Accordingly this edition of the book had something to say about walls from micro-organisms and plants as well as about membranes from bacteria and animal cells. A decade later this is manifestly impossible. Knowledge about almost all the subjects has grown explosively, par ticularly about membranes and the biosynthesis of macromolecules. Moreover aspects of the subject that were still in a relatively primitive state ten years ago have grown into highly sophisticated subjects worthy of extended treatment. The result is that the present book has had to be confined to structures and functions relating to only one division of the biological kingdom, namely micro-organisms. Even then severe limitations have had to be made to keep the task within the time available to the authors and their expertise. A few of the titles of chapters such as those on the isolation of walls and membranes, the structure of the components of bacterial and micro-fungal walls and their biosynthesis remain from the earlier book. These chapters have been almost completely rewritten and a number of quite new chapters added on topics such as the action of the antibiotics that inhibit bacterial wall syn thesis, on the function of bacterial membranes, and the bacterial autolysins.…

Neuware -The Buccaneer Gas and Oil Field Study has been the most comprehensive research project to date concerned with assessing the ecological effects of offshore production activities. It took nearly five years to complete and involved almost 30 individual research groups. All of the raw data have been archived with NOAA's Environmental Data and Information Services, and detailed technical reports have been deposited with the National Technical Information Service so the interested investigator should be able to gain access to them. However, we felt that it would be desirable to present a distillation of our more significant findings in a form that was more readily available to the scientific and lay community. Thus, we conducted a symposium. on the study during EXPOCHEM '80 at the Astrohall, Houston, Texas during October, 1980. This volume comprises the proceedings of that symposium. All but two of the papers presented are included in this book. Manuscripts were not received from Dr. D. A. Wiesenburg (Texas A&M University: Volatile Hydrocarbons) or Dr. J. Tillery (Southwest Research Institute: Trace Metals), but these topics are adequately covered by other authors. An introductory chapter was added to place the study in its proper perspective and to provide some background material on the Buccaneer Field, a brief chapter on biocides was inserted since this topic generated much dis cussion at the symposium, and a bibliography is provided to direct the interested reader to sources of additional published infor mation on the Study.…

Neuware - This volume presents the proceedings of the Second International Sym posium on Acoustical Holography, which was held at the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories on 6 and 7 March 1969, fifteen months after the first symposium. Space was limited to about 110 seats, with representatives from nine countries attending. These countries included Canada, England, France, Japan, Mexico, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The symposium consisted of 21 formal papers. The twenty second, by Dr. U. Fehr, was not read, but is included in these proceedings. The manu script of the interesting paper on acoustic propagation in a turbulent medium which was read by Dr. O. K. Mawardi was not received in time for publication in these proceedings, and we look forward to its publication perhaps at a later date in the open literature. In addition to the formal papers there were three informal presentations at the end of the meeting which were given by Dr. A. Lohmann, by L. A. Cram and K. O. Rossiter, and by T. S. Graham, which are also included in these proceedings. At the end of the formal presentations Dr. Lewis Larmore summarized the symposium and discussed some of the highlights. Haspe/s It is with pleasure that I welcome you, on behalf of Professor Rolland and myself, to Amsterdam for this International Symposium on 'Benefits and Risks of Hormonal Contraception'. As a means offamily planning the pill is about 25 years old - a timespan which has been characterized by an enormous increase in public interest and concern with family health and family-planning. Undoubtedly we have learned a lot over the last 25 years. As you see in Figure 1, in the seventies in Holland relatively more fertile women used the pill than in any other country in the world. In 1974 new combination pills were introduced containing less than 50 JAg of ethinyl estradiol. In 1981 50 % of Dutch pill users took a sub-50 (Figure 2). The same is true for the Scandi navian countries. In our own University Clinic 95 % of pill-users take a sub-50 pill; only 5 % use a 50 JAg pill on medical indication. This decrease in estrogen dosage, which is usually accompanied by a decrease of progestational component as well, has resulted in a decrease of thromboembolic disease. Factors that are still important to consider are diabetes mellitus, hypertension, adipositas and smoking. Good selection of patients together with the prescribing where possible of sub-50 pills may result in the numbers of compli cations and side-effects being close to those encountered in the control group.…

Some of the species studied here represent basic biological ex perimental subjects-in some cases, marine versions of the white rat and pigeon-that are being used for a wide range of studies. Other species studied were virtually unknown as experimental animals. The authors have studied their animals in considerable depth, often in both the field and the laboratory. It is this cross reference between real life and the artificial but controlled conditions of the laboratory which gives us the necessary understanding, and ultimately the means, for improving our rapidly deteriorating environment, a must for man's survival, maintenance, and improvement of the quality of living standards. A direct outgrowth of a AAAS symposium entitled 'Recent Advances in the Behavior of Marine Organisms' held in December 1966, these vol umes include a reasonable balance between review and original unpublished research. Of the many persons who have made these volumes possible, we wish to especially thank Nancy Fish, Lois Winn, Mabel Trafford, and Deborah Brennan. The latter two accomplished most of the final editorial work. The personnel of Plenum Press were cooperative in all aspects of our rela tionship. Cardiologists who lived through the era of false hopes and frustrations of previous' operations' for coronary artery disease can fully appreciate what this major advance offers to their patients. The number of papers on this topic presented at national meetings attest to its popularity, but also make it increasingly difficult for anyone to assimilate all the data. Practitioners who must consider coronary artery bypass surgery for their patients may thus have difficulty in coming to some rational decision regarding the indications for the operation and its consequences. Depending on the 'authority' that one reads, there is still some controversy as to which patients are candidates for coronary artery surgery. This monograph on the prac tice of coronary artery bypass surgery, therefore, comes as a welcome boon to cardiologists, surgeons, internists, and general practitioners who must consider referring their patients for such surgery. It presents a balanced and reasonable picture of the overall subject, in addition to containing important information on such topics as opera tive technique and economic impact. Dr. Miller has done an outstand ing job in bringing together in one text the important considerations related to the evaluation of patients, the natural history of coronary artery disease and the benefits and problems associated with bypass surgery.…

These matters are of genuine concern to increasing numbers of governmental agencies and legislative bodies around the world, for some of these chemicals have resulted in a few mishaps from improper use. It brought outstanding investigators in four fundamental areas of behavioral neurobiology into juxtaposition, there to provide an integrated, multidisciplinary perspective on behaviorally significant brain mechanisms. Particular emphasis was placed on topics of interest to neurobiologists as well as to clinicians in neurological and psychiatric disciplines. The session on central activity states was selected as an appropriate point of departure because the continuum of brain activity states extending from the natural depression of hibernation through the heightened levels of arousal accom panying learning is such a clear and basic determinant of behavioral output. The papers on learning and memory outlined diverse approaches to un derstanding the basis of these interrelat~d CNS capabilities that constitute the neural basis of behavioral adaptation. Finally, the topics of affective states and mechanisms of pain provided a focus of clinically relevant discus sion covering multiple levels of functional and anatomical CNS organiza tion.
