Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Today, one fundamental set of issues confronts both the linguistic theory of 'Universal Grammar' and the psychological study of human cognition. These issues concern the question of to what degree and how the human mind is 'programmed,' presumably biologically, to acquire the complex knowiedge of hu…man language. As discussed in Volume I, anaphora has been critical to this study because, while a critical property of language knowledge, it is largely underdetermined by available evidence. While most previous research projects have generally addressed these issues through either linguistic analyses or psychological analyses of language data, and have concerned themselves with either the role of innateness or the role of experience in language knowledge, this volume, with its predecessor, attempts to combine these approaches; in fact to develop a research paradigm for their joint study. While Volume I emphasized study of the content and nature of the initial state, i. e. , of the language faculty, this second volume emphasizes study of the way in which experience does or does not interact with this language faculty to determine language acquisition. We argue in the introduction that the issues addressed in Volume II are appreciable, if not necessary, com plements to those addressed in Volume I. This is not only because a more comprehensive model of language acquisition requires so, but because valid definition of the content of 'the initial state' may require so.

This notion permits treatment of control structures which involve not only the denotation of programs (i.e., their input/output behavior), but also their structure, size, run times, etc. The theory also treats the relation of control structure and complexity properties of programming languages. The book focuses on expressive interdependencies of control structures (which control structures can be expressed by which others). A general method of proving control structures expressively independent is developed. The book also considers characterizations of the expressive power of generalpurpose programming languages in terms of control structures. Each of these can further be subdivided into game theory and optimal control theory. The central problem of control theory is the so called constrained maximizat…ion (which- with slight modifications--is equivalent to minimization). One can then say, heuristically, that the major problem of control theory is to find the maximum of some performance criterion (or criteria), given a set of constraints. The starting point is, of course, a mathematical representation of the performance criterion (or criteria)- sometimes called the objective functional--along with the constraints. When the objective functional is single valued (Le. , when there is only one objective to be maximized), then one is dealing with optimal control theory. When more than one objective is involved, and the objectives are generally incompatible, then one is dealing with game theory. The first paper deals with stochastic optimal control, using the dynamic programming approach. The next two papers deal with deterministic optimal control, and the final two deal with applications of game theory to ecological problems. In his contribution, Dr. Marc Mangel applies the dynamic proQramming approach, as modified by his recent work--with Dr. Colin Clark, from the University of British Columbia (Mangel and Clark 1987}\*--to modelling the 'behavioral decisions' of insects. The objective functional is a measure of fitness. Readers interested in detailed development of the subject matter may consult Mangel (1985). This, then, is the object of the present book, which will recon sider the newer concerns about scientific realism in the context of these older philosophical themes. Historically, realism concerns itself with the real existence of things that do not 'meet the eye' - with suprasensible entities that lie beyond the reach of human perception. In medieval times, discussions about realism focused upon universals. Recognizing that there are physical objects such as cats and triangular objects and red tomatoes, the medievels debated whether such 'abstract objects' as cathood and triangularity and redness also exist by way of having a reality indepen dent of the concretely real things that exhibit them. Three fundamen tally different positions were defended: (1) Nominalism. Abstracta have no independent existence as such: they only 'exist' in and through the objects that exhibit them. Only particulars (individual substances) exist. Abstract 'objects' are existents in name only, mere thought fictions by whose means we address concrete particular things. (2) Realism. Over the past nine or ten years a new member has been added to this inquisitive family, one which, moreover, claims to be scientific to an extremely high degree: biology. This is in fact a recurrent event, since theses designed to introduce causal biological expla nations into the general field of human action had already been formulated on at least two occasions (in original Darwinism and the Neo-Darwinist synthesis). Each of these can further be subdivided into game theory and optimal control theory. The central problem of control theory is the so called constrained maximization…(which- with slight modifications--is equivalent to minimization). One can then say, heuristically, that the major problem of control theory is to find the maximum of some performance criterion (or criteria), given a set of constraints. The starting point is, of course, a mathematical representation of the performance criterion (or criteria)- sometimes called the objective functional--along with the constraints. When the objective functional is single valued (Le. , when there is only one objective to be maximized), then one is dealing with optimal control theory. When more than one objective is involved, and the objectives are generally incompatible, then one is dealing with game theory. The first paper deals with stochastic optimal control, using the dynamic programming approach. The next two papers deal with deterministic optimal control, and the final two deal with applications of game theory to ecological problems. In his contribution, Dr. Marc Mangel applies the dynamic proQramming approach, as modified by his recent work--with Dr. Colin Clark, from the University of British Columbia (Mangel and Clark 1987}\*--to modelling the 'behavioral decisions' of insects. The objective functional is a measure of fitness. Readers interested in detailed development of the subject matter may consult Mangel (1985). Neuware -The increasingly lively controversy over scientific realism has become one of the principal themes of recent philosophy. 1 In watching this controversy unfold in the rather technical way currently in vogue, it has seemed to me that it wou…ld be useful to view these contemporary disputes against the background of such older epistemological issues as fallibilism, scepticism, relativism, and the traditional realism/idealism debate. This, then, is the object of the present book, which will recon sider the newer concerns about scientific realism in the context of these older philosophical themes. Historically, realism concerns itself with the real existence of things that do not 'meet the eye' - with suprasensible entities that lie beyond the reach of human perception. In medieval times, discussions about realism focused upon universals. Recognizing that there are physical objects such as cats and triangular objects and red tomatoes, the medievels debated whether such 'abstract objects' as cathood and triangularity and redness also exist by way of having a reality indepen dent of the concretely real things that exhibit them. Three fundamen tally different positions were defended: (1) Nominalism. Abstracta have no independent existence as such: they only 'exist' in and through the objects that exhibit them. Only particulars (individual substances) exist. Abstract 'objects' are existents in name only, mere thought fictions by whose means we address concrete particular things. (2) Realism.
