reliability requirements issues, right across the spectrum from end user to software developer; not just in traditional safety-critical areas (e.g. nuclear, aerospace) but also acknowledging the need for such things as heart pacemakers and other medical and robotic systems to be highly dependable.

At IM'97 the two worlds of computer networks and telecommunications systems came to gether, each proposing a view to management that stems from their own paradigms. Each world made clear the need for end-to-end management and, therefore, each one stepped into the oth er's field. We feel that there is no winner but a mutual enrichment. The time is ripe for integra tion and it is likely that the next Conference will bear its fruit.

The new fibre optic technology offers an important tool for the advancement of basic research and the development of industrial applications. Astronom ical spectroscopy is a field of astronomy which has contributed much to the advancement of fundamental physics. The spectra of hot stars have been used to determine the well-known Balmer formula for the wavelength of hydrogen lines, in the late 19th century. Since then, spectroscopy has made enormous progress in stellar atmosphere studies, in kinematics, and in the detection of high redshifts in the Universe. The traditional techniques of obtaining wide-field spectroscopic data are based on slitless spectroscopy (objective prism). The IACR organizes two serie…s of international conferences each year, the EUROCRYPT meeting in Europe and CRWTO in the United States. The history of EUROCRYFT started 15 years ago in Germany with the Burg Feuerstein Workshop (see Springer LNCS 149 for the proceedings). It was due to Thomas Beth's initiative and hard work that the 76 participants from 14 countries gathered in Burg Feuerstein for the first open meeting in Europe devoted to modem cryptography. I am proud to have been one of the participants and still fondly remember my first encounters with some of the celebrities in cryptography. Since those early days the conference has been held in a different location in Europe each year (Udine, Paris, Linz, Linkoping, Amsterdam, Davos, Houthalen, Aarhus, Brighton, Balantonfiired, Lofthus, Perugia, Saint-Malo, Saragossa) and it has enjoyed a steady growth, Since the second conference (Udine, 1983) the IACR has been involved, since the Paris meeting in 1984, the name EUROCRYPT has been used. For its 15th anniversary, EUROCRYPT finally returned to Germany. The scientific program for EUROCRYPT '97 was put together by a 18-member program committee whch considered 104 high-quality submissions. These proceedings contain the revised versions of the 34 papers that were accepted for presentation. I freely admit that though the reading of some sections would benefit from previous experience of certain topics in… physics - particularly relativity and electromagnetism - generally the mathematics is not sophisticated. In fact, the mathematically sophisticated reader, may well find that in many places, the rather deliberate progress too slow for their liking. This text had its origin in a 90-minute lecture on complex numbers given by the author to prospective university students in 1994. In my attempt to develop a novel approach to the subject matter I looked at complex numbers from an entirely geometric perspective and, no doubt in line with innumerable other mathematicians, re-traced steps first taken by Hamilton and others in the early years of the nineteenth century. I even enquired into the possibility of using an alternative multiplication rule for complex numbers (in which argzlz2 = argzl- argz2) other than the one which is normally accepted (argzlz2 = argzl + argz2). Problems related to partial differential equations of order higher than one are so diverse that a general theory can hardly be…built up. There are several essentially different kinds of differential equations called elliptic, hyperbolic, and parabolic. Regarding the construction of solutions of Cauchy, mixed and boundary value problems, each kind of equation exhibits entirely different properties. Cauchy problems for hyperbolic equations and systems with variable coefficients have been studied in classical works of Petrovskii, Leret, Courant, Gording. Mixed problems for hyperbolic equations were considered by Vishik, Ladyzhenskaya, and that for general two dimensional equations were investigated by Bitsadze, Vishik, Gol'dberg, Ladyzhenskaya, Myshkis, and others. In last decade the theory of solvability on the whole of boundary value problems for nonlinear differential equations has received intensive development. Significant results for nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations of second order were obtained in works of Gvazava, Ladyzhenskaya, Nakhushev, Oleinik, Skripnik, and others. Clinically, constipation occurs when bowel move ments are difficult or painful. The 'normality' of bowel movements, in terms of frequency,… varies among individuals; frequency that is thought by one person to be constipation may be reported by another to be usual and thus normal. Often the perceived 'need' to have a bowel movement leads to self-treatment with laxatives as these drugs are widely available without a prescription. This situation can raise problems in patient care, because of potential interactions between laxatives and other medications. Furthermore, chronic use (abuse) oflaxatives can cause serious medical consequences, causing patients to visit physicians, and even to be hospitalized for further evaluation and care. This has a financial impact on the patient, and on health care systems. It is essential that pharmacists, physicians and other health care practitioners counsel patients on the causes of constipation and the proper use oflaxatives. A medical work-up by a physician should be done to determine if the constipation is due to a pathological process. Often nor mal bowel function (for an invididual) can be maintained by diet and/or lifestyle. Most laxatives in use today are of botanical origin. For this, Aristotelian syllogistic does not suffice: We require relational reasoning. George Boole, in his Mathematical Analysis of Logic of 1847, initiated the treatment of logic as part of mathematics, specifically as part of algebra. Quite the opposite conviction was put forward early this century by Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead in their Principia Mathematica (1910 - 1913): that mathematics was essentially grounded in logic. Logic thus developed in two streams. On the one hand algebraic logic, in which the calculus of relations played a particularly prominent part, was taken up from Boole by Charles Sanders Peirce, who wished to do for the 'calculus of relatives' what Boole had done for the calculus of sets. Peirce's work was in turn taken up by Schroder in his Algebra und Logik der Relative of 1895 (the third part of a massive work on the algebra of logic). Schroder's work, however, lay dormant for more than 40 years, until revived by Alfred Tarski in his seminal paper 'On the calculus of binary relations' of 1941 (actually his presidential address to the Association for Symbolic Logic). 292 pp. Englisch.

As an important beginning, the sociocultural aspects of the erect phallus were presented by G. Wagner from Copen hagen. The anatomy of the penis and the physiological con ditions of erection were then discussed by K. -P. J Unemann from Mannheim, Germany. Previous conferences on the penis had concentrated only on specific areas of disease such as impotence. However, it became readily apparent that at this conference something new for almost every as pect of disease would be discussed, including congenital disorders such as hypospadias and epispadias, sexually transmitted and noninfectious dermatological diseases, and congenital and acquired penile curvatures and penile fractures. An excellent presentation of managing penile cancer by stage related therapeutic decision was presented by S. C. MUller from Bonn, Germany. There is no better per son to present a discussion of Peyronie' s disease in 1996 from a historical and management perspective than J. Pryor from London, UK. This same degree of expertise was also demonstrated by I. Saenz de Tejada from Madrid, Spain, re garding priapism. 320 pp. Englisch.
