Besides the so-called traditional biological control of introduced aphids,… there appears a situation which could perhaps be called a renaissance of biocontrol, i. e. the utilization of biotic agents against insecticide-resistant populations of aphid pests. The rapid increase in the amount of information as well as the necessity of syntheti cal papers are the well-known features in today's entomology. This requirement is much more topical in the groups where brief summarized information is needed for research workers in applied branches. The author has been well aware of all these difficulties and requirements owing to his own experience both in basic and applied research. Several years ago he decided to summarize our knowledge on the aphid parasites of the world by elaborating synthetical studies on the particular zoogeographical areas. These papers have been intended to represent annotated reviews of the parasite fauna, distribution, biologies and utilization in aphid pest management, with keys to genera and species, hos- parasite catalogue, and a list of references added. Naturally, these studies are only relatively updated, with respect to a certain deadline from which the research may be further continued. At present, the Far East Asian and the Mediterranean areas have been reviewed in this or at least in a similar manner. 128 pp. Englisch.

With the exception of Yuri Tatarinov all the main pioneers in the field were present, and this book arose from…the discussions which took place. Each author was asked to bring a written man uscript corresponding to but not necessarily identical with their verbal presentation. Nobody was given a specified remit, for the reason that the subject is so new that it would be impossible to design the meeting or the book in advance. Each speaker was left free to put on display whatever he thought was interesting or important about the newly isolated proteins. Inevitably this has led to much overlap, since everybody tends to follow the same path at first. Nevertheless, we shall probably never achieve so much agreement again. Only Vernon Stevens was set a fixed title out side the immediate field of new placental proteins. This arose from the very exciting possibility that the new proteins could be used to induce an autoimmune state to products of conception and thus serve as the basis for a new method of contraception. There are few findings at present which bear specifically on this proposal, but the experience of Vernon Stevens with hCG could serve as a model of the problems that might be encountered with SP and PAPP-A. 188 pp. Englisch.

For reasons explained in the Introduction this turned out to be an impossib…le undertaking. What resulted was a self-contained new approach to the structuralist view, combined with an attempt to bring it up to date by including a report on the latest developments. As matters stand it would have been unreasonable and unfair of me to ask the editors of The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science to publish this text which exceeds by far the size of an average essay. Much of the responsibility for this state of affairs must rest with a system that tends to reward quantity rather than quality of publications, and on the resulting misap prehension that the aim of scientific research is the gathering of data rather than the advancement of knowledge. The sponsors of congresses and symposia who insist on a lasting record of their proceedings, the authors and editors who have no compunc tion about printing trivial or redundant information, and the publishing houses them selves, which can hardly be expected to favor restraint, also bear part of the respon sibility. One of the consequences of the information explosion is a change in our attitude towards new books. Whereas we used to welcome their appearance and to take them as useful and good until proven otherwise, we now greet them with suspicion and wonder even before opening them whether they were really necessary. Fortunately, some of them still are and perform a real service by taking an unwieldy mass of data dispersed in a variety of journals, and organizing it into a coherent synthesis of the state of knowledge in a given field. The chairman have done a tremendous job organizing an up to date scientific programme for the third Wilsede meet ing. Its projections to the auditory cortex have been studied extensively in the cat using retrograde cell degeneration and the Marchi tech…nique. The auditory cortex has also been defined electrophysiologically and cytoarchitecturally by many authors (Fig. 1). Woolsey and Walzl (1942) first defined the primary (AI) and secondary (All) auditory areas by electrical stimulation of cochlear nerve fibers. Later studies have dem onstrated other cortical areas responsive to auditory stimulation: the posterior ecto sylvian area (Ep), the suprasylvian fringe (SF), the third auditory'area (AlII) in the sec ond somatic sensory area (SII), the insular area (Ins) or the fourth auditory area (AIV), and the temporal area (Temp). Classic anatomic methods, such as the Marchi and retrograde cell degeneration methods, were not suitable for studying the precise organization of the cortical pro jections of MGB, however, the Nauta method has been useful in the study of these pro jections (Wilson and Cragg, 1969; Niimi and Naito, 1972, 1974; Sousa-Pinto, 1973). These studies indicated that parts of MGB send differential projections to individual auditory areas, although considerable overlap of the projections is seen. Furthermore, some authors showed that the pulvinar nuclear group also projects to the auditory cor tex (Graybiel, 1973; Niimi et aI. , 1974a; Rosenquist et aI. , 1974). 72 pp. Englisch.
