The meeting was organized to discuss present knowledge on structure and function of the cardiac specialized tissues with emphasis on their clinical implications. Since much new information was presented, the participants agreed to prepare manuscripts and make their material available for publication. This has resulted in a book in which the cardiac specialized tissues are discussed by different specialists: the electron-microscopist, anatomist, pathologist, physiologist, physicist and clinician. Apart from their interest in the cardiac conduction system the participants shared the opinion that their contribu tion should be relevant to the understanding and treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. The book should be useful for the clinician, the morphologist and the physio logist. The workshop took place at the University Department of Cardiology, Wilhelmina Gasthuis, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This is the home ground of one of the most outstanding electro cardiologists of our time, Dr. Dirk Durrer. By pairing genius and originality with endless fund of energy and dogged persistence he made several important contributions to modern cardiac electrophysiology. In recent years he created a cardio logical institute where workers from various disciplines cooperate in the study and treat ment of cardiac disease. The papers that follow deal with problems OIf Galileo's philosophy of science, specific and general problems connected with his methodology, and with historical and conceptual questions concerning the relationship of his work to that of contemporaries and both earlier and later scientists. New perspectives take many forms. In this book the 'newness' has, for the most part, two forms. First, in the papers by Wisan, Shea, Le Grand and Wallace (the concerns will also appear in some of the other contributions), greatly enriched historical discoveries of how Galileo's science and its method ology developed are provided. The main purpose of these studies is the determination of the sulphur bond configuration and the conformational properties. This leads to the observation and correlation of characteristic structural variations as various ligands are attached to the S02 group and as comparisons are made with related molecules. Today it may be said that the structure of sulphone molecules is relatively well studied, and it appeared necessary to systematize the accumulated experimental data after critical considerations. This is done in the first part of this monograph. The second part presents the observed characteristic structural variations. Attempts are made to interpret these variations by valence shell electron pair repulsions and-non-bonded interactions. Correlation relationships between geometric and vibrational parameters are also presented. It is the metrical aspects of the molecular structure which are primarily considered. Since they correlate with other aspects of the molecular structure, e.g. electronic, it is hoped that the experimental information on the molecular geometry provides stim ulus for further experimental, and, in particular, theoretical work on sulphones and related systems. IV It is attempted to cover all electron diffraction and micro wave spectroscopic investigations on sulphone molecules to date. This is discussed extensively in this monograph, as are the mechanisms involved in regression of lesions. Whether human atherosclerosis has the potential for regression appears to be the most important, but at the same time the most difficult question to answer. Contrary to experimental atherosclerosis in animals, which can be produced and which can regress within a few months, human lesions in general develop slowly over many years. Therefore, measures aimed at modifying this process may also require many years to be successful. In addition, repeated direct examination of lesions in the human is usually not possible. Nevertheless, recent reports in patients with hyperlipoproteinemias indicate that pronounced and maintained control of hyperlipidemias may lead, even within months, to regression as evidenced by angiography or sophisticated measurements of peripheral circulation. The monograph is divided into two sections. The first will deal with of lipid deposition in the arterial wall, whether 'atherogenesis': mechanisms or not there is evidence of monoclonal origin of human atherosclerosis plaques, cell culture and factors that stimulate smooth muscle proliferation, and animal models of atherogenesis.
