Thanks to advances in digital spectroscopy, new types of pulsating B stars have been discovered. The p…ulsations can be understood in terms of the recent revision of metal opacities, but the effects of rapid rotation and magnetic fields need further study. Observations in the UV and X-ray regions demonstrate that many B and Be stars show other activity, besides pulsation which is not yet understood. The reason for the enhanced mass loss in Be stars is a question which dominates the Symposium and which remains unanswered, although it is surely to be found in activity at or near the photosphere coupled with rotation. It is shown that the geometry of the circumstellar envelopes around Be stars is indeed a flattened disk as they can now be optically resolved. The variability of radiatively-driven winds from O and B stars are likely related to the rotation of the star. This underlines the central theme of the book: that the various phenomena seen in these stars cannot be studied in isolation.

Three technical domains are to be seen: applications to random quadratic forms (sums of squares), the investiga…tion of algebraic simplifications of maxi mum likelihood estimation of patterned covariance matrices, and a more wide open mathematical exploration of the algebraic arena from which I have drawn the results used in the statistical problems just mentioned. Chapters 1, 2, and 4 present the statistical outcomes I have developed using the algebraic results that appear, for the most part, in Chapter 3. As a less daunting, yet quite efficient, point of entry into this material, one avoiding most of the abstract algebraic issues, the reader may use the first half of Chapter 4. Here I present a streamlined, but still fully rigorous, definition of a Jordan algebra (as it is used in that chapter) and its essential properties. These facts are then immediately applied to simplifying the M:-step of the EM algorithm for multivariate normal covariance matrix estimation, in the presence of linear constraints, and data missing completely at random. The results presented essentially resolve a practical statistical quest begun by Rubin and Szatrowski [1982], and continued, sometimes implicitly, by many others. After this, one could then return to Chapters 1 and 2 to see how I have attempted to generalize the work of Cochran, Rao, Mitra, and others, on important and useful properties of sums of squares. 116 pp. Englisch.

Second, several colleagues have been kind enough to suggest that this book not only has a contribution to ma…ke to ecological economics, but also has relevance to economics general. Thus our OUf distinction distinction between between genotypic genotypic and phenotypic evolution may be used to characterise not only economic sectors, but also whole economies, and in particular economic schools of thought. For instance, the Austrian subjectivist school deals explicitly with ignorance and the emergence of novelty, and may therefore be used to analyse genotypic development. In contrast, neoclassical economics deals principally with phenotypic development. When Dr. Müller Muller of Springer-Verlag suggested the production of a second edition, we were therefore pleased that this book might remain available. Several readers and in particular reviewers of the first edition remarked, in one way or the other, that they had questions concerning several of our OUf concepts, concepts, such as genotype, phenotype, ignorance, surprise, sUlprise, novelty, novelty, knowledge, knowledge, predictable predictable and unpredictable processes etc. Of course, all these concepts are of importance for evolution in general and for invention and innovation of new techniques in particular. From the point of view of the biological ecologist struggling to understand the enormous complexity of the biological functions within an ecosystem, the added necessity of integrating biology with geochemis try, hydrology, micrometeorology, geomorphology, pedology, and applied sciences (like silviculture and land use management) often has appeared as an impossible requirement. Ecologists have frequently responded by limiting their perspective to biology with the result that the modeling of species interactions is sometimes considered as modeling ecosystems, or modeling the living fraction of the ecosystems is considered as modeling whole ecosystems. Such of course is not the case, since understanding the structure and function of ecosystems requires sound understanding of inanimate as well as animate processes and often neither can be under stood without the other. About 15 years ago, a view of ecology somewhat different from most then prevailing, coupled with a strong dose of naivete and a sense of exploration, lead us to believe that consideration of the inanimate side of ecosystem function rather than being just one more annoying complexity might provide exceptional advantages in the study of ecosystems. I used to go for ice cream to a popular place near the Pantheon and I remem ber the excitement I felt, beyond the chocolate and whipped cream, when I entered this ancient Roman te…mple. After staring at the 'shower' of light coming from the circular opening at the center of the dome, as strong as a spotlight, I remember being attracted almost hypnotically to the place below the opening. I remember counting the coffers carving the concave dome, com posed in five rows of circular arrays, and could feel the power and protection created by the concave space. I also recall going every Sunday to Piazza San Pietro. This Baroque square is well known for its colonnades, which have an oval shape defined by two interlocking circles. For each of these circles there is a mark, located approximately at its center, from which the four aligned rows of columns appear as one. Before entering the church, almost as a part of a ritual, I had to find the mark in the pavement of the oval square. I was amazed by how the rows of columns could appear and disappear according to my position in relation to the mark. 396 pp. Englisch.

When the phase S(x) is real (ImS(x) = 0), the method for obtaining asymp totics of this type is known in quantum mechanics as the WKB-method. We preserve this terminology in the case ImS(x) ~ 0 and develop the method for a wide class of problems in mathematical physics. Asymptotics of this type were constructed recently for many linear prob lems of mathematical physics; certain specific formulas were obtained by differ ent methods (V. M. Babich [5 -7], V. P. Lazutkin [76], A. A. Sokolov, 1. M. Ter nov [113], J. Schwinger [107, 108], E. J. Heller [53], G. A. Hagedorn [50, 51], V. N. Bayer, V. M. Katkov [21], N. A. Chernikov [35] and others). However, a general (Hamiltonian) formalism for obtaining asymptotics of this type is clearly required; this state of affairs is expressed both in recent mathematical and physical literature. It did this by exposing the mathematical structure of geometry, and by providing the tools to analyse it. This is typical of the way algebra is applied; it is the best and purest form of application because it reveals the simplest and most universal mathematical structures. The present book aims to foster a proper appreciation of algebra by showing abstraction at work on concrete problems, the classical problems of construction by straightedge and compass. These problems originated in the time of Euclid, when geometry and number theory were paramount, and were not solved until th the 19 century, with the advent of abstract algebra. As we now know, alge bra brings about a unification of geometry, number theory and indeed most branches of mathematics.
